Hello fellow Tenno.

This will be a topic for random art stuff I will do, which may or may not include concepts. I won't be updating very regularly, but hope you will still enjoy them.

Twin Pigtails Alt Helm For Nova

Idea gotten from this topic by -..- :

https://forums.warframe.com/index.php?/topic/108069-twin-pigtail-alt-helm-for-nova-pls/

Dj1FFYT.jpg

yaURttZ.jpg?1

Not completely serious about the idea, just curious. I wanted to sketch out something I had in mind looking at Nova's real Season 2 alt helm, as well as Nightmare from SC4.

Nightmare

k7SvT3t.jpg

Thoughts

- Some people consider Nova quite "cute" in a way, hence the topic above in the first place. I also happen to have a friend who uses a white and pink Nova with pink energy, so it's fluffs and bubblegums every time things explode (similar to a certain depiction in Yuikami's comics). So personally, I wouldn't mind this idea of an alt helm lol.

- The reason behind this is to create something based on the above idea, while making it somewhat fitting with Warframe's designs and her own. Whether I achieved that or not, it doesn't matter too much to me.

- The antimatter stuff that comes out of the protrusions will use similar physics to dangly parts/syandana. The fact that they will be much shorter than the latter will reduces chances of tripping and self-choking physics.

- Having two holes for antimatter thingies to come out may be redundant with the overall design, since Nova already has two of those things on her back, which is why, on a serious level, I'm skeptical about the design. The length and "physics" of the antimatter mcjiggs may change that visual aspect though.

i was totally against the suggestion. this, looks far better. it matches the theme of Warframe. the suggestion using those.... sorry. i can't refer to those 'cartoons' in any way that isn't offensive. i have zero respect for them.

what i'm seeing here, is those two ports are 'vents', rather than Antimatter storage.

your sketch honestly, gives Nova a much more mature, sophisticated, serious face. i like it.

(though, i admit, the Dolphin nose on the base helmet is hilarious).

i might be able to see myself using this helmet.

unfortunately, the Season 2 helmet for Nova looks like a short ponytail and chipmunk cheeks full of water. :/

"Vents" seems to be a better wording for it, since that's pretty much what they all look like. Even the... I quote from you, the "short ponytail and chipmunk cheeks full of water," that is the official season 2 helm, has that long blowhole (pun not intended with your comment of dolphin nose) on top of the head, which is probably where the antimatter "flame" will come out in that helm.

As opposed to Default and Season 2 helm, where the mouth area is rounded, I liked the Season 1 helm's "lifted up" face, though that one was at the extreme and almost looked skeletal. I just went with a ninja-like mask... with a dolphin nose.

Now I even see a whale's derp face in the "back view" picture.

Awesome! I would have the plasma-like things more lateral, like this http://caseymarks.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/sissy-pigtails.jpg

and possibly with bow-like structures at the base of the pigtail like the light green things here http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lnW1PLF-bUI/UONaVeE5bWI/AAAAAAAAZZw/1T4hbtIP660/s640/sweet+lily+pigtails+001.JPG

The way you made it now (in the image) seems more like daemon horns, which is admittedly another avenue that would look nice on a Nova.

But enough fun. Now go back in the cage, fixing bugs.

Ah no, nevermind. You aren't a dev. :P

If it goes lateral with the design I made, I think the protrusions would have looked very awkward in placement, and the head would look too "wide" in a way (Frost pulls it well because of his body shape, same goes for Loki). I think going a bit oblique angle would suit the flow better not only with the helm, but Nova's overall "petite" design, without going towards the exact same direction as those two vents on her back.

Maybe tilted slightly could allow something similar to the lateral pigtail look, as long as it doesn't come too much in conflict with the "V" look of her head. That "sharper" look is what I would prefer as opposed to going full "cute" I guess. To be honest I didn't think of demon horns because of where the protrusion starts.

As for the bow-like structure, it could be dangly parts I guess.I would go more with something like Pendragon helm than Swindle/Pulse though, so that it won't conflict too much with the antimatter "pigtails."

Thanks for the feedback~

Looks much better in the full-body sketch. Are the plasma things bigger and a bit more plastic or is it only me?

YYou could follow the style of the ring scaffolds she has in the two vents on her back.

Omigad yes!! Here!! Have all my support!

Pigtail FTW! Specially on Nova! XD

Haha, indeed, especially on that Nova in your comics, whoever it is (since she might be one of your friends/clan mates, if not completely fictional).

Yeah the ones coming out from her head will have physics and be slightly dangly, while being longer as well.. I don't think having them straight like the current ones and the ones on her back will give the pigtail effects, nor would it be as interesting IMO.

As for the "rings," that's a good point. I don't think I'll add them to the sketch since it will just clutter the messy lines I did, but I believe we can sort of imagine it.

They are not vents. I think they are penning traps. Anitmatter cannot be stored via conventionally means because if it comes into contact with matter... well.. boom. The current real world way of storing them is to "suspend" them in a compound field called Penning Trap (http://en.wikipedia.org)/wiki/Penning_trap). Think if you look carefully at Nova's "vents" and her "bun" there is a dot of what could be antimatter suspended there.

So while I like the idea of pigtails, Nova's old "bun" has function. the current pigtails doesn't.

That's actually quite insightful and interesting. Thanks for sharing. I guess we'll just assume that with Tenno/Orokin technology it suspends a field of antimatter to make those "pigtails", whatever the reason other than cosmetics XD After all, most helmets appear not to have actual, particular functions (don't even tell me you can play strings on Chorus Banshee's helm!).

By the way, wouldn't it require an "enclosed field" to be a penning trap, as shown in one of the diagrams in the link you posted? In that sense, what Nova has can't really be an effective penning trap anyway. I'll just keep saying "vents" since it's simple and people will know what I'm talking about.

The field is the one that matters, not the physical cage. in layman's terms, one field holds the particle at a fixed height. Another prevents it from moving horizontally. And with magic stuff like Mag... well.. anything is possible in "Tenno magic" (though it leaves a bad taste for the more demanding sci-fi audience)

btw, just to clarify: I am just commenting on the "vent" part. Not really "objecting" to any designs. Although the original design has "function", I question the sanity of anybody who suspends a dangerous antimatter particle ABOVE THE HEAD. iow: the original design isn't that great on function and rationality as well. So don't let me limit the creativity.

Oh I see. I thought there will need some kind of physical cage to create that field in the first place, but since it seems to deal with some form of magnetism from what I read, I guess it can be stretched further, along with the Tenno magic as you put it.

And thanks for the clarification, even though I didn't take it that way, so no worries haha.

Fan Art Login Diorama Submission

For those who may have missed it, I was one of the winners for the Fan Art Login Diorama contest. Unfortunately it seems that the idea itself has been abandoned, so I guess it will never appear in-game.

I might as well include my submission here, along with the explanation since it's not on the winner's page (for good reasons, since it would clutter the post).

The diorama's idea was that the camera would rotate and move quite a long path before going static at the end.

Tenno

fubDRjA.jpg

- Arrow pointing is where your Warframe will be. The weapons they hold will be DE's choice, but I chose a few lesser-used Tenno weapons for the most part.

- The rest of the squad will be made of random selected clan mates (rotations). If you don't have a clan, it will select among your friend list. If you don't have friends (or you're missing a few members), they (or the missing spots) will be replaced by default Warframes (also on rotation).

- Faint smoke particle effects coming from the ground.

Click the tab to see the rest of the diorama

Grineer and Corpus

1AQHbTJ.jpg

- Camera rotates toward your Tenno's shoulder, showing Vor, Kril and a small squad of Grineer on the left side, with Corpus (preferably Alad V. in the front), crewmen and MOAs on the right.

- Smoke is faint, but dense behind the foreground characters, so that Grineer eyes and Corpus visors are glowing ominously through the smoke.

Infestation

Ayx4rKa.jpg

- Camera pans lower in the space between Vor and Alad V.

- Dense smoke clears out, Grineer and Corpus squad disappear (to avoid performance issues)

- Infestation blobs on the ground appears, quickly revealing infested units (all types).

- The camera slowly goes through the infested army as the fog behind them becomes clearer, in order to reveal...

Lephantis

XohblP0.jpg

- Camera moves up and zooms out slightly, showing Lephantis's impressive scale

- Half/all infestation units at its feet will be gone, same reason as above.

- Orokin void portal behind the beast, suggesting its connection to its creators

- Camera slowly zooms in the Infested Grineer head...

What Stalker?

HijoG6R.jpg

- The screen flickers, the signature warning of the Stalker

- After the first flickers, the Stalker appears on top of Lephantis, holding Hate, back facing the viewer. Typical dark & edgy.

- He will appear only for a second, during the screen flickering, before disappearing completely for the rest of the diorama.

- He will also appear more contrasted with the void portal to simply look like a silhouette

Warframe

XoREcvl.jpg

- Camera zooms out to reveal all the important characters, including the Tennos' whole squad in the front.

- Diorama will stay fixed in this camera angle until you log in, with some slight camera movements/wobbling

So that was my idea. I would like to thank again to DE for the initial selection, and for the Design Council to have voted on it. I'm very humbled by it, and will only be more so after seeing it come to life.

P. S.: I had also requested to bring the Tenno drums theme song for this diorama instead of the mission lobby diorama songs. Not sure it will be taken into consideration, but didn't hurt to try.

Technically speaking, Penning traps aren't a horribly efficient way of storing antimatter, because you need tremendous electric forces to counteract the repulsion between particles of the same electric polarity, and this scales pretty bad. Also a vacuum, or air reacts with antimatter.

It is also a big no-no in the look department... because it's an airtight box. Even if you look inside there is no glow. Why? Because the only way for the internals to glow would be that the antimatter is colliding with stuff, and none wants that (mostly because of costs, not like blowing up anything, too weak to store enough AM for that).

A relatively realistic system I've seen thrown around http://www.centauri-dreams.org/?p=17111 is that of making antihydrogen, keep it damn cool, and contain it with STRONG magnetic fields. This way they don't have to deal with the particles doing their best to separate from each other, just with the fact that a neutral particle's magnetic momentum (how much you can keep it where you want with magnetic fields) is kinda weak.

Still hard and expensive, but scales pretty well.

STRONG magnetic fields need equally STRONG cooling, especially at the sizes of a Warframe, where even room-temperature superconductors will struggle. I'm more for the stuff on Nova being heat vents dumping heat and vapor from very hot above-room-temp superconductors. A bit like a Nuke Plant's big cooling towers.

In general in sci-fi, "heat exhaust port" can be used to cover the most weird things that glow or do similar effects without being so much wrong. As more or less anything is blatantly violating thermodynamics anyway (generates far too much heat than what is realistically able to dump in its environment).

I do wish to point out again: I am mainly commenting that the thingies on nova are not vents. They don't vent anything. Unless it is her desire for kabooms?

And I believe they are some tenno-tech antimatter cages. you can even see the anti-matter particle if you stare. The real-world counterpart I first thought of is the Penning Trap, which is why I mentioned it. I have no will nor desire to fight a crusade demanding that all people agree that those things are penning traps :)

And maybe I am not that well updated on real world science, so my knowledge stopped at the existence of penning trap (I had to read wiki to know in detail how it works). But does the whatever alternate method you mention match Nova's case?

And wrt to realistic scale... we live in a world of Tenno magic. Too many things don't have a solid believable foundation that we just attribute it to "tenno magic".  Personally, I don;t like it, but I stopped questioning such stuff to keep things enjoyable :P

Heat vents usually vent hot air that is sucked in by other areas, to cool stuff down. All heat vents work like that.

You can even place ionocraft-like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ionocraft circuits in the rings that Nova has in those thingies to get a powerful bladeless fan. (these things are more commonly called "lifters")

No, nothing will. It's plain dumb to have weapon-grade amounts of antimatter (or the containment machinery) in plain sight, even if you have the tech to do so.
What I said is just the method that will take over the Penning Traps in the near future.

FYI, it's you that pulled out Penning Traps. I was content of discussing purely aesthetic matters.

  • 2 weeks later...

A little sketch of Trinity (my main Warframe). Meridian helm is definitely my personal favorite.

I'm thinking of doing a bigger project with this, but it will be with traditional media. I'll see when I have the time.
