Game Freezes Computer

Game freezes whole computer, after a few seconds sound stops as-well, have to force restart the computer with the power button. No amount of waiting will result in the computer un-freezing, Ctrl+Alt+Delete does not work, Alt+Tab does not work, Windows key, of course, does not work.

Almost always happens in the voids, but given that they are the best place to get void parts for the cursed trader, I find myself only running void missions lately.. that is when the game does not freeze. Running Survival missions as you would expect.... Lost quite a few keys this way, as the game thinks "Oh, your just trying to reset the run" least, it appears that way as my keys have been dropping like rocks, yet the amount of prime components I have are still painfully low. Usually it freezes around the 4-minute to 10 minute mark. Running the game at all max settings, except with Anti-Aliasing off, and at 4k resolution. (Crash still occurs at 1080p in windows mode, so no dice there apparently), and I leave V-Sync off, as of course, this a FPS killer on any machine. I run the game in borderless Windowed mode, and have had this crash with background programs running, and without any of them running.

Drivers are up to date, I have checked just about every site under the sun to insure my drivers are up to date for my graphics card, and motherboard (Bios). A few times the game has actually crashed instead of freezing the entire system, those times I would get a "NVIDIA Kernel has stopped working error" at the bottom right of my screen. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B8J5y7XCQAAAt7U.jpg:large

When this happens I usually also get a chance to report the crash through an on screen prompt that shows up after it has crashed, and I always do so, as of yet, it appears in vein as this has been going on for months now (Figured with the error reports you guys would of been aware of this, and fixed it by now.)

Sometimes if I am lucky, upon restarting my computer from a full system freeze, it will say the computer has recovered from a blue screen, and I have this message: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B8UbHbxCQAAHC79.jpg:large

I have spoken to Windows Support about issues, they have fixed the very few things they could find wrong with my system, I have RMAed my graphics card, monitored my power levels in the bios for my graphics card to insure its stable, done disc cleanups, re-installed my OS, spoken with Intel support and run diagnostics, and done multiple different memory tests to insure my memory is stable. Any test I have run has found no issue with my system.

I have checked CPU & GPU temps, and usage, and the GPU of course with V-Sync off spikes to max usage, but I have used Asus X16 to change it's fan profile to keep it cool (below 80*), and CPU temps and usage never seem to be that high.

I have no other games that crash as such as yours, and after doing so bloody much trouble shooting, and fixing any issues I had found in the past (That were related to a PS4 controller plugged in, that is no longer plugged in. This seems random, but if you search my twitter feed you will see me asking about other issues, just want to make sure I cover everything here. Computer was failing to start 7/10 times, unplugged that controller, system works again.), I'm 99% sure the fault is on your game now.

Please tell me you guys/gals are aware of this issue, and a fix is near, or that you have one that I could apply, this is driving me mad, and after spending far too much money on this game, it's insane to suddenly not be able to play it for any real period of time on my newest rig.

your GPU might be unstable
edit: try lowering your temp target (to around 70°C) in GPU Boost 2.0
edit2: DO NOT use third party software to adjust you gpu fans speed, nvidia driver manges it on it's own using GPU Boost 2.0
edit3: use furmark to check if your graphics card is stable, warframe isnt that graphic demanding game
gpu drivers crash when your gpu becomes unstable (usually memory (vram), sometimes gpu)

Please, send your "EE.log" from immediately after the incident to: http://support.warframe.com

Make sure to also reference this thread in your support ticket.

EE.logs can be found in /%localappdata%/Warframe on your PC

(Please note: the EE.log will not help us restore lost items, but it will help us identify issues with Warframe.)

hey there, I had the same problem as you. Does your screen turn off too? Launch Warframe Patcher, top right, settings bottom open that up. Turn off Directx 11, 10, and 64 bit (make sure they're all un-checked).. After I did that , no problems what so ever.. Good luck hope this helps.

Yea , but his computer it's pretty strong don't know if you did'nt saw but 16 GB ram & and GTX 980... and that I7 should not have any single problem to handle Warframe , maybe it's the part with the "superclocked" I heard warframe don't like much overclock

I have virtually the exact same rig but with WINDOWS 8.1

Warframe didn't like my memory running at 3000Mhz in the void especially. I thought it was my CPU overclock. But no it was the memory for me.

I am running that same Mobo and processor. I have the processor set at 100x45 for 4500MHz OC.

My memory is Gskill memory 16GB of Gskill ripclaw 3000Mhz... I have to run at factory default at 2133Mhz. I plan to tweak timings and CPU voltage, as I think that might have something to do with it. But 4500MHZ with mem at 2133Mhz. Warframe, BFHardline Beta, BF4, Dying Light, Star Citizen Arena Commander all run without a single hitch now.

Have overclocked, under clocked, and set to default my memory, there are no drivers to role back to that used to work, as Warframe has never functioned correctly on this rig. As setting the 980 to factory defaults, I haven't overclocked it myself, it came as is, so it's defaults are what they should be, and I have replaced it once for fear that the issue was to do with it.

Someone also mentioned setting my GPU to stay cooler, I had it already set to 80*, but I lowered it to 78/76 can't remember right now, as if you look below, well... can't access the computer at the time of typing. I believe I have also under-clocked it in the past, and I did at one point for a few minutes poke about with giving it more power, fearful it was starving, but issue still happened, and quickly set the GPU back to using it's normal power consumption. (This was before I RMAed what I thought was a faulty GPU, who knows, maybe the whole product line is borked in some way. At least when it comes to Warframe.)

GPU Boost 2.0 was mentioned as a way to set the temps for my Graphics card, I used X16 because that is what is suggested by Nvidia for my card, as GPU Boost 2.0 is actually a function apparently built into it.

PS: Just got the issue again, as before, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Alt+F4, Alt+Tab, and the good old windows key, do nothing, but this time even though the game froze, I can still hear the YT video I had running in the background- and it just suddenly stopped after 5 minutes, so, nvm, everything is indeed now frozen as before, and as before, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Alt+F4, Alt+Tab, and the good old windows key, do nothing.. I should note that I have had this issue running the game at 1080p, & 4k, and with/without apps like YT opened in the background. Sending the log file to tech support now.

GOOD NEWS! Just happened on my other computer too! >.> This is a multi-monitor setup, and luckily this appeared to be slightly different this time. Game froze, computer sound persisted, Alt+Tab still works though, so I'm actually able to type this out while Warframe is still frozen.

This time I was in a syndicate spy mission, for Arbiters of Hexis, not sure what planet, was a corpus ice planet tile set though, fighting corpus. Playing on my second account, using a Loki Prime, Glaxion main weapon, but I was doing a melee attack when the game froze. Will add the EE.log file from this computer to my already existing report. They are linked to this page, so hopefully they will be able to pop over here & see this as-well. This computer in the past has not had issues such as this, but I have not played Warframe on this computer for an extended period of time in quite a while, as I preferred to play on my 4k rig. Not sure if this issue is related, but is nice that it only froze the game, and not the entire computer here though. I was playing with settings on high, and at 1080p. but with V-Sync off.

Just clicked on the Warframe window again, gave me the "Not responding" prompt, told it to close, the "report crash" window did not pop up, so no error codes or anything from that to send. Here I was, thinking I could just relax & use my old stable rig to get some rep for some factions today, and relax... no... no such luck -,-

Just a heads up, tech support e-mailed me back, wanted me to disable all background programs/ startup programs through msconfig- after doing so, I ran the game launcher that I found in steam/steamapps/common/warframe/tools - which had me select a location & install a 5 gig "patch". I selected the same steamapps/common/warframe folder, it downloaded the hefty "patch" & I then ran the game from there. I did this round about way to avoid starting up Steam, to rule that out as it's usually one of those startup programs.

After playing the game for at least 40 minutes or more, without any issues, I opened up a random YouTube video in the background to see if that would cause a problem, and sure enough, the game crashed. I have reported this to tech support, and sent in the EE file. I did get another crash after sending them the message using gmail in google chrome, closing out chrome and then playing the game for 10~ minutes. Send them the EE file for that crash as-well. Hopefully they will figure out a fix, it's pretty dang annoying not being able to run anything in the background.

Bump >.>

Had a new crash today, twice. Game caused screen to go black, followed by returning to desktop, but as before, if I clicked the desktop, it was like I was still in game, but could only see, said desktop. After a number of minutes, sometimes less than 2, the game crashed. (Happened shortly after my friend captured the first Capture target in a T4 void mission.) Sending EE file to support now. Had nothing open in the background, besides Steam, and a few default background systems, such as Adobe CC, and Autodesk Licensing, the bluetooth thing that windows always starts, and Razer's synapse nonsense.

This same bug is happening to me since I upgraded to a GTX 980. My previous GTX 560 did not have this issue.

-Game will immediately go to a black screen with no indication of hitching or stuttering. The nVidia "Display Driver stopped Responding" message appears.

-I can click back on the Warframe window from the Taskbar but the game will never maximize. I can still hear mission sounds. I actually had this happen while we did a vault run with 3 caches and just about to extract. Stayed in the mission until friends told me they were back in their liset before I killed the Warframe process. I received all the rewards so it's not actually kicking me from the mission.

-Windows logs crash event (I don't have event ID handy) as reported by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2665946 I've tried adjusting the registry values per the KB article but it still happens. As I said, there is no indication that the display driver actually stops working (hitching/fps drop or anything else noticeable)

I've pretty much gone through all my tech support repertoire to narrow down the issue but I'm out of options now. I don't think it's a defective card because crashing only happens in Warframe.

Happening to me on Windows 7x64 Enterprise.

I can send my EE.log / dxdiag as well next time the issue happens if you like.

*edit: trying to fix kb link but it seems to be adding a . at the end.

just tried to play on my laptop

same problem here. but in my issue.

the game freezes my laptop after (x)minutes. even if you just stay in your ship and not do any mission it freezes up in a while.

I can still move my mouse around though. I can see the cursor cause i play waframe in window mode.

Can't alt+tab, ctr+alt+delete either. I also need to force shut down my laptop to be able to use it again.

all settings in low. still didn't made any difference.

I am able to play dota2 though. With the resolution set to 1366 x 768, 75% render quality, texture and shadow quality set to high..

my laptop specs:

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6470M

CPU: Intel® Core i3 CPU M380 @ 2.53GHz 2.53GHz

RAM: 8192MB

OS: window 7. 64bit

I'm not familiar with hardware so.

if the problem is my laptop specs doesn't meet the minimum requirements to run warframe please do tell :)

I think I fixed the specific problem where the screen would minimize to desktop, you could still hear game sound, but you could not maximize the screen again.

I noticed this happened 100% of the time for me in the Lech Kril fight. The one thing I didn't change in-game was going from Borderless Fullscreen to normal Fullscreen. After changing to Fullscreen, instead of crashing the screen would minimize and you would get that standard "Windows Has Detected Slow Performance, would you like to disable Windows Aero?" I told that message to bugger off and don't ask again. After doing that I've been free of the bug.

To fix it without getting the crash (Windows 7):

Control Panel -> Action Center -> Change Action Center Settings -> Uncheck "Windows Troubleshooting" under Maintenance messages -> Hit OK

Just got this crash again, thought I had fixed it after deleting & re-installing my PhysX drivers, worked for a week... Then today, few minutes in a T2 Survival and it goes kaput, trying your fix by changing the settings, hope that fixes it. (Even if it doesn't thanks for trying to help.)

Also have PhysX turned off, didn't fix that.

Didn't fix it, still borked, PhysX still off, game still put me on the bloody desktop with Windows Troubleshooting turned off, and PhysX turned off. Going to contact the devs once my friend evacs from the mission I can hear is still going on in the background. We were in T2 Survival. Crashed before I even killed 3 enemies. Did give me the kernel error at the bottom right as before.

FUNK!, Alt+F4ed it to get it to close because even though it was visually not responding, I could still hear sound, and out of habit hit said key combo just to get it to close, hoping it would crash.

Since yesterday i'm having literally the exact same Problems. (just without Bluescreens) on a MSI 970

Started on Neptune Sao (3 times) and Random Orokin Voids. (one Time atm)

Driver is pretty old 344.16, but that doesn't seem to be the problem...

Old thread, new posts!

I'm also experiencing ths issue. I've tried everything listed within this thread and more... nothing helps. My support ticket hasn't been responded to after 5 days. Hoping to get some type of response soon.

I'm having a similar issue. I'll be running a mission and all of a sudden my screen just freezes completely, but I can still hear the sound from the game and I can still move around and shoot/use abilities. Alt+tab still works. Pc isn't frozen, just the game freezes. I upgraded to a 970ssc from a 650ti boost. This never happened to me with my old card and it doesn't do it on any other game except this one.

Been having a number of similar problems as described in this thread. About once every 3-4 days I'll have an episode of the display freezing on both of my monitors; happened several times on mod inventory screens and once during an Orokin Derelict. The first time it happened I managed to fumble my way to closing the game and it seems to have frozen the game also; hadn't thought to Alt+F4, which I'll try if it happens again.

Then earlier tonight about halfway through a T3E it completely froze for about a minute before blue screening. Windbg seemed to implicate an Nvidia driver--which seems to be a common theme in this thread.
