Question

LoreBanner.png

So I see that we have so much talk about lore and how we want more if it, but nowhere storing our existing knowledge on the Warframe universe. How can we know more about the game if we don't collect and store the data?

Well, we can start by posting here. Any data you come across in-game whether it be from Lotus, enemies, or the environment themselves that confirms any kind of lore, put it here. Whatever faction you find information on should be put here. Preferably, list who or what gave you the information (ie Lotus or the name of a boss).

---

Faction Lore:

Tenno Lore:

Tenno descend from an ancient civilization that lived on earth in the Orokin era, known as great warriors that utilized warframe technology. They are the last remnants of their race, awakened from cryosleep for an unknown purpose. - Official Site

Due to the effects of extended cryosleep, the awakened Tenno are suffering from a form of amnesia. - Lotus

Many Tenno are still inside of their cryopods, either captured by the enemy or out of the Lotus's reach. Other Tenno must come to their aid before they can be released. - Warframe

The current force of Tenno are survivors of a past conflict. - Official Site

Tenno are so far the only faction known to understand and use warframe technology. - Official Site

Tenno are often referred to as one in the same with their warframes, which shows how important the exo-armors are in Tenno society. - Lotus

They are well known warriors: masters of the gun, blade, and exo-armor. These form the integral parts of the Tenno fighting system. - Official Site, Tutorial

In the past, Tenno were well known for their discipline and adhering to a code of honor. Chivalry was a cornerstone of society. - Official Site

Tenno have the potential to be mercenaries rather than warriors, exploiting their warframes to gain wealth. - Official Site

There are no friendly races that support the Tenno, they only have each other. - Official site

Tenno must scavenge for all their equipment and have access to Orokin foundries that can be used to build useful items. These are often improvised creations built around the salvage Tenno collect on their missions. - Warframe

Tenno operate in small groups called cells, generally made of four warframes. - Lotus

The vast majority of the remaining Tenno can be found around Mercury, where the last remaining Orokin Tower relics remain almost untouched by time. Grineer patrols remain active there in order to prevent organized Tenno resistance. - Planet descriptions

Orokin Towers are used by the Tenno as a base of operations and areas in which to train. The White Tower, for example, is where Tenno complete skill tests in order to advance their rank in society. - Warframe, DESteve

Tenno are a society based around merit and ascend through a series of ranks by proving their skills. - Warframe

Tenno have organized themselves into clans, liken to their Orokin ancestors. - Warframe

Tenno use small snub fighters to infiltrate enemy ships; they can fit one to four warframes inside. - Warframe

There is a dark presence hunting down Tenno whom have brought death to our enemies. It has a mis-guided sense of justice and sympathizes with those who seek to destroy our society. It's powers are those of our own and the armor it wears is cloaked in shadow - it must be destroyed. - Warframe

Tenno have, in the past, been forced to cleanse their allies afflicted by infestation. For this task, they employ sharp weaponry such as the Ether swords.

The Grineer Empire is at the height of its power. - Official Site

The Grineer navy is the primary force encountered by the Tenno, and their ships are defended by Grineer marines. Marines are organized into platoons with varying numbers, generally including 4 to 6 grineer. - Warframe, Lotus

Grineer soldiers have different specializations that make each platoon's composition unique. These can range from lightly armored skirmishers to genetically modified heavy troopers. The forces deployed are selected depending on the threat level Grineer commanders deem the enemy to be. - Warframe

LexiconBanner.png

Tenno Language:

Grineer Language:

GrineerAlphabet.png
The Grineer use an alphabet based around rectangular figures of varying sizes, each with certain "notches" on the left side to further differentiate them. These characters are often found painted haphazardly on the walls of Grineer asteroid bases and equipment.

GrineerLogo.png

This symbol appears everywhere in Grineer writing, generally preceding the words or phrases. It appears to have something similar to a Grineer character being enveloped by a larger, angled shape. Its significance is unknown, though it is most likely the Grineer 'Logo' or political symbol; its common occurrence within Grineer military bases shows that they are very patriotic or authoritarian in displaying the symbol for obedience and loyalty.

Corpus Language:

CorpusAlphabet.png
The Corpus language resembles the ancient earth "roman numerals" number system, as well as ancient Greek symbols. Bronze plaques adorn the hallways and are atop doors throughout Corpus ships, and they are used as the primary platform in order to display the written language.

I don't want to ruin anybody's lore fun...But DE_Steve hinted at "Animalistic" frames will happen some time. Don't get TOO into it...He did also say Rebecca asks for Cat Frame pretty much every day. <3

Long live Cat Frame.

Then we'll need a https://forums.warframe.com/index.php?/topic/38273-i-am-vespa-scooter-references-get-old-fast-mind-you/#entry360569'>wasp frame.

... Read the topic title... noticed "no cats."

The internet will not be pleased with this forecast.

... yeah, there was something else i was going to ponder here but since i'm not sure how to use a spoiler tag i think i'll keep that to myself ;)

though... I hate to be "that guy" for wondering about this but...

The other are a warring people known as the Grineer. Through military conquest, they now control most of the system. Only male, they reproduce through cloning with eatch new generation weaker than the last.

Only male... Only... male...

yeah, i'm sure that since they're genetically altered so much that that particular impulse has been completely removed from them... but if they are descended from human(oid) stock that is primarily biological in nature, then that does beg the question. (... if ya know what i mean)

MrGrae, on 04 Apr 2013 - 11:40 PM, said:

The devs have already explained that Dark Sector and Warframe share the same roots, the original Dar kSector feeling much more like an MMO open world version of Warframe, which is what our would-be Grineer is from a concept trailer of. However, producers got their mitts on the concept and said no, thereby changing it into the Dark Sector that was released.

This is all covered here http://www.giantbomb...ound/1100-4555/

The two are NOT however related in the lore as the devs have said many times here on the forums.

I just read through this entire thread and wanted to say thank you for that link and the thread! This game has quite literally latched onto the sci-fi part of my brain and just completely leave me in awe.

A few things I want to confirm are:

It has already been stated by the Devs that Dark Sector and this game are not the same. In this statement are they referring to the published version of DS or are the referring to what they had originally thought up? Not sure if anyone knows this answer.

Does anyone know why each Warframe does not have a Male/Female alternative to it? Not sure if this has been discussed

Lastly, anyone know the significance of the "Lotus" basis? What is the relationship with the symbolism of the Lotus (flower I presume) to the Tenno or is there any?

Awesome stuff!

Killing Chancellor Whatshisface is supposed to earn you favor with some political organization. The "Council?"

What damn council? The Grineer Council? This is the only indication that the Tenno have any kind of exchange with other factions aside from the exchange of bullets. I've been under the impression that the Tenno don't really have lives outside of constant battle. There is no way the Warframes are capable of sexual pleasure, philosophical discourse, or artistic expression, and I don't see any reason to believe that they have "civilian" bodies to inhabit in their spare time.

There are other indicators of Tenno interaction with other factions, maybe even civilian and political. This indicator? Assasination contracts, that obviously is being done by the Tenno force to gather either credits of favor from SOMEONE. Also, yeah, now with the Dojos, it WOULD be assumed that the Warframe have a life besides combat, albeit a bit awkward...

Considering you start running into Grineer marines explicitly described as female rather early on already... also I think the Heavy Gunners are from the same mold, just with heavier cybernetics and arms. Ofc one then has to wonder why the Grineer state actually bothers with them since, all other things being equal, men have physiques better suited for the soldierly profession as-is and if nothing else this setup requires basically doubling the "logistical infrastructure" used to produce their troops for little perceptible gain...

Anyways, I'm hazarding a guess you're referring to what is teknik'ly known as "sex drive" here.

Eh.

Just remove the 'nads from the clone troopers - via genetic engineering or more simply surgically - and so much for that. I'd be surprised if the Grineer haven't done exactly this, given that they rely on cloning to sustain their military manpower base anyway. More speculatively it wouldn't be odd if they used cloning to ensure they have a sufficient labour force available too, but that's probably not nearly as necessary given that the clone army basically frees the civvie population up for more productive pursuits.

Plus there has to be someone for the Grineer to be conquering stuff *from* - and it presumably isn't the Corpus, as the two factions appear to maintain some kind of uneasy peace between them. On similar vein the Corpus presumably needs somebody to trade *with*...

Plus I'm guessing *somebody* operates the support infrastructure the Tenno cells rely on, too.

Most logical explanation would be a hodgepodge of disparate and presumably not terribly united minor polities across the system, minor "successor states" to whatever civilisation (presumably the Orokin) once ran the show not unlike the Grineer and Corpus but on a smaller scale.

As far as the Tenno go, please note that the Warframes are explicitly described as "exo-armor", ie. something you don and doff. Now the person inside probably has any number of weird implants and whatnots to properly interface with the suit and its systems (some of which do things little short of magic), but that's a far cry from being "hardwired" into the things like you two seem to assume for some odd reason.

That said given that the Tenno of the game's "present era" basically boil down to a handful of amnesiac supersoldiers woken up from way too long cryosleep who're more or less taking their orders (if only for lack of better options) from whatever-the-Hell-Lotus-is, having much of a "society" in any normal sense of the word is obviously a wee bit out of the question.

It also rather sounds like that as far as the rest of the solar system is concerned "Tenno" basically means "the Lotus", ie. you go through the latter if you have much any business with the former...

Am I the only one who thinks that all the factions are "spin-offs" of humans?

.__.

That would appear rather glaringly obvious, given that the Grineer are flat-out Earthlings (if now rather unsavory sort) and the Corpus are explicitly described as humans (presumably descended from the inhabitants of outer-system colonies of the earlier era). Similarly those Infested that can be recognised to have been much *anything* beyond vaguely humanoid appear to mostly consist of grotesquely mutated examples of the two, apparently fused with whatever they were wearing - some have clear traces of the characteristic rounded Grineer marine armor, others of the distinctive boxy Corpus helmet.

Which makes sense, as those two factions sound like they operate the bulk of interplanetary vessels in circulation anyway (and have some poking around the kinds of corners the Infestation apparently likes to lurk in, such as Orokin wrecks).

I would be inclined to agree. Humans became Orokin, or the creators of the Orokin civilisation (the exact denomination of the race has never strictly been specified) Orokin got majoratively wiped out, tenno from that time froze themselves, what's left of the Orokin continued to develope into the corpus and grineer based on cultural differences.

I was just wondering if it had been confirmed that Grineer and Corpus were human.  I've gone and looked at the Warframe website and saw that they describe both factions as human.  I really hope the game starts emphasizing the story soon, because honestly, I have no idea what is happening in this game.  I just go shoot things for shiny monies :P

To be fair, that's sort of in character - it's not like the Tenno know much beyond having been woken up to, basically, fight someone else's war in what is to them in all likelihood pretty much a distant post-apocalyptic future where almost everyone seems to want to variously kill, dissect and/or assimilate them.

Though you'd think they started asking Lotus (and anybody else willing to hold a conversation instead of a shootout) a lot of questions about all this crap rather soon and try to figure the rest out of all those Grin and Corpus systems they keep hacking... not to mention asking wounded and no longer combat-effective opponents a few questions at gunpoint.

There are plenty of science fiction settings that make women out to be genetically better at this or that. The Bene Gesserit, for example--they were female-only and the first male able to attain even a fraction of their power was considered to be The Chosen One. It makes no sense that being female would make you better at Bene Gessrite nude crysknife fighting, but they have some dumb excuse like better focus or something.

As for exo-armor...they're explicitly described that way? Where when? It seems I wasn't listening, and brushed that off as a way to describe a "shell" that your mind goes temporarily into.

As for why I see the Warframes that way, it's because they http://www.cthulhutech.com/media/tager-backgroundws.jpg'>look like this, but the setting http://eclipsephase.com/'>reminds me of this one, in which you can inhabit a http://direcritic.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/bennewman-zoramoller.jpg?w=530'>mostly-human body made specifically for a certain purpose.

Also, because I think http://collider.com/wp-content/uploads/ghost-in-the-shell-poster.jpg'>this setting is super cool.

Currently, Grineer and Corpus are identified as being human. Orikon, Tenno and the Sentients are of an unknown race, though most of the community (even this thread) believe the Tenno to be human. In game dialogue indicate that the Infested were created by the Orikon to fight the Sentients and it is implied that the Tenno are somehow connected to the Infested (All from the JE3 fight).

It is possible that the Orikon created the Infested to fight an alien race (Sentients) but was unsuccessful and instead created the Tenno exo armor which is a "deviation" of the Infested. Which would explain the qoute by JE3 "We are your flesh..." but I don't know for sure I'm still trying to sift through a lot of the information. It appears that there are other races, just not as prominent as the Grineer and Corpus at this time.

There's a big different between mythology and the name of some French army engineer dude.

To be fair referring to ancient greece as 'mythology' does ancient history a disservice.

While as we get further and further in time away from a culture aspects of it definitely take on the tinge of myth and it is only over long periods of time do the true stars of the era shine through to be seen.

We remember Agamemnon  we remember Achilles and Petricles, though wrapped in the cloth of myth as best we can tell these greek military dudes were in fact real people.  Vauban was a brilliant and well studied siege engineer, there is no reason at a significant enough distance into the future he one be one of many military legacies to be well remembered, once the occasionally hilarious but generally untrue stain of military ineptitude earned in the 20th century is wiped from the french legacy. I mean hell we still study the tactics Hannibal and Scipio Africanus (even the Spartans and Alexander the Great, speaking of ancient greeks.)  because military genius is remembered when it is applied well, even when coming from dead cultures.

That said, the naming of these frames (if in fact in cannon this is what the tenno named them) would definitely indicate that the tenno have at least some strong connection to human history if not having started human themselves.

My theory on this is the following:

We know the Orikin (who came first) unleashed the bio-weapon of the infested, the description of which mutates people and drives the insane with rage.  Well what if the Orikin like any human society (also making that assumption) tried to build a better soldier.  We believe the Tenno followed the Orikin what if  they were Orikin originally infected with the virus and the strict discipline and warrior culture arose out of controlling the rage and effects of the infection and perhaps even harnessing the mutational ability into weaponry and technology.

This might explain why infected materials are used to create the control systems of the warframes, many of the things the JE3 said, and why the Tenno have no interest in supporting any but their own.  Members of a dead end group of Post humans who could self destruct at any moment with a lapse of discipline, existing only to fight.  I see the Tenno as weapons without a wielder at this point. The went into cryo-sleep for some reason after the Orikin empire fell potentially because they were compelled? Maybe because there was no more war to fight?  But they awake, they are being targeted, their legacy (Orikin Technology) is being stolen, but they have the means and ability to strike out against their percieved enemies.

Right or wrong I think the Tenno are just waging a war because that is how they deal with everything and even if they weren't being persecuted they might still find a reason to fight, mainly because that would be the outlet for the rage induced by the infection, you can control and redirect it but it's gotta have an outlet.  What I don't have a theory on is the Lotus (council), but the Tenno as Posthuman weapons makes sense to me, the Lotus may simply be a preexisting means by which the Tenno couldn't be easily swayed as a group to any cause.

Just some thoughts I've been thinking.

Has anyone tried to make the connection with this and Dark Sector?

Tenno have, in the past, been forced to cleanse their allies afflicted by infestation. For this task, they employ sharp weaponry such as the Ether swords.

So I was thinking how the infected on Dark Sector, Hayden Tenno had to kill the infected and such. And how, I believe Golem says you are apart of us or something like that, he could be refering to the Technobyte Virus from Dark Sector, which not only started the infection, but also gave Hayden the Tenno abilities. Therefore it could be the connection between the Tenno and the Infected.

Also, with the Glaive, it says the very first Tenno used it. Hayden Tenno's main weapon, after being infected with the virus, was the Glaive.

I know that it could be just because Warframe was heavily based on Dark Sector, but I would still like to connect the two together somehow.

Maybe the Orikin are connected somehow?

snip for space

It's been discussed but Darksector hasn't been confirmed as part of the Warframe universe so we cannot directly connect the two until that is confirmed.  The devs have said they used concepts from it as darksector was originally supposed to be what warframe is moving towards, except for publishers preventing that from happening.

I'm guessing he was referring to the name of the planets which DO come from Mythology.

The deal with Vauban is that he is the first Frame named after an actual person in history. All the other Frames are named after mythological gods, creatures, items, and normal things.

It's true, no doubt, but we already have a weapon named after a person "Paris" who like most of the major player in the Illiad are considered to have been real persons though probably exaggerated.  Though as for the planets and heavenly bodies we are referring to those were named for greek (and roman) mythology before even our time so it makes sense to carry that forward unless you want to just rename everything, I'm not sure we can properly use that as a basis for any inference except that remnants of our era and before are still kicking around.

I know that it could be just because Warframe was heavily based on Dark Sector, but I would still like to connect the two together somehow.

Maybe the Orikin are connected somehow?

OMG you cannot imagine how many times have been posted things like this. And no, the games are not conncted.
