Selecting to upgrade a relic the moment someone makes the final relic selection can seemingly lock you into a perpetual "Please wait" while it tries to upgrade your relic. Once it's happened you're fully stuck till the mission ends without being able to do a thing beyond well closing the game. Can be seen happening here:
