Yeah, and speaking from the perspective of a paying player, the following is my opinion.

Pay-to-play (or to win) as used in the context of the discussion (referring to this generally being a "bad" thing) should have certain characteristics:

    1. lure players in under the false pretense of "free"

    2. content gating / throttling in such that the ONLY way for a player to derive a relatively good gaming experience / progression is by paying money

    3. have a game / UI design setup to prey on the obsessive and impulsive nature of human psychology as to encourage irresponsible spending and drive addiction

Warframe is none of that; as attested by many players before it is actually one of more fair free-to-play gaming models.  Players can choose to invest money or time or a combination of the two anywhere along the spectrum to get to where they want to be.

Not to say DE is without flaws.  I for one thinks the monetary purchase price for the items are set too high - as in "for the RELATIVELY LITTLE EFFORT required to get that item for free in game, they sure are charging ALOT of platinum for it in the marketplace".  So if anything, it should be us paying players making the complain, not the other way around.  But I'm not going to, as I enjoy the game too much (most paying players do too, why else would they pay?).  The price I paid for sure wasn't a bargain, but worth.

  2. I've so far spent about $1000 on the game, but I'm also at a point in my life (with job) that spending this amount on entertainment means nothing to me financially.  I do "grind" in real life to earn the money to spend on plat; the difference being grinding at office for 2-3 hours to achieve the same result as non-paying players grinding 50 to 100 hours in game.  I don't need to tell myself that I'm doing this to support the devs, because I made the decision to purchase for a more selfish reason, which is in exchange for entertainment; supporting the devs was a side-affect, not the intent.

Why does it matter anyways?  From the non-paying player's perspective, when you get paired with someone with good gears they either paid to get there or spent hundreds of hours to get there.  If you are jealous of them paying I can also flip the argument around and say that we can be jealous of that player having tons of free time (which I do not have the luxury of) to be able to grind and get to that point.  The bottom line is that if YOU want to get there you can as well, and you get both the paying and non-paying options.

The game is fun and the business model is more fair than most, I can think of much worst candidates to complain about.
