  1. I kind of liked the long duration missions that allowed you to get several prime parts in a single run. I ran void defense missions when I was bored and could get some junk prime parts to sell for ducats while doing so. I think the new system is fine, but ducat farming is now a pain.

  2. I think they are sentient to a degree, but require void energy to operate. This is why they collapse when not in contact with the operator, or when the operator is not on the transference machine. You can see in the second dream cutscene that it took a lot of effort for the warframe to break war with its leftover void energy after the operator lost contact. I think the transference machine is kind of like a wifi repeater, and extends the power and range of the operators control over the warframe.

    There's alot of misconception here.
When the Orokin discovered the Void, the Infestation wasn't a problem, and nor were the Sentients.
It was most likely an accident as in "Hey, what's this shiny glowing thing that's near Pluto?" and thus found the first Void tear or something of the sort.
Why did they send ships; towers in later? Well, that's a bit obvious, they did it in the pursuit of knowledge, power and perfection. The Void is a source of unlimited energy after all, and they had to study that energy somehow. What better way to do it than on the field? So they most likely established the Towers, self sufficient research stations; habitats and so on

Yeah I guess this explains the rooms with the energy flowing through the tubes
