This doesn't seem to fully be the case, myself and a friend were doing this challenge with public matchmaking, I'm on PC, he's on PS5. I was host, I was getting credit for all nodes regardless on wether or not I even helped kill the Necramechs. Haven't tried solo yet, but he did not get credit for any of the 40ish nodes we did.
