Mission Failure Imminent despite the mission goal being met already

I was playing Lua, Plato. As I was searching the level for the last cache, having met the extermination goal already, I was suddenly presented with a message saying "mission failure imminent: eliminate the remaining targets" and a one-minute countdown. Upon countdown reaching zero the mission failed instantly, voiding all my efforts.
