The new mining drill vs the old

If the new rare gems could only be obtained with the new drill, do the old plains drills become useless now, or do i need to stil switch to the old ones if i want to mine the plains' rare gems?

use the plains one for the plains, and the vallis one for vallis. simple as that 

iirc, the vallis one isn't expensive, from what I saw there's only 1 version(?)

Yeah, but if so, then whats the point of not being able to equip them both? It would be quite a hassle to need to change them.

and the ostron cutter series can be used in vallis just the rarer stuff need the vallis cutter

But something changed for shure (on the drop rates). Last night I spent almost an hour and get only 4 sentirium en 2 nyth, and big bunch of scrap of course.
