Chat Moderation Changes and Additions!

This post is a brief overview of changes that have come in the Volunteer Chat Moderation program and associated in-game systems.

To recap, systematic changes to Chat Moderation in Warframe went live on December 5th:

  • Moderation messages are now sent through system messages rather than private messages so that they are not overlooked.
  • Improved logging of Chat Moderator action.
  • Increased staffing for Chat Moderator management.

Here is what we’ve been up to since that day, included in the updates released with Fortuna Part 2, and the Mesa Prime Update today.

  • We have posted an official Warframe Volunteers webpage that details our volunteer teams here: https://www.warframe.com/community/volunteers. Included is the “Chat Moderator Code of Conduct” that provides a synopsis of their responsibilities, the rules that govern Chat Moderator conduct, and a breakdown of what Chat Moderators are permitted to action on in chat, along with an established way for people to report / counter-claim any manually actioned chat bans/kicks.
  • With established guidelines, we are addressing the many issues we’ve had in the past with communicating with Chat Moderators and the Community on what Chat Moderation is for Warframe. Essentially, we want everyone to be on the same page so that when issues arrive, everyone understands the outcome of manually actioned bans / kicks.
  • Chat Moderators messages will no longer appear in purple text. In the future, this will be reserved exclusively for Warframe Staff to continue communication efforts and ultimately assure that any relevant information is shared from established sources.
  • We have hired a team of professional Chat Moderators to assist with Chat Moderation in the PC English chat. They will begin moderating Wednesday, December 19th, and will do so adhering to the Chat Moderator Code of Conduct.
  • We will perform continuing reviews and training of the Chat Moderation team to make sure that everyone moderates in a consistent way. This will involve a lot more time with DE-staff leading training and feedback sessions, as well as other internal processes to help facilitate coordination within the team.

This is by no means the end of this process, but the framework has been established. As the new year comes in, we will be looking to set up a more robust set of general community guidelines and modify other volunteer programs.

Yeah sorry mate, We need the moderators be more visible. It reduces the chance of people saying stupid stuff AKA a deterrent.

If a user intentionally behaves contrary to the rules when they believe they are unsupervised and acts in accordance with the rules when they believe they are being supervised, then that user is not acting in accordance with the rules.

Users should be able and ought to behave in accordance with the rules regardless of whether there's a moderator present. We would like to be able to trust that users are responsible enough to be able to use the chat in a mature and rule abiding manner.

This game's rated M. I don't see why it even was so strictly moderated.

Content rating does not extend to social interaction within the product’s service environment. The service provider conditions and regulates the terms under which the service is used.

Watch this make chat more toxic

If you have suggestions or feedback on how you think this could be avoided, it would be greatly appreciated if you posted them. Simply saying "This is bad" or "This will make things worse" is not very helpful.

I think what he means is, which region it means. Changing region changes chat, so does it mean NA region english chat, or EU region english chat.

If I had to make an educated guess, both, but with the heavier influence on the NA chat since it tends to be harder to handle.

cool

  • whos the third party that was hired to chat mod?
  • what are the auto kick words? are those being looked at? "equinox can trap the animals with rest" was an instant ban thanks to the word trap
  • are mods/volunteers limited to set regions, or can they mod "world wide"
  • I have never seen a guide of the lotus ever.

  1. This is a non sequitur. The idea that one cannot criticize something that is not *(or may not be) working because one does not have a solution or alternative is ridiculous. It’s a fallacy because it is theoretically possible to use the criticism as motivation to think of a solution oneself, the mere fact that no solution was offered alongside the criticism doesn’t inherently invalidate the criticism itself. Point out what isn’t working and someone will figure out a solution. Fail to point it out, and things just keep going awry.
  2. My implied solution is to not implement "professional" moderators.

You said this might make chat more toxic. One of the mods asked how you thought this might be avoided and pointed to the fact saying what you did in a topic about their most recent attempt to address this isn't helpful. Why did you think this might make it more toxic?

Can't do volunteers and can't hire people. What are they supposed to do in this situation?

Are those rules public? Because nothing in the OP really mentions rules for the community. Without clear chat rules, including knowing what common words and proper nouns trigger the chat bot, people don't know what they can't say. But DE has said nothing about that. They are intentionally keeping players in the dark, and that will only maximize the number of players who get banned, fairly or unfairly, while ensuring people dont actually learn not to say those things in the first place. It's a system designed to punish as many as possible, not to actually prevent bad behavior in the first place.
