So that Stalker Mode we saw shown off a while back...

Recommended Posts

Anymore update on it? It sounded like a pvp mode that I actually might have some interest in. Mostly because you can even help the other players, just friendly fire appears to be off.

No update, as far as I know.

The response, on the forums, was extremely mixed. I mean, a substantial amount of people genuinely hated the idea.

I personally think that the devs were not expecting a response like this and are taking this time because they need to re-evaluate how they implement the thing. They always knew it was complicated, but I think they got a new insight into how complicated it would be.

They have had it pretty much built for awhile now. It's the problem of when and how to implement. They are acutely aware the pvp adverse want the opt-out. It's more about how should this system be represented. Specially story wise. They came up with Teshin training Tenno for normal pvp conclave. But how should being the stalker be represented.

If they simply go with "it's a game and you can just do this now". Would be fantastic for those who wish they could simply just play as corpus vs grineer in a ballanced less crazy mobility pvp as it sets a precedent.

They have been doing stalker gameplay in the last few tennocons. So likely more info then.

I agree that it should be an opt in system. Perhaps more rewards for the added danger.

I mean if you drop normal stalker loot... who WOULDN'T want the stalker to jump in and to try to just murder someone? It's a chance for more loot, and it's unlikely you'll actually ruin their play through of the mission.

Ooooh oooh. They could actually make stalker beacons common craftable items. Anyone using one turns it on for the mission, basically like turning human in darksouls, you turn PVP on to allow people to invade you.

Not at all. That's how.

It's a waste of time and money.

Would require time and effort to implement,  and no one really want or care about it except for those who hate it.

They could do it similiar to conclave, as in making it a syndicate with the most desirable rewards on the highest possible rank with opt-in/out available during the first syndicate rank.

It has already been developed and is even playable, so not releasing it is the actual waste of time and money.

Something could end up fully developed but then have the devs feel like its not to a standard they want and drop it, no matter how far along it is.

I personally would rather not ever see a game mode than it possibly being dead on arrival and never getting fixed or updated. We do have quite a bit of that already in warframe.

A good example of something they put a lot of work into was the kingpin system, they show cased its progress numerous times but have shelved it indefinitely. For not shaping up how they wanted.

I remember having to convince a group of people that Sonic Forces could not magically be made better by removing Classic Sonic, with them saying they could spend more time focusing on the other stuff. This was about 3/4 of the way through the marketing phase, so the game would have been at least, what, 90% complete by that point?

As far as I could tell, they were genuinely convinced that by removing Classic Sonic, Sega could recoup all the time, effort and money from developing him after the fact.

So, yes, for better or worse, I agree. I doubt such a system could cause much more harm than good considering the opt-in nature, and if it does kick off it could really expand WF's scope of play and variety of Content. Say what you will, but when the stars align and WF's PvP works, it really f***ng works. When you're up against players of a similar skill level than you, it can become true test of skill and strategy, with options for a wide number of playstyles available - sniping, close range skirmishes, even stealth. It can even improve ones own skill at the game as to thrive you must learn the intricacies of the game's movement system.

It just doesn't work whenever you place a PvP hypergod in the same room as a fresh install player, or even one of moderate skill and experience, which Conclave is woefully apt to do all the damn time. Not to mention that it offers almost no way to actually learn the skills required, even in the PvE content due to a bevy of reasons in PvE itself - mostly that advanced movement skills are genuinely unnecessary most of the time and even detrimental in some cases in PvE, which in turn means that PvP Warframe and PvE Warframe might as well be different games despite them sharing so much of the core mechanics.

Stalker mode has the potential to inject a degree of skill-based play back into the game, as well as that same genuine fear Stalker used to inspire. People make fun of how he'll just be erased by amps, but remember what amps are attatched to - slow, vulnerable Operators, which are as OP as they are in this context because Stalkers AI has him walk directly into death like every other enemy. People who've gotten used to PvP Warframe, where Arca Plasmor is quite prevalent, could run rings around Operators and strike them down without much risk, especially since we can apparently decide where to spawn, as opposed to regular Stalker who telegraphs extremely hard letting you set up firing lines a half-minute in advance.

Ooooorrrr it could flop like E.T. on the Atari.

This is kinda my prediction for the mode. I get the feeling it's gonna be adopted by a small, hardcore set of PvP players, and opted out of and roundly ignored by everyone else.

You don't need to tell me. When they asked to give our feedback in the Design Council, I wrote something like "please make absolutely sure that I'll never have to endure something like this".

And, indeed, I can't exactly say that's an unlikely future.

DE has dragged their feet so hard on adding matchmaking, a really core part of PvP to ensure the whole "players of similar skill" thing occurs that, like I said before, they might as well be different games with different communities. There's a strong possibility that Stalker mode will wind up a part of that.

The only reason I see the possibility of it uniting the two is that it does have at least some crossover, so it's a bit more possible that PvE players will be receptive. But I'd be lying to myself if I said that your prediction wasn't very likely.

I definitely think it should be opt-in (at the very least) but I don't think there should be added rewards because then you'll end up in a situation where you feel obligated to participate.

The problem is if they don't either make it opt-out or tie a significant porkchop to it the mode as a whole will essentially be DOA. Neither option is going to go over super well with the people who want absolutely nothing to do with RNG PvP in their PvE game.

Yeah, that's the other part of the rub. Without a major carrot dangling at the end of it, there's no real motivation for most people (self included, I'll admit) to bother with the mode- and without reasonable buy in, it's going to end up a lot like the current conclave. That is, ignored by all but a small hardcore subset of players. But if you do tie good rewards to it, other than maybe cosmetics? (and even then that's iffy) there's going to be a pretty big outcry by people who really, really don't want to do PvP content- and in a game like warframe, I suspect that's more than a small minority.

It's been in development for something like 4 years. Not exaggerating, it was first shown off at some Tennocon in like 2015 or something. It then went dormant only to resurface again late last year

PvP in this game is done by a separate team who are treated like the backburner by everyone. I would not be surprised if Stalker Mode is like the backburner of the backburner

I haven't kept up with this topic much but I'm personally hoping the "Opt-Out/Opt-In" in some form is there if this mode gets implemented at all.  I'm not a fan of forced PvP in any game; too many giant epeens involved...

If it is Dark Souls'ish type system, maybe it will work but "forced" PvP in Warframe imo, just...no.

The last time they talked about it on Devstream they were pretty firm about it being Opt-In.

As Firetempest above points out, the big sticking point is implementing it in a way that doesn't implode the current PoV players use to play the game.

I still hope they reconsider and leave it out of the game. The same issues are still there and we have no way to solve them on our own like you somewhat can in the conclave i.e with the so called dedicated servers.

Peer-to-Peer with Stalker would just be a pile of smelly mess. It is already bad as it is for PvE where you can end up with any form of host, add PvP ontop of that and it is a recipe for total failure.

I think I had a devstalker visit himself on me last week - there was a degree of parkour involved that doesn't usually occur, and he didn't start his attack with nyx's absorb.

Cool.  So many changes lately I can't keep up with all of them and admittedly went dark on this one since it wouldn't interest me at all to Opt-in to it.

I didn't even consider the lore implications and all the other variables.

forget Stalker mode.. we need WOLF mode!

that's right! why play as the impotent Edgelord we all know and love when you can be the new Hotness: the big bad Wolf with insane armour and status immunity that can wreck a whole squad in seconds, accompanied by friendly Invincible Convicts! this mode would be amazing, it's already perfectly balanced!

now we just need Battle Royale and Warframe will be the greatest game ever made!!!!!

I can't wait for it. Because I'll opt in just to troll, hard!

I'll be setting of spy alarms, using life support, hiding the data mass, hiding the excavating cores.
