New player looking for guidance

I've kinda hit a road block on The New Strange quest where I have to do the defense mission.  It seems I am just to weak to do it alone but I'm not sure what I should be striving for to become more powerful.  Any advice on what I should be aiming towards at this point?

rank up your mods mainly, that's where strength comes from. 

can you share your builds and weapons/frame choices? we can help you more if we know these

I'm using ex-caliber with vitality, shields armor all ranked up. My main issue with the mission is the swarms of enemies melting the objective (and my health as well) My shields are 700 and health 540.  Also with a Decently modded Boltor I just don't do good damage.  What elemental mods should I be using for this?

Don't underestimate Radial Blind, it's potentially the strongest ability Excal has.

Cast it, everything is stunned and waiting to be picked off at your leasure
(preferrably via Melee since blinded enemies take 8x damage from Melee attacks).

You're fighting Corpus there, right?

Pure Toxin can be nice on a Crit weapon, I also quite like Gas Status builds, however ...
Boltor kinda doesn't support either of those too well, so maybe just go with Radiation + Toxin, I guess
(or simply Magnetic if you only have Capacity for two elemental Mods).

Just FYI, you could recruit some help for that mission (in your Clan or, funnily enough, Recruiting Chat), it's not a Solo Quest.

sadly most of the players will say to you is to farm that's true but  when ur under Mr10 farming is the best thing to do and also do a lot of endo farming when i was starting out earth excavations are always played rather than vodyanoi  but it's pretty fun u just have to find friends and also try to get hek too it's a good shotty and ithink the gammacor is great too for gammacor you need to be mr 5 and for the hek u need to be mr 4 as lotus said Happy farming
