devstream 128: how to do cross progression

its simple, (well, making it happen might not be so simple, but what im about to suggest is simple) just have it so if youre going from PC to console, make it so anything you have on PC that isnt on console yet is locked, you cant use it, it doesnt show up, you still have those items, but you just cant see or use them on console because console doesnt have them yet, once they do come to console, just unlock them and let the people who also played PC use them

im not trying to bring up another "oh they should do cross platform/going from PC to console and back with the same account" argument or anything, i just heard that this was brought up on the newest devstream, so im just giving my thoughts on how it could be done, obviously i dont code, or do anything related to what you need to do to have something like this work, so for all i know what i suggested could be impossible, but im just trying to help by sharing my thoughts and ideas

edit: oh, and if they do do this and theres already people, like me, whove played hours upon hours on console and PC, let us take all the cosmetics we have from one platform and put them onto the other, for example on PS4 i have the sekhara shoulder cosmetics you got for completing the vay hek raid, but im mainly playing on PC now and obviously cant use it on my PC account, so it would be nice for me to be able to take all the items i have on PS4 that i dont have on my PC account, or just the cosmetics at least, and put them onto my PC account, which, by the time they do this, IF they do this, ill probably have gotten further along progression wise on PC than i did on PS4, so ide want that to be the account i chose to go with, but obviously wouldnt wanna lose the things i got on the PS4 account that i cant get anymore

The economies are so wildly different with the price of plat being different between PC and console that it just wouldn't work. PC players would come in and absolutely destroy the value of my platinum. That's not something anybody wants.

Cross progression would've been great if the game was built from the ground up for it, but it's too late. There's just to much set in stone now.

There clearly will have to be some limitations to prevent that.

However it's not exactly too late for cross progression, at first the game build was very different between PC and console but up until a certain update not so long ago they adjusted the console build to be as close to PC as possible which also shortened the release delay between PC and console updates.

Again though, in a world where there's a real money economy, it just won't work. It would be like the US and Mexico combining economies and the peso's value being increased to meet the dollar. People with 100,000 peso would all of a sudden have 2 million dollars and the value of everybody's money would collapse after that.

If the PC's garbage economy was introduced into ours, ours would collapse like a dying star.

Outside of blocking all market purchases / trading when on another console, there's no way to do it. And you think DE wants to block purchases for even a second?

Step 1: Somehow convince Sony to cooperate in something can allow people to leave their console for PC

Or just exclude them, like most other Games do. lol

DE is a game dev. They do not need to know how to do something. If they can/want to do something they will make it happen however they think best.

The situation is PC is a different build from consoles. This can mean anything from weapons and frames not being out on consoles to weapons and frames having different stats on PC compared to console. Cosmetics exclusive to a console would be unlikely to make the switch. Things like Excal P. are exceptionally unlikely, probably never going to exist on consoles. Tennogen has no chance of making jumps between platforms.

PC updates cannot be slowed down to match up with the various cert processes. I don't see how DE has enough pull to push builds out faster through cert. I cannot even fathom the mountain of bugs that would be introduced by having accounts having things in limbo wrt stats or even existing.

This has little to no bearing on how DE develops the game. They leave the economy essentially up to the players.

*facepalm*

Real world economies are essentially left up to the people too. It's all in the way the market shakes out. Introducing money that has the same face value but was created for 25% of it's value, would hurt the one that existed at full value.

As you introduce more money into an economy, the value of that money goes down, the prices of things go up. This wouldn't even just be introducing more money, it would be introducing more money that's only worth 25% of it's value but trades at the same value.

Jeez... Now I know how my economics teacher felt when I came to class drunk....

On the economy note, they could just make it so that you must set a main (the account origin device) and when playing on another system you cannot trade.  This prevents the discount plat of PC from having any effect on the economy of other systems.

The real issue will be item mismatching.  It is not as simple as just hiding things that are not yet in the console version, items not existing when the server thinks they should WILL cause crashes.  Yes it is possible to code around that, but it is difficult even with clean code.  Warframe's code has been described as spaghetti so I doubt it will be anywhere near easy to do.

A person who isn't a game dev trying to tell actual game devs how to program their game. This is always funny.

It's not as simple.

The thing pretty much noone seems to get is that the real challenge is tied to game file being present on one build and not the other.

Say cross progression is activated right now. You got Whisp on PC and then you try to pick her on console. She can't just be locked, she doesn't exist in the console game files ! And you know what happen when a program try to call for something that doesn't exist ? It crash.

The challenge for cross-progression is to find a way to avoid these missing file problem.
