The New UI on Console Is Not Optimized for Controller

I've noticed that the controls use the joystick like a mouse way too often when it's not even necessary.

Here are 2 examples to illustrate the situation. When choosing the quantity of the offerings at Cephalon Simaris, instead of simply using the left and right trigger, I need to move the cursor over to click on the really tiny caret and inverted caret. Also, the syndicate menu has remapped pressing a button to pull up the offerings to moving the cursor over to click on an icon while the button is changed to visiting the syndicate at Relay. Let's be honest here, how often does a player need to visit the syndicate as compared to redeeming the offerings?

I know being a port from PC means that there are some unavoidable design choices that reflect this. But please fix the easy ones at least instead of directly porting the UI.

Maybe, juuuust maybe, they havn't adressed this issue because it's actually not an 'easy' issue?

The new interface is DREADFUL.  It's clearly not made for consoles and I have no idea why it would be implemented for non-computers.  Everything used to take 1/3 as long as it does now because they took away all the button shortcuts, forcing one to drag cursors across the screen or risk the d-pad, which almost never starts or goes where one would intuitively expect it to go.  All could be fixed by just giving us an option to go back to the sane version, but no sanity will be had here.

The new UI is horrible for controller users (and many kb&mouse users don't like it either). Most of the things we used to be able to do with a press of one button now require moving the cursor, clicking on things, going through multiple menus etc. I play with a controller on PC and it feels like DE forgot about controller users and console players which is weird because they often play with controllers on devstreams -.-

Yup

all the Press X to Confirm, Press Square to Cancel, and ETC 1 button shortcuts have been replaced with graphical items that I have to Cursor Press multiples times

this is terrible...

Exactly the same thing that happened to the Arsenal when they first introduced Virtual Cursor a year ago; killed all the Shortcut Buttons for controllers.

Seems they didn't remember that lesson...

This is not a reason because there are quite a few great examples in optimizing PC controls for console. Just take a look at Diablo 3.

Also the fact that they removed some of the good controller mapping really bothers me. Hence these ARE easy fixes because they just need to use what they had before.

Playing Path of Exile on PS4 (button shortcuts gone bad) I've become much more sympathetic/understanding of DE's UI choices. That said I wish DE would continue to preserve some of the traditional/expected button shortcuts and stop hiding information that used to be readily available behind more clicks.

I was happy to see the old box/triangle shortcuts still worked for the spiffy new extract/stay screen, but the shortcuts also need to be displayed again.

I'm not sure why everything needs 4 colors now...but the small color swatches are a tad too small for comfortable interaction with the virtual cursor. Wouldn't be a big deal if the 3 new colors defaulted to my old energy color selection, instead one defaults to blue and another to red... 😞

* Fun fact - Box lets you customize the colors of your sentinel's weapon???

The new UI has been just terrible so far. It looks pretty but it's cumbersome to use. I also have pretty bad vision (already wear glasses, doesn't completely help) so this new trend of them making the icons smaller to fit more in a row has been very frustrating to me. When trading things like mods I have to go up close to the screen to actually see anything because the mods are impossible for me to see at a distance. I guess they forgot about is console players who are not sitting close to the screen to begin with. I rush they'd let us customize how many items appear in a row so I could choose less and have them appear larger.

I agree with you also that all this extra clicking to see information that used to be easily visible is annoying. The new relic screen is bloated and inferior to the one before. Trading items for ducats is worse now, old UI used to decrease the number of an item once you selected it to sell, now it doesn't. Decreased functionality for no reason.

I'm still not a fan of the mouse cursor over howwe originally had it, but I would be fine with it if that was the only thing we lost. I'm liking the UI update less and less every time they add something new.

Things can be pretty and functional.

When logging in the other day I received a 50% off coupon. I hadn't decided what to use the coupon on yet but wanted to buy the Fulmin Blueprint for 20k credits without using said coupon. Under the old UI there was a way to buy something without using your coupon. I believe it was clicking in one of the joysticks for me on Xbox One but, I'm not sure exactly. With the new UI I was not able to purchase the Fulmin Blueprint without using the coupon. I usually take my time deciding what to buy with my coupons so that I am sure I am happy with my purchase. At the same time I was excited to get my Fulmin started in the foundry as it looks like a fun weapon to use. Can we please get back the option to buy something without using our coupons? Thanks for your consideration.

"Easy" is a comparative term. Between implementing new pathways and using what works, one is obviously easier.

I'm not sure what you mean by pathways:

- Do you mean literal pathways as in level design?

- Do you mean the 'pathways' of enemies, the pathing of A.I.

In any way, all three, level design, A.I. and U.I. are all done by completly different people occupying completly differnt jobs.

You are trying to compare the apples with oranges, or how hard the the work of an engineer is compared with that of a surgeon.

This is exacly what I said earlier, you can give feedback, but when you have no idea of what a persons jobs is supposed to be doing, don't judge how 'easy' their job is.

A message to the UI developers for Warframe,

While this game may have started on PC it is now available on several consoles and what the users of those system want matters.  I own an Xbox One so my perspective may not reflect the views of Switch or PS users.  All these points are my opinion as a gamer, Warframe fan, and a software developer.

1. Keep a clear separation of PC vs console.  While Xbox will soon support a mouse and keyboard it doesn't mean we all use it.

2. There are 12 buttons on a standard Xbox One controller (LJS, RJS, guide, menu, X, Y, A, B, LB, RB, LT, RT).  Use these to make selections faster based on the most common tasks.  For example, in the relic selection screen for fissures we used to be able to hit X to select No Relic.  Now X is for activating the selected relic.  This makes no sense.  A single click on the relic we want to use plus another button for confirmation is good but a simple shortcut to select nothing should still be there.

3. Option to hide/show preview items.  While it is nice to see what all the options are the preview can be confusing because they are not very clearly denoted.  Yes, there is a little eyeball on them and they are slightly lighter but when scrolling a large list that gets lost easily.   An option to not show previews using a thumbstick (like when in the marketplace browsing for blueprints only or owned items) should be an easy win.

4. Popup windows...personally I hate them on PC and console.  They overlap things all the time.  A good example again is the new relic selection screen.  I like being able to see what the relic offers on the right hand side.  While I understand the colored bars and symbols denoting the rarity that could use a little more prominence.  I digressed.  When I hover over the relic on the left it hovers over the rewards.  Suggestion, remove the right side display of the rewards and keep the hover only.  When I click on a relic it can bring up the confirmation dialog and show the rewards in the new pretty version.

5. Less clicks more shortcuts.  I would like to use a shopping cart style feature like when selling item.  Add items to my cart and then checkout all at once.  This could cut back on all the confirmation screens.  Also, it would be nice to use bumpers and triggers for increasing/decreasing the number I need by one or to max/min.

6. Icons need to be more visible.  The market is now a disaster in that I have to click into everything to see anything relevant.  I need to see if I have mastered the weapons, do I own a blueprint, and is the item crafted.  Cost would also not hurt to be displayed without clicking into each item.

These are just some of many ideas that I think console users would enjoy seeing.  Right now all we have gotten in the last 3-4 releases was more PC annoying features.  I will say the colors, images and more options are nice but the primary features people looks for when purchase, or selecting relics, etc are just not being considered.

One last piece of advice, a UI should be functional first and visually appealing second.

Please consider making anchor points on all buttons, interactables, etc. on all cursor based menus so that navigation with the d-pad is possible particularly in cases where buttons are hard to target such as secondary colors. Also an option to toggle tooltips on/off.

its been terrible for over a year now... the moment we got the virtual cursor the game on all platforms got that much slower..

its gotten like a crappy browser game... no not even that, a crappy browser game AD banner.

its not just Console that has suffered from this, playing controller on PC has likewise become that much more cumbersome and awkward. using a Mouse and Keyboard on Console makes these issues no better.

playing another game for over 3 weeks i got comfy with that nice instant menu selection that every normal game has...

this. has. been. garbage. since. day. one.
