I enjoy the shattered glass build. Basically turn into a walking killing machine to anything that gets close. Just need a good stat stick.

I use the following at the moment but still tweaking it:
Gara:
Power drift, Stand United, Continuity, Constitution, Augur Message, Augur Secret, Cunning Drift, and Augur Reach

Stat Stick:
Pressure Point, Fever Strike, Rending Strike, Spoiled Strike, North Wind, Molten Impact, Shocking Touch

Gara doesn't typically use melee. Her melee weapon is ideally a statstick to drive Shattered Lash. This will typically be weapons with syndicate mods. Opinions and tastes vary a bit on choice, but the idea is to obtain either the 100% increase to damage of Skana or the Jaw Sword or the toxin bonus of Mire. Rivens of these weapons also apply. The weapon itself doesn't really matter since you don't actually use it; it's just a repository for the mods. 

Shattered Lash can be very powerful, especially with the above kept in mind.

Lastly, deathtouch Gara is a thing and most enemies will die to contact with her Splinter Storm (depending how far you buff it up), obviating any reliance on melee. 

There are quite a number of builds for Gara, but it comes down to how you want to balance duration and efficiency. Range and strength help, but usually are secondary to the other two. You need to keep Splinter Storm up no matter what. This is your defense. The ability to stack it constantly means it either needs great duration or low activation cost (or both). You'll tend to see either high duration builds (usually with range) or high efficiency builds. If you plan on blowing up MV in enemies' faces, then you'll see STR builds, usually with some efficiency. 

Gara is really just a gun platform with a PBAoE  death zone. She can use SL on groups of enemies (which lash will depend on their disposition) and it's very effective, if a bit slow. Her shields grant her 90% DR. She has significant armor and decent health. She can make good use of umbral builds. Her DR can also be leveraged by shield enhancing sentinels (Taxon).

Aura: Rejuvenation (Lazy to Forma for Corrosive P)

Mods:

  • Umbral Intensify
  • Umbral Vitality
  • Narrow Minded
  • Primed Continuity
  • Streamline
  • Fleeting Expertise
  • Adaptation
  • Augur Message

Exilus: Cunning Drift.

1x Arcane Guardian, 1x Arcane Grace.

Works for most stuff. Even without the Adaptation back then I had no issue on Arbis.

That one does. Don't ask me how. I've seen videos of people talking about it, but I don't pretend to understand it. I stuck with the Prisma Skana and Bright Purity. 

Some folks swear by it, though.

Well.... what would a mod that gives 90% Reduction do to a frame that already has 90% Reduction ?

I mean on Nova it seems to work but on Gara I never noticed a difference.

They usually don't. 

The further we get from any infodumps or lets-play stuff involving Gara (or Khora), the further the price will drop as people get these but are unaware that Gara and Khora benefit mightily from them. 

However, neither is all that far from prime versions (year or so out), so now is the time to start looking. A Jaw Sword Prime would upset the applecart again, but I frankly don't see that one happening anytime soon--or at all. Mire might be easiest to pick up...but, it's Mire. 

On the plus side, both Gara and Khora are devastating even without rivens, so there's that. 

All you can do is keep an eye out and see what turns up.

Elemental mod affixes on the melee weapon work.  Only odd thing about the Mire is its passive bonus works. (Apparently.  I haven't tested that myself.)

Actually, it could be quite cheap, depending on you're weapon, as ideally you want the highest disposition, least popular, to make the riven equivalent to 3-4 other mods, gor example a ceramic dagger riven alone could add +508% to Gara's abilities, letting you reach over +1150% with other mods.


As the weapon it's self isn't important, you can just utilise an unpopular weapon, with  cheap rivens and roll for the stats.


Heat dagger (1.44)  ~15P; Halikar (1.44) ~20P; Pangolin sword (1.47) ~20P; Ceramic Dagger (1.43) ~30P; ect

With convert lethality. the daggers have the advantage of still being usable as weapons.

I was going to keep my Heat dagger riven for Gara, but I ran out of space/Plat.
Just remember, that ISP mods don't help Gara as much and Impact mods do nothing for her.
