PC Gamer interview with Steve Sinclair on Warframe Empyrean Update

Recommended Posts

Interesting read it is.

Personally, I would rather Empyrean be a brand new Warframe 2 game instead of incorporating it into the current Warframe.

The demo at TennoCon seemed long and overly complicated.  I was watching via Twitch livestream then and didn't really hear any resounding claps or cheers for the demo.  Sure it looks cool and is something new. I was hoping some inkling of the rewards will be mentioned but alas no.  As a mainly solo player and helping friends now and then, this mode seems unfriendly to me right now.  Looks like raid/trials 2.0 and I already see clans and alliances trying to recruit or team-up to prepare for this.

I guess it's too early to tell.  Here's hoping DE can execute and deliver on this that proves me wrong.

That's cuz it was all Hype Fuel and not "It's Out Very Soon". The fact there is no RD or anything, no information what so ever that they are trying to push this out, is that reason. Hype can only get you so far.

Its lately more: "Oh cool something new, can't wait to play in 5 years from now" from "WOW!!!!!!!"

If Empyrean was Warframe 2, I wouldn't play it. I thought the entire demo was boring (and I imagine a lot of others did too, which is why there wasn't much clapping or cheering). That's not what I like in a space ship mode, not at all. I'm no fan of space ship simulators. So, if that was Warframe 2, it would be way too boring for me.

I think Warframe could really use a good space ship mode, but it needs a mode that captures the same sort of pace as Warframe's ground game. Warframe could use a space ship mode that focuses on high-speed action. That's something Archwing didn't really capture well at all. Something more like starfighter assault in Battlefront 2 would be fitting, where you've got a sort of frantic action dogfighting mode. I think they can do something like that with Empyrean, but they'd need to add a lot more ships (small and large) and put more emphasis on the action outside the capital ship. I also think archwings would need to be reworked if they aren't going to add some kind of proper starfighter. I think Empyrean needs something like that for players not flying the Railjack.

I don't think the focus of the non-pilot players should be on crewing the Railjack, boarding the enemy capital ship, and then defending the interior of the Railjack. I think it should be on defending the Railjack from the outside via archwings and starfighters, escorting the Railjack to the capital ship(s) (yes, there should be more than one, the number varying often), destroying the capital ship's defenses, then players either boarding the capital ship, supporting the boarding team from the Railjack, or defending the Railjack from the outside. There should be multiple large ships supporting/escorting/defending the enemy capital ship as well. Again, I believe Empyrean should feel like the OG Battlefront 2's space mode and the EA Battlefront 2's space mode. Having that sort of thing along with the Railjack would make Empyrean a versatile mode that is engaging, adrenaline-pumping, and something that reinforces Warframe's core gameplay experience.

Bottom line: Empyrean, imo, is too boring to work in WF, let alone a Warframe 2. Empyrean shouldn't be a mode that's distinct from Warframe's core gameplay. It needs to reflect the speed and pace of Warframe's core gameplay while expanding the scale and scope of that gameplay (like both Battlefront 2 games).

Throw a projectile out the window towards enemy ship while other players can see it when they're inside the enemy ship. Now let's put warframe abilities through the window.

Exalted Blade > Grineer Auto-cannons.

I read this and was really fascinated by it. Being a Computer Nerd I really enjoy the peek under the hood. I can program, but not anywhere near this level. The nuts and bolts of how the game works is fascinating.

I'm looking forward to Railjack. It looks really fun. It's also nice to see how Warframe has been developed all these years to reach this goal that was once a pipe dream. I, for one, am glad my friends enticed me to come back and give it another try. This game has come a long way since the beginning.
