Doom_Bunny
3 hours ago, Fiftycentis said: good to know, but i don't like golf There is town in the middle of New South Wales called Cowra. This town seemingly in the middle of nowhere is referred to as the Centre of World Friendship and has been awarded a World Peace Bell commonly reserved for capital cities. We begin in 1944 during the second world war, Corwa was host to an internment camp consisting mainly of Japanese and Italians. On August 5th 2am there was a mass breakout by the Japanese who stormed the perimeter with improvised weapons. It was the largest breakout and one of the bloodiest in the second world war and is referred to as the Cowra breakout. Of the Australian troops and 1,104 Japanese prisoners housed at Cowra; 4 Australian troops died, 334 Japanese escaped, 231 Japanese pow were killed, 108 wounded, and those who made it were recaptured in 10 days. It was determined by an Australian court inquiry on September 8th; that conditions at the camp were fully in accordance with the International Convention; that no complaints regarding treatment had been made by or on behalf of the Japanese prior to the incident, which appeared to have been a premeditated and concerted plan of the prisoners; that the actions of the Australian garrison in resisting the attack averted greater loss of life, and that firing ceased as soon as control was assured; and that many of the dead had died by suicide or by the hand of other prisoners, and that many of the wounded had suffered self-inflicted wounds. A recounting by Japanese survivors tells us that although they played cards, carved their own baseball bats and shogi sets. They had no idea about what was happening in the war. They had been rigorously taught that the only honorable thing after capture was death. The arrival of officers late in the war only enforced this teaching as they shamed those already imprisoned there. The escape attempt was not a chance to rejoin the front but to die honorably even if recaptured they would surely be killed. Before the escape, the leaders handed out toilet paper with which the prisoners voted yes or no with a circle or cross. They also agreed on the non-harming of civilians. On August 4th Australian officers where tipped off and began plans to separate officers and transport prisoners to another camp in Hays. The Japanese escape leaders were tipped of the same day. To much the surprise of those who were recaptured, the troops at Cowra only asked the prisoners to help clean the burnt buildings and bury the dead. The Japanese prisoners killed during the incident were buried in a mass grave. *I have one article from the Sydney Morning Herald that says a civilian couple offered two prisoners tea and scones before they were taken again. In 1968 a club know as the Returned Service League (RSL) began the long process of sorting the dead from the mass grave. Their efforts were recognised by both the Australian and Japanese government. An official Japanese war cemetery and garden were created in memoriam of all those at the camp. 1992 Cowra is awarded a replica UN peace bell made out coins from 103 of participating countries. In commemoration of Cowra's continued international efforts. 1997 Cowra is constructs an Australian - Italian friendship monument in recognition of Italians and Australians who served with the allies. All this because I got lost in a town that claimed it was the Centre of World Friendship and so many street signs pointed to a Japanese Peace Garden.
