imgage and gif uploading

I can seem to upload any images or gifs
I've bracketed the image link with [.img] [./img] (minus the dots) but the loading wheel just keeps spinning and it never uploads.
am I doing something wrong?

Image uploading was disabled some time ago due to the database space images were taking up. Upload to Imgur or similar and use the "Insert image from URL" on the lower right of the editor. Note that your link must end in a file extension such as .png/.jpg and not the Imgur page link.

Thank you. I was using the link provided by imgur which didn't end in the file extension. I'm going to go wallow in embarrassment for a while.
