Best warframe & quest path for a new (bad) player

Question

Hi guys

I've just picked up warframe and finished Vor's prize.  Late to the party I know!  I was just looking for some advice - to be clear I'm not looking for spoilers.  A friend who plays persuaded me to start the game on the basis that I'd likely enjoy the stories as much as the gameplay, and the community was very good.

But this kind of game isn't what I usually play.  I'm actually disabled - my left hand doesn't really work, so I can tap one key but I can't flit across multiple keys at once, such as if I need to run, crouch and jump at the same time.  That means I'm either moving or fighting, which is what I typically do.  For example when playing mass effect I'll move using my right hand to a decent overwatch point, kill everything, then move on.

Clearly that won't work in Warframe, and I'm really, really slow.  It was very apparent in the team missions of Vor's prize and I really hope I didn't irritate the poor players who were stuck with me.  So I'm after two things really.  1) what warframe would be best for someone who's going to move relatively slowly, so I'm not as much of a drag for the others players and they don't have to hard carry me so much?  I'm using Excalibur at the moment.  Please remember it's a physical ability issue, not a skill issue - I'm actually a fairly decent shot, I just can't shoot and move very well.  2) what's the best order to do the quests in if I want to really get into the story and lore?

Thanks in advance

Firstly don't think you are required to play at other's pace. Look under your main menu and you will see there is a solo mode where you won't be matched with other players. I actually found this to be much better for me at the start as I could play at my own pace rather than seeing the squad shoot away, finish the mission before I knew what was going on and sit at extraction tapping their feet whilst I caught up. You can also pause in solo mode which is a bonus. Later on I dipped my toe into public once I had an idea of what was going on but I pretty much only play with clan mates now if not playing solo. I've cleared pretty much all of the content solo now so it is possible if a little trickier and less forgiving than squad play.

I think Rhino is going to be a good starter frame for you which you can get the parts for from Jackal on Venus (you get the blueprint from the market for credits). Rhino is a great all-rounder that will  easily get you through the star chart and his Iron Skin essentially makes you invulnerable so you don't need to spend time dodging. You can pretty much walk into a room, sit in place and shoot before moving on. With the Iron Shrapnel augment mod you can manage your Iron Skin and "pop" it at will and re-apply when is convenient rather than waiting for it to run out at an inopportune moment. Don't rank the mod up though as the damage isn't worth the extra drain, the utility is all you need. When you cast Iron Skin you get a short phase where any damage taken adds to the Iron Skin health pool as well so knowing when to pop it and reapply will serve you well. His Roar is a pretty good squad damage buff and his Stomp is pretty good for crowd control too. Add the Ironclad Charge augment and you can tank pretty well(though he is pretty tanky without it).

As for the quests the game will essentially tell you what order to do them in via your codex so don't worry about that. The story is a bit light early on but once you get to The Second Dream things will start getting very interesting 🙂

Don't be afraid to mention your play style to squad mates as whilst there are some less than understanding players out there as with all games there are more than a few who have conditions of their own that affect their gameplay and a lot more than don't but will be very understanding. Joining a clan early on would help a lot I think.

Complicated question indeed. It might not be what you want to hear, but this is a pretty fast game, where you need to alternate between a good number of inputs at time. AND, it's a game that, imo, requires a lot of invenstement (not financial uh). Many of the most sought after activities/rewards need to be done quickly to get a reasonnable return for your time.

Pretty hard to tell exactly the extent of your capabilities, can't tell for sure. You might be able to remedy a little by using a mouse with a lot of buttons and macros. Especially for parkour, that is required at many points, and that requires multiple button press at once.

It's all about your feeling at this point, but if you can't vaguely use all the game's systems, you might encounter kind of a road block after you already spent a lot of time in the game. Up to you.

A single advice : use somewhat tanky frames (Rhino excellent tank for a start). As non-tanky frames tend to survive by jumping all around like maniacs, spamming abilities, or die on the spot. Rhino : you press 2 once every 5 minutes, makes you nearly unkillable, letting you focus on gunplay and headshots. Falls off in the "late game", but it will serve you very well for a long time.

So yeah, it might work, but surely not the easiest for your situation. Best luck with that, it's an incredible game if you can force through this annoyance.

I feel you on the messed up left hand, mine's screwed up, too.  If your thumb's alright and you have enough grip and even one finger that's able to hit trigger buttons, you might try getting ahold of an xbone controller or something. I use a 360 controller and have been very happy with it, but they're old and hard to come by now.  Or if that's not something that will work for you, as Fallen77 mentions, a more robust mouse to move more of the load to your right hand may help a lot, if it's feasable for you to pick one up.  Even a lot of gamers with perfectly healthy hands prefer a mouse-heavy setup 🙂

Most players, btw, are only frustrated by actual leeches, not people who are trying but just less efficient.  People who stand in one place doing nothing but jumping once in a while to avoid the afk timer, people who hide in Limbo's rift doing nothing (of course active Limbos annoy people, too, but that's another issue), those who stand in a corner dancing and throwing other emotes.  If you're clearly moving and shooting, even if more slowly than the rest of your team, players generally aren't going to be bothered by that.  I've seen some players finish missions waaay behind others, and the most reaction I've ever seen to that is people placing down markers to help them navigate, or one will actively go back and assist and escort.  Your friend's right, this is the chillest community I've ever been a part of. Even if people sometimes vent a bit here on the forums, in-game I've seen all of 2 even slightly tense social situations in 7-8 months of heavy public play.  There are tilemaps btw that I still get lost on occasionally 😉  Players get it, and this is the most patient community out there.

But yeah, it may be a bit frustrating for you in some situations if you are so far behind that you can't really follow what's going on.  As others have mentioned, the solo option lets you go at your own pace when that's what you need.

I'm not sure what the Sprint toggle bind is on keyboard (Shift, maybe?) but make sure you're hitting that at the start of every mission as well.  It's easy for a new player to miss this.  Now that I think of it, you may need to turn on the Toggle option in the control settings, but it definitely helps not to need to hold an extra key down while moving.

But just do what you can, and you'll be fine.  Welcome to the game, Tenno!  🙂
