Extreme ban, maybe?

What's up,

A close friend of mine has played warf with me on & off for around 2 years, he came back after a long period of activity to find he was banned 'until 2035'. He has a sort of stupid name, but it's not THAT bad, and he'd played for 2 years without anybody complaining about it. It's a gray area whether it's appropriate or not, honestly. I see way worse names every day.

He put in a support ticket to try and get help, and it's been over 2 weeks with still no help. He made it clear to the staff that he would change his name & apologized. So far, all he has is a string of automated messages saying that support staff are busy - which I don't doubt, I know Tennocon just happened. Still, It's really disappointing to not be able to play together.

I've been reading about other people's bans on the forums, and it seems like the 15-year ban is pretty standard. Do something sketchy, or be unknowingly involved, and you're banned until the support staff can get to it. Obviously, this is appropriate for certain offenses, but in my friend's case, and in other cases where the offense is minor, it's feels kind of mean. He even got banned from the forums - that's why I'm posting here! Shouldn't the offense fit the crime?

Here's what I think might be better: When somebody is banned, instead of just banning them for a really long time with no explanation, you could automatically make them a support ticket or something similar. You could also send them a message explaining what happened & what steps they should take. Also, for something like a sketchy name, there's immediate solutions: you could automatically change their name to something embarrassing ("friendlySmiles39205" or something), or you could automatically release the ban once the player changes their name using platinum on the support site. You could also make the ban period more reasonable - like a week or maybe a month(for less major violations only). I think implementing some of these changes could be better for players and speed up support tickets, please comment if you agree, disagree, or have other ideas.

Also, if you have advice for my friend, that would be appreciated too.

Sounds like his name definitely is bad, given how you clearly don't want to mention it. I agree he should be given a chance to change it though. If he did get a chance in the past but refused, well then there isn't much you can do.

They will need to send a support ticket to find out exactly why but if it was a prolonged period of absence it could be that they simply suspended the account as a precaution.

I don't think so. He was only gone for about 2 months, and the reason for the ban was listed as "inappropriate name".

Your friend may have been banned for other reasons than the name (unless the name was an extremely derogatory slur).

Your friend's account may have been put on a suspension due to suspicious activity (i.e. someone logging in from halfway across the world with a different PC), or it may have simply been deactivated due to inactivity.

Regardless of what the case is, your friend will need to wait for a customer support representative to respond to their ticket.
