Silver-Priest
I am not sure that "their knowledge profane" is what meant to be there. It would makes more sense, that it was intended to be "their knowledge profound", but at some point it was mixed up.
Andvarja
'Profane' is a valid English word, and makes perfect sense in this context, with its negative connotations of being unnatural, forbidden, sacrilegious, unclean. In this case it's basically things man was not meant to know. 'Profound', while also a valid word and relating to depth of knowledge (and likely does pertain to the knowledge of the Quills), really doesn't fit with the rest of the sentence given that it has generally positive connotations and the sentence itself is about how unnerving and unnatural people find the Quills in general.
