And once that weapon bonus reach it's cap (beacuse we know there has to be a cap), then every duplicate afterwards is useless. Just like having a second blueprint for a item that is already in the inventory. Just ask around how many people have duplicate Smoking Body but won't sell them for credits.

Bonuses go up to 60%, say you get a mid tier one 26%, that means you get 19 upgrades out of worse duplicates, you have 13 different weapons 13*19=247 liches you would need to farm to get to max. Would they eventually become useless? yes, is it likely most players will reach that level? no.

The system is supposedly going to encourage players that don't want the weapon to just convert the lich and keep them around.

The problem with that is some people have found that lichs don't help very much and are a hindrance in some missions.  It is also true that some people don't really care to have them or anything else play the mission for them.  Converting isn't really worthwhile for some people.

If the weapon isn't worth it, and the coverted lich isn't worth it, then there is only 5000 or 7500 credits there for players to get out of the deal.  It really would be nice to get something more meaningful out of having to defeat a disappointing lich.

A lot of players are hoping to just jam any duplicate weapon into the gun to increase it's stat, which isn't the worst idea.  There are the floated co-op ideas of trading a lich, but we aren't sure of what features that will offer.  What we may really need is that if the gun comes up duplicate, it can't have a lower bonus roll.  If the roll was locked to always be an upgrade then we would know that any lich taken should be some form of an upgrade until we max out the current kuva weapons.

There'd still be use for it, even if the randomized % bonus was removed and set to always be 60%, since you can use the transfer to change what element the bonus is.
