Ember's ability targeting is off.

Recommended Posts

I don't know whether her 3 and 4 are supposed to require line of sight or not (they shouldn't, imo.) but regardless, I've watched enemies standing right next to me, with no cover at all, just completely ignore fireblast or not get targeted at all by her 4.  Again, no cover, nothing, just not getting hit by either.  Something about the targeting is bad for both of those abilities.

The damage on her 3 is spotty as hell, too (and I'm going to put this in bold because no one is going to read it and still going to try to tell me the thing I'm about to say.) I understand that the damage from her 3 is based on the heat meter from her 2.  I also understand that it strips armor, which effects damage dealt.  But even at max heat, I've seen her 3 hit the exact same 3 enemies all of them the same enemy types, 3 times in a row all at max heat, sometimes doing nothing for damage, sometimes doing 5 digits worth of damage, and it will deal drastically different damage to each enemy on each cast despite them being around the same distance to me, if it hits them at all.  It's inconsistent as hell.

Also, her 1 requires you to hold 2 buttons on controller to charge (RB + ability 1 button).  It should function the same way Garuda's 4 functions, where you can hold RB, tap the ability 4 button, keep holding RB and it will charge, freeing your thumb back up to move around again.  Every charge skill in the game should function the way Garuda's 4 functions on controller, there is no reason to have it where you have to hold 2 buttons, when you already have the mechanics in the game to make it easier to use.

Inferno targets from the camera position, not Ember. Which is...weird to say the least.

Fireblast's damage does not scale with the immolation meter, only it's armor strip. It's armor strip is also affected by strength, but it can never remove more than it's base rank 3 amount for whatever level the heat gauge is. You're likely not seeing 5 digit damage form a 200 damage ability ever, but seeing the effect of a rolled heat proc. Each new heat proc adds to all existing heat procs, and resets the duration, and fireblast has 100% status chance.

I mixed up the damage on fireblast with inferno, which DOES scale with heat.  The targeting feels AWFUL, if it's only going to target in a frontal cone with LOS required.

And that straight up still doesn't account for enemies standing right next to ember not getting hit with fire blast, and makes it even weirder that i have seen my fireblast hit for over 10k, since it doesn't scale with heat.

While the wiki currently says Inferno's damage scales with the heat gauge, only the ring of fire it creates does, as outlined in the ability screen tips. Impact damage is static, so you still wouldn't be seeing 5 digit damage outside of ~300% power strength on targets weak to heat. As far as targetting on Inferno, make sure you aren't casting it while aiming, and you have field of view set to max. It will target every enemy in range, and drawn on screen.

Is a really good write up of how things currently work in her kit.

Vauban's Flechette Orb was quietly changed to scale with target level on Friday (it wasn't mentioned in patch notes so it's unclear when exactly this happened) so it's possible that the same happened with Fire Blast.

Also, when I was messing with Ember on release, Inferno would actually target enemies offscreen or behind obstructions very frequently, so either they quietly nerfed this (potentially breaking it in the process) OR the LoS check is even more f***ed than I thought.

E: Glazed over the part where you said the move was doing different damage to the same enemy in the same conditions. I think the bug reports forum might be the place to go for that. That sounds not right.

I have watched her 3, not 4, hit for over 10k on one enemy, hit for the correctish amount on another, and not even hit a third while in the simulacrum, all about the same range from me, all the same enemy type.  It was maybe my 2nd or 3rd consecutive cast at full heat against those enemies, just fooling around right after her update, getting a feel for everything.  I've noticed the not-hitting thing in-mission though.  I've only seen the damage outright kill maybe once or twice.

She feels really buggy and the targeting of her 4 feels bad, but other than that it's honestly a pretty decent rework.

Is there a possibility that you could record it and then rewatch it frame by frame, i've had scenarios that looked really weird "live", but then when i reviewed them frame by frame you can see it is sometimes numbers overlapping, if anything it could also be used to provide more concrete feedback to the team reviewing for bugs so that they can attempt to replicate it.
