That's a good idea.

Would also like if it was about 40% faster..

What would you think about it auto looting like Nekros or that one Kubrow in an area,
say, when you heavy attacked? Just to loot the appropriate orbs.
Same range as the weapon so it can be modded up.

I feel like the heavy attack should have the ability tied to it instead of the wannabe capture drain which does not work well in the horde style of this game, with higher combo giving a larger orb or even multiple orbs. Maybe then i would use it lol.

Good point. Not sure if the channel time is an intentional risk/reward, or just because it's the only animation that isn't an instant activation.

Tying it to the heavy attack would mean you can potentially waste your combo multiplier to drain, and tying it too heavily to the combo multiplier opens up exploiting the orb drops with a high combo efficiency. I feel like it should be equivalently useful regardless of your mod setup.

An alt-attack with a predetermined animation time would allow for more balance points and be more forgiving than the channel functionality.

 

Other possible solutions:

Just smacking a corpse with it knocks the orb out of them, and maybe it takes a few hits.

Because it has charges anyway, can be: If charge exists and health/energy not full, next kill drops orb. Then you just tune the charge refresh time. Or maybe consuming a charge activates a brief period of life/energy steal, which can activate passively, or with alt-fire. Although that wouldn't also benefit squad mates like orbs do.

Having it passively increase the % of an orb dropping on any melee kill, with that % increasing with your combo multiplier. (E.g. +50% base, +100% at 5x, +200% at 10x) Although you couldn't benefit from enemies killed by squad mates. And that would also mean you couldn't benefit by shooting enemies as you currently can.

Though if it did, what if the multiplier had some bearing on the number of orbs, or type of loot.
Ex. above 8x multiplier has a chance to spawn affinity orbs or something, scaling with multiplier.

Fair point that it could be done any number of ways while still being a lot more functional.
