Forward Artillery: Damage is randomly miniscule, despite BIGNUMBER

I'm not sure this is a bug, to be honest, but I have had the experience several times now when hitting a crewship (doesn't matter what node - could be the Bunny Slopes or the higher-level ones), where I'll nail a crewship with the forward artillery and get a big red damage number (like, 210864), and it either deals no actual damage to the ship, or chips away some tiny amount of the health bar. 

I don't know if this is intended (did I deal 210,000 damage to a radar dish, but miss the broad side of the ship? No idea) or a bug. I am not expecting the big gun to be like Covert Lethality, and kill whatever it hits in one shot, but it should be predictable. Right now, the damage to the same ship varies greatly.
