depends on the location you are visiting, the vast majority of the solar map is often a barren wasteland, beyond a few good affinity/resource grinding spots there is zero incentive to go back to locations that new players may be frequenting, causing them to have a largely single player experience in a co-op game.  Activities like railjack/archwing/etc are all isolated content, they exist to serve up the latest "things", once you have those things you never go back, hense the "player drought", there are plenty of players, just none of them in places that are worth revisiting.

Few things to note:
Player base is always stronger on the day of a new release.
There is a fluctuation depending what other games are up to.
Time of day and events have a drastic impact.

It could be that the player base is all in one specific meta mission. ...we just got Scarlet Spear stuff.. so are you looking in Veil Proxima for players, or on a random nav node?

Railjack and Lich hunting have drastically increased the mission surface area, decreasing mean per-node player density.

Arbitrations, Index, Kuva Floods, and Profit Taker will usually populate.

Even Ropalolyst fight will often populate.

Basically, Points of Interest are spread out more.

There was a drop on number of players in the past months but it rose again to 80k ish.

Plus there's now different stuff to do like Kuva Missions, RJ etc so ppl are spreaded out. Also check if you are on NA server, sometimes after update it changes your server selection.

Do we have a way to check planet activity and player involvement on that planet?

Also if a 4 man goes in but only a Grendel comes out, does this still count for a map completion for the other 3 who were coated in ketchup and spices for their protection?

Definitely this imho. You usually see a lot more MR20+ players in pubg during new releases of anything.
