A more approachable variant of the Tennogen program, for non-professionnal or less experienced artists

Recommended Posts

TennoGen program is amazing but with the load of super good and professional artists doing complexe stuff (full 3D modeling and rebake normals, etc...), it can easily discourage new or less experienced artists that still have good idea, but less time or skills.

So my idea is to bring a more noob friendly of the the prgram which provide overall less control but also less occasion to stay away from the Warframe aestetics.
Compared to regular TennoGen, the difference would be the following :

  • You are not able to tweak the normal map
  • You are not able to remodel helmets
  • The skin in game is cheaper (or cost plats ?) to compensate

With these restriction, instead of reworking the shape with 3D modeling, most of the work would be in texturing, a bit more like immortal skins. I can't say but I really feel like a difference between current TennoGen and simpler skin like this would encourage more new artists to go in (like me) because it require a lot less experience and time, and the lower difference with base skin could give less work for devs to add the to the game.

You can already make TennoGen skins without needing to make a new helmet model, and some already exist in the game. To point out a couple, I will just link some that have been accepted:

Not sure if any of these have tweaked the normal map, but it's definitely been a thing for a long time. And the skins are also listed at a cheaper price too.

Normal map is the texture that make fake relief and require 3D modeling to create : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_mapping
And all of these actually use one (the one on Frost could have been made without modeling though).
Also, the lower price is only because they are "skin with no helmet", which are sighly lower priced.

But what I'm talking about is something a lot simpler, similar to immortal skins that would require a lot less work for both artists and devs, something that could be sold for ~2-3$ or for plats. I don't how other artists would feel about it but I would definitely try this, while I'm not really attracted by the current program because I have no 3D skills.

The price for Tennogen stuff is dictated by Valve I think.  The current structure also lets talented artists get a little back for the time they spend working on TennoGen when they could be freelancing on paying gigs worth far more to them.

There are some weapon skins that cost plat, the Hivelight and Dalila skins for the AkMagnus and the Zastra skin for dual daggers, among others.

Like Scruffel mentioned, you can already do that with current tennogen. A lot of early submissions are basically immortal skins. Most of them are texture altered in photoshop. They are just not accepted because their quality are bellow average.

And i don't think selling them for lower prices or plat would help either, because the demand for them is pretty much non-existent, so it's low prices x low demand. Mind that DE themselves pretty much halted making immortal skins (newest immortal skin is Mirage that is 5 years old and being sold through Baro) and focuses more on deluxe skins.

(note that without a custom Normal Map to go along with such a Skin, it will take considerable experience and talent to make such a Skin actually look good relative to the other stuff in the game - Normal Maps are an important part of making things in Video Games look good without every Mesh needing to be like 200,000 Polys)
