Elite Thralls for the Kuva Lich System

Recommended Posts

This is an attempt to not only improve the depth of combat within Warframe, but it's also an attempt to flesh out the Lich system a bit more by providing a middle-ground between standard enemies and bosses.  Essentially, Elite Thralls are new unit types, each of which possess a pair of abilities or passives to give them a general theme as well as capabilities that compliment either their other abilities, their weapons, or other members of their faction.  Currently listed below are 8 different ideas for these Elite Thralls, 3 of which are Grineer, 2 are Corpus and 2 are Infested.

Grineer:

Hunter:

Spoiler
  • Health: Moderate
  • Armor: Low-Moderate
  • Shields: None
  • Weapon: Buzlock
  • Abilities:
  1. Grapple:  A simple Scorpion grapple attack.
  2. Proximity Mine: A proximity mine with a high knockdown chance.
  • Description: Attempts to place proximity mines behind blunts and cover. Will occasionally grapple Warframes, sometimes pulling them into placed mines. At the end of a grapple, or when a Warframe is knocked-down from a mine and the Hunter has no locked target, the Hunter will fire a Buzlok tracking bullet onto the Warframe.

Commando:

Spoiler
  • Health: Very High
  • Armor: High
  • Shields: None
  • Weapon: Grakata
  • Abilities:
  1. Rage:  Gains speed (fire rate, reload speed, recovery time and movement speed) proportionate to his missing health. This caps out at 60% increased speed at 20% remaining health.
  2. Steadfast: The Commando becomes immune to all crowd-control effects caused by heat procs, electric procs, impact procs and standard melee attacks when below 50% health.
  • Description: Fights like an Elite Grineer Lancer.

Fissure Miner:

Spoiler
  • Health: Moderate
  • Armor: High
  • Shields: None
  • Weapon: Ice-thrower
  • Abilities:
  1. Shoulder Mounted Atomos Overdrive:  When the Atomos fires, over the first 8 seconds, the damage, range, and link range of the Atomos increases by up to +200% and remains as such for 4 more seconds before shutting down. This can only activate once every 20 seconds.
  2. Frost Armor Burst: The Fissure Miner creates a large, freezing cloud around itself which applies a cold proc to all Warframes within it for its duration (12 seconds). This also applies an effect similar to the augment: Icy Avalanche to all Grinner units caught within the initial cloud burst. The amount of protection gained is based upon their level, not on how many enemies are hit. This can only occur once every 30 seconds.
  • Description: Fights like a Grineer Scorch.  Visual theme is similar to the Drudge Brazer.

Corpus:

Templar:

Spoiler
  • Health: High
  • Armor: Very Low
  • Shields: Moderate-High
  • Weapon: Corpus Gunblade
  • Abilities:
  1. Deflector Shield:  Reflects ranged weapon attacks while taking object (no crit or status) damage. Once disabled it will stagger the Templar, then function as a Grineer Shield Lancer's shield until it regenerates (~20 seconds). Do note: since this shield is flat the likelihood of being hit by your own weapons when attacking a Templar head on is very high.
  2. Personal Nullifier Back-Rack: After being affected by a Warframe ability, the Templar gains immunity to all Warframe ability effects and damage for the next 4 seconds. It also regenerates up to 50% of its maximum shields as shields/overshields over those 4 seconds. This can only occur once every 10 seconds.
  • Description: Fights like a Grineer Shield Lancer.

Shield-mancer/Priest:

Spoiler
  • Health: Moderate
  • Armor: Very Low
  • Shields: Very High
  • Weapon: Ferrox
  • Abilities:
  1. Shield Spike Aura:  Buffs all nearby Corpus shields to provide 25% damage reduction while shields are active. Also causes shields to detonate when depleted, causing damage to nearby Warframes and instantly restoring Corpus shields/overshields by up to 30% of their maximum shields. This detonation can only occur once every 20 seconds per unit (like Phoenix Renewal).
  2. Protective Surge: Targets an ally, regenerating up to 800% of their maximum shields as shields/overshields over the next 12 seconds. This also reduces incoming toxin damage by 75% for the duration. This can be cast only once every 30 seconds.
  • Description: Will actively seek out protection, either from cover or from nearby Templar, Arctic Eximus, Guardian Eximus or Nullifier units. (This does not include Vapos Nullifiers.)

Infested:

Cannibal:

Spoiler
  • Health: Very High
  • Armor: Very Low
  • Shields: None
  • Weapon: None
  • Abilities:
  1. Consuming Aura:  Targets and disintegrates nearby corpses like Necros' Desecrate. For each corpse consumed the Cannibal will gain a stacking buff of health regeneration and armor. The health regeneration will equal 2.5% of its maximum health per second and the armor gained will equal 5% of its starting armor. This buff can stack up to 10 times and each stack lasts independently for 8 seconds.
  2. Parasitize: Lunges at a Warframe, potentially latching on like a Kuva Jester. When attached, the Cannibal will apply a damage over time attack to the Warframe while slowing the Warframe. During this time, the Cannibal will gradually gain a permanent, stacking buff to its damage and slow. The maximum bonus damage/slow this buff will grant is +100% / +50%.
  • Description: This is a fast, Crawler-type infested that fights similarly to crawlers and/or brood mother maggots.

Frenetic:

Spoiler
  • Health: High
  • Armor: Moderate
  • Shields: None
  • Weapon: None
  • Abilities:
  1. Protective Camouflage:  Excluding the moment when the Frenetic has tackled a Warframe, the Frenetic is permanently cloaked, has 20% damage reduction, and has a 40% chance to reduce incoming critical hits by 1 level. (Aka: Yellow crits become normal attacks, orange crits become yellow, etc. This has no effect on normal attacks.)
  2. Feast: Lunges at a Warframe, potentially tackling them like a Grineer Manic. If successful, each positive buff on the tackled Warframe has a 50% chance of being transferred to the Frenetic with doubled duration. If the proceeding attacks from the Frenetic kills the Warframe, the Frenetic will regain up to 50% of its maximum health over the next 10 seconds.
  • Description: This is an infested Grineer Manic, it fights like one, and it kind of laughs like one too.

In order to maximize the influence of these Elite Thralls, I would also like to suggest a change to the current way thralls spawn in.  Instead of them being random spawns that occur over the duration of the mission, I would suggest that they spawn in as a group during key mission points, similarly to how syndicate hit squads spawn in, with the warning message coming from your particular Lich.  For endless missions, it could happen on wave 5 of defense, or after 2.5 minutes of survival.  For mobile defense it could be at the final defense objective.  For capture and rescue missions it could be when the target is captured or freed, respectively.  By grouping thralls and Elite Thralls together you could provide players an exciting burst in the intensity of their combat, especially on higher difficulties.  The more your Lich levels up, the more likely an Elite Thrall (or even more than one) will spawn in you mission's thrall hit squad.  Of course, with these units obviously being tougher they should reward players with a couple extra murmurs on kill, and maybe the relics they drop could be of exceptional/flawless quality as well.

Thoughts?
