Warframe 2?

Recommended Posts

So among the trends going on, was kinda curious if there was gonna be a sequel for this MMORPG.

no. they'll just keep updating it until they stop and it dies.

it's a free to play game. there's no point making a sequel when nobody pays for your game and it's cheaper and easier for you to build on the game you already have.

The main reason to make a sequel for a game like Warframe is a technical one. Either the game's filesize is getting prohibitively bloated (Bungie have recently commented that there is a problem to this effect for Destiny 2) or the Engine has ceased to be able to support where the game is going - Kerbal Space Program 2 exists for this reason.

Financially, a sequel is riskier than usual. Looter games like Warframe largely rely on, well, their loot. The collections players accumulate are a significant part of their attachment to the game - it reminds them of the good times (or, if you want to be cynical, the sunk-cost fallacy). Sequels usually require a full or partial reset - rarely can you bring across everything from the previous game. Everyone starts on a level playing field again. This also means that, by sheer nature of the beast, there will be less to do in the sequel, at least at first. Even if what there is winds up more polished, better designed, etc. by sheer value of one game being half a decade old and the other being new, there simply is less in the new game.

Now, are there benefits? Well, yes. It enables balancing passes with much more leniency from the community, can help restart bloated development without a bunch of legacy code which can make development a bit quicker or easier and enables the game to be brought up to tech spec - as well as the other technical reasons. But those benefits rarely outweigh the risks - DE would have to be very certain a Warframe 2 would have distinct benefits, or that the risks of continued development outweigh the risks of a sequel, before they'd consider a Warframe 2.

Your second paragraph adds another "reason" to the first paragraph, at least in the eyes of Warframe's competitors: force players to pay another $64.99 and all their loot boxes over again. I mean why did Destiny 1 only last about 18 months? Of course, DE doesn't think like this; they made a successful by ignoring the trends of their competition

It's pretty much confirmed by Bungie that Activision is the reason D1 went down so fast - their contract mandated several Destiny games.

Unless they update all frames to have jiggle physics, there's no point.

i feel like WF has already rolled into sequel territory after PoE. Its a very different game now compared to when it was just a corridor shooter

games using the "live service" model don't really rely on sequels, rather the idea is to keep adding and updating the one you have until it's absolutely expired. people will come and go, and the game will change, so it can feel like an entirely different game experience years down the line, but it's not like making another game from scratch, building upon it and slapping a 2 on the end. there are some exceptions, like Destiny and The Division, but that's more of a money-grabbing thing: they can easily make profit off of one service if they simply commit to it, but that's not the way AAA companies do business nowadays.

that said, it's almost certain warframe will be on the next generation of consoles, and DE seems intent to keep Warframe running for as long as possible, since they don't really work on anything else. they had Amazing Eternals, but that got canned. as long as developers can keep thinking of new ideas, and people are willing to play them and buy platinum, Warframe will keep on going for years. hell, it's lasted 7 years so far, no reason it can't go another 7.

Only way I can ever see that happening is if DE sold the rights to a different company or if the game lives long enough to require a new engine and the entire framework be rebuilt from the ground up.

Honestly it's more likely for the game to die as a result from changes in management long before a WF2 is ever considered. Especially as the game's monetization wouldn't benefit from a sequel.
