Did they even play it? The secondary is actually better in both range and aoe. In what world does that make sense. Come on DE get real. You kinda aren't even supposed to go for the high damage handle with Gaze since it kills your range so much. It is bad when everyone literally uses the same gear since an RPG like this is supposed to allow more playstyles, but not 1 or 2 weapons of each type. Many weapons are completely viable for normal and high level gameplay. I dont even think you played with the weapon long enough to even make a fair assessment. Where's your data? The reason you're expected to add a range mod and Sacrifice dps is due to the fact that most decent players will be stacking damage modifiers. And even if you dont want to add a range mod, then get creative....use vigorous swap and a pistol arcane. Whip that gun out and get a headshot...boom 300% damage for 18 seconds.
