Anak disappeared into the side tunnel, leaving Floater at the tunnel intersection to watch her back.

At the end, where the tunnel met the edge of Lua's cracked and hollowed inner space, she set the bodies down, her brothers that she'd only known for a few minutes.

There were no funerary rites among the Grineer.  Recovery of bodies was usually not possible.  She'd spent time among the Ostrons, they usually buried their dead, and so did Grineer defectors in Iron Wake.  But that was a laborious task, especially without a shovel, and if she dug a hole here she risked breaking into a cave.

The obvious thing to do here would be to drop them out the end of the tunnel, but she imagined that would leave a conundrum for any scavenger or archaeologist who might find them in the future.  Anak didn't want to inconvenience that hypothetical explorer, whoever it might be.  It could even be herself, if she ever went to explore the rock layer below.

That left cremation.  For someone who could make fire from their mind and breath, this would not be especially difficult.  At least, not physically difficult.  Emotionally, that was another matter.

What was with Tenno anyway?  Two different Tenno had shot immediately on seeing Grineer.

The main tunnel slowly filled with the fetid, sooty odor burning flesh.
Anak returned several minutes later to the main tunnel.  Soot darkened the front of her armor, and lines of salt ran down her face where her tears had boiled away.

((What was with Tenno anyway?  Kacilius had gone into the Depths and gotten a Void puzzle.  Anak had gone into the Depths and gotten traumatized.))

Lucien and the corpus man are gone, already moved on. So is Kacilius. The Maw corpse is where it was dropped, with a note attached.

“For your troubles, Lucien.”

Kacilius flopped into a chair nearby and listened to the conversation. This is interesting news. Yawning slightly, albeit loudly, Kacilius stretched his arms and leaned into the chair. He was tired, and sleeping might let him relax. Kacilius settled into a dream.

The voices fall away as you dream, and you soon find yourself back in Miriam Tanis’ workshop. It is as you left it. The sword still propped against the wall, the holographic family picture still flickering on the table, the downed drone still sparking.

Huh, back here. Kacilius thought as he returned to Miriam's workshop. Nothing's changed so far? Wait. Why am I here again? Kacilius looked around again. This area... is this linked to the Ayatan Star and the Void-Oculus? I better take a look around again.

Kacilius walked over to the picture and picked it up, inspecting what he assumed to be Miriam's family.

Kacilius walked over to the picture and picked it up, inspecting what he assumed to be Miriam's family.

The picture shows Miriam and what can safely be assumed to be her children, two boys and a girl. All three children wear the robes of an Achimedian, but there is a distinctly military tone to their stance and expressions. As you touch it the image grows in your vision and you can hear voices.

“Why can’t Father be in the picture with us?” This voice is feminine, clearly the daughter.

”Abram is a Dax, Namira, his place is standing guard.” Miriam sounds conflicted, as if she does not want to utter the words.

”But that is not fair.” Namira’s voice is not whiny, but form, as if stating a fact.

“It is the law.” Miriam’s voice lacks conviction.

“Someone should change that law.” This voice is new, young, and male.

”Perhaps someone will, my little shadow, but now is not the time to discuss that.” Miriam says. “Now smile, your father is with us in spirit, even if he must stand apart.”

The memory fades and the image shifts. You can make out a Dax soldier standing behind the family, at the very edge of the holographs detection radius.

So a daughter named Namira, two sons, and a husband named Abram who is also a Dax. I do remember hearing his name somewhere...

Kacilius would find himself standing before the statue once more, the surrounding world fading away to leave only a shadow world, populated entirely by himself and the statue. The Ayatan glows brightly, blinding light filling the void. Then it fades, revealing a small tower room, decoration suggesting it is the living quarters of a child, children. Miriam Tanis stands beside a bed, hands on the ruffled fabric. Unlike the previous vision this one feels raw, not refined. A wild memory, not a bottled one.

“Am u doing the right thing?” She asks.

For a moment she appears to be talking to Kacilius, then a white and gold Kavat adorned in grab strides forward, through your spectral form.

It let’s loose a wailing yowl and paws at a small holographic display, showing Miriam, a young girl, and two young boys, standing standing and smiling. A Dax soldier stands behind them, yet still within view of the picture, an oddity considered the difference in station.

“I know Kala.” Miriam says. “I miss them too.”

A voice fills the air.

“You have one new message from Executor Ballas.”

Miriams face fills with hope, and a look of regret as she glances at the Star in her hand.

”Play it.” She orders.

“Archimedian Tanis. It is with a heavy heart that I must confirm that your children were indeed lost along with Zarimman. It is always a tragedy to lose such promising young lives. Even more saddening is the evidence I have personally uncovered suggesting the loss was not an accident.”

Miriam’s look of hope fades, replaced by on of irritation.

“The records of the launch are being... altered.” Ballas’ voice says. “Someone is trying to hide their misdeeds. I assure you this will not go unpunished. We cannot bring back your children, but we can ensure they are avenged. One final condolence. Though it will not replace them, I do wish to remind you that you and your... donors’ genetic samples are still on file within the archives. If you wish we can select a surrogate and grant you a new....”

Miriam grabs the drone playing the message, her face contorted in raged, and hurls it against the wall. The proxy shorts out as it collides with the wall, falling to the ground. Ballas’ words fade away.

Miriam takes two steps and grabs something new from the table. A Dax communication device, but somehow altered.

“Ronin, this is Sage. Ballas is hiding something. Contact the others. This may be bigger than we thought.”

She presses a button and then slides it into her robes.

She glances around the chamber and her gaze falls upon a simple blade. A Dakra Prime leaning against the wall. She picks it up.

A smile drifts across her face.

“Mim, contact Abram.” She says. “Tell him he is right. I do need a distraction. I will meet him at the training grounds. It has been some time since we sparred.”

Her gaze is fixed on the downed drone that played Ballas’ message. Her smile is downright feral.

She places the sword back where it sat and walks out the door, her Kavat following. The world seems to freeze as she leaves, however you are able to move around.

Ah, the man she was going to spar with. And a distraction... something happened... but what was it? And that voice again... whose voice is that? Looking now at the fallen drone, Kacilius picked it up. Now what will you show me?

Who was Lucien again?  Ah well, never mind.  Only one thing left to do now.

Anak scooped up the other grineer's things, and slowly hoisted the dead Orokin monster onto her back.  Under its weight, her progress towards the base was slow.  Her arm was hurting too, it would need proper medical attention.  Maybe this could pay for it.

((list of what she's carrying, so I can keep track of it))
(1 day of rations, 1 small hand-carved wooden container of spices, 2 dispel grenades, 1 Harpak with a grapple modification and 2 full mags, 1 bandolier of 7 Sheev daggers with one missing, 1 air mask with dust filter, 1 containment device for void artifacts, 1 unidentified item of grineer manufacture)

The gatekeeper at the Spire would see her coming well before she arrived.

The ship came hurtling out of what little atmosphere Lua had, its flight askew, seemingly aflame until it got close enough for the frantic firing of its front thrusters to become apparent. At first it seemed it might hit the top of the Spire, but it somehow managed to lurch round it at the last moment - clipping a nearby rock pillar instead - still trying desperately to slow down. It bounced off, landing gear descending in some kind of forlorn hope, and by luck more than skill hit the landing platform with a terrible screech as it finally slid to a halt. Part of the landing gear could be heard clattering its way down the rocks into the abyss below. What remained might once have been called a Grineer Outrider-class vessel, fragments painted in a dull red beneath the riddle of dents, scratches, pieces hanging off or outright missing unto the point that it was a miracle it was space-worthy at all. It rocked gently between the remains of its landing feet and one engine, probably held together only by virtue of its shield generators. A hiss and a thunk marked the opening of a hatch.

The thing that swung out and landed - rather more neatly than the ship had - looked even worse. Wrought of bony growths and sunken, stretched sinew, it was subtle mix of deep greys and greyish-purple; gaunt and asymmetric; with a beak-like face, hooked wings and long talons folded back against its forearms. Pinkish-orange light could be seen glowing within the hollows.

It was, however, more preoccupied with its ship than those watching it. Performing an enormous leap, it latched onto the engine pointing skyward and tried to use its bodyweight to jerk the vessel into a more stable position. A lonely ribbon swayed from the rear of its head - an attempt at ostentation perhaps - while a guttering holo-projection of the Steel Meridian symbol flickered feebly from one shoulder and loops of metal pricked the light dully as it moved.

Another creature sprang out of the hatch, a slender vulpine coloured similarly to the humanoid that had preceded it. Loose flesh fibres waved beneath its jaw much like the ship behind; its tail was short and shell-like, its head horned. It sat upright, nose twitching, waiting patiently for the first while keeping watch on the guards on the opposite side of the landing pad. The ship continued to rock gently in the lunar breeze, forcing the humanoid to concede defeat and land, once more, beside its companion.

Ah, guards. The Mystic had warned her she might cause a little... alarm. Hopefully the Spire had got the message she had sent ahead and the residents were expecting her. Hopefully it had also been passed to the guards. There was, she considered, no guarantee. But what other option did she have? So the Garuda approached, a halting ghost of elegance in her measured steps, pausing head-tilted every so often in case she ought to run.

Ah, the man she was going to spar with. And a distraction... something happened... but what was it? And that voice again... whose voice is that? Looking now at the fallen drone, Kacilius picked it up. Now what will you show me?

The drone grows larger in your vision. Voices fill your mind. The first is easily recognizable as Executor Ballas.

“Archimedean, I am happy to announce the Seven have reviewed your request and agreed to grant it. While your choice of donor did raise some... concerns, we cannot fault your reasoning. A smattering of Dax blood and influence, assuming the donor assists in the rearing of the infants, will no doubt produce scholars specifically suited to the current... circumstances. A Lorist and Gene Archivist will be dispatched to collect the samples and begin incubation. May your children bring glory to the Empi......”

The drone cuts out.

“They said yes, Abram. We’re going to be parents.” Miriam sounds almost giddy, a far cry from the rage shown in the original vision.

”Are you sure you want to go through with this. If the rumors from Tau are true.” This voice must be Abram, for the speech patterns match that if the Dax caste.

”Rumors, nothing more. Tau will be tamed and our children will be among the first to uncover its mysteries.” Miriam says. “Besides, a few malfunctioning drones are not the end of the world. The Empire is not so fragile as that.”

The voices fade and the drone returns to its place on the floor. You feel you have found all the answers you can from this particular room.

Seven is there to greet you, he slips out through the opening and moves to help you shoulder the weight of the Maw corpse.

“Let me lend you a hand.” He says. “Folks like us gotta stick together. Unlike that Tenno who left you behind.”

He sets the Maw corpse down and looks it over.

“My daughter, Sam, she’ll give you a fair price for this.” He said. “Folks upstairs aren’t too interested in proxies, but you might be able to haggle for a bit more if you save the trimmings. Your choice.”

The guards do not react. The reason for their stoic demeanor becomes apparent as you approach and see the Corrupted control mechanisms on their heads.

”Greetings.” A voice says. “Our scanners have detected a Class B infectious life form in your vicinity. Due to recent updates to our policy all such creatures must be muzzled. Those possessing alternative methods of uncertain, such as spines, claws, and stingers, must be left aboard your vessel. Thank you for your compliance.”

Those possessing alternative methods of uncertain, such as spines, claws, and stingers, must be left aboard your vessel. Thank you for your compliance.”

The Garuda paused, her pointed head shifting point-to-point in an effort to discern the source of the voice. None immediately obvious, she bowed her head to the Vulpaphyla at her side.

<I'm sorry friend,> she thought, <but you're going to have to wait behind for a bit.>

The Entrati Son had provided her with a holo-muzzle collar for such cases, but that didn't really cover claws - or horns either for that matter. Perhaps the certification he had provided - countersigned by his Mother - would suffice; she would have to see when she got inside. For now, however, Shadowmaw had to stay here.

She glanced over her shoulder at the Outrider: it wasn't going anywhere. It had, in fact, been one of her better landings, all things considered.

Shadowmaw gave a disappointed rumble in his throat, but did slink reluctantly back to the ship, a swirl of inert, grey spores fading to nothing in his wake.

<I'm not going to be far,> she consoled him as the hatch closed. <Besides, you can still hear me, and it shouldn't be for long.>

After all, they were letting her in apparently, and she had much bigger claws than Shadowmaw, plus some Pox and a Mutalist Cernos. Although, she supposed the latter two did blend in so well the casual observer might not realise they were detachable; then there were her own inert specks, sinking like faint grey snowflakes that ceased to be a moment later. Still, the mysterious voice did have scanners and hadn't said 'no weapons' or no - what had they called it in Iron Wake? Ephemera? Well, they hadn't said no to that either. And so she approached, less hesitant now, careful to keep her wings closed and talons folded away.

“It could very well have.” Ryoko says, his tone amused. “Matron, you wouldn’t happen to have the time, would you?”

The Matron simply glares at him.

“But on the top pic at hand, I did see a rather mischievous rascal perched in the branches over yonder.” Ryoko says, pointing towards where the Indifference was, clearly referencing it instead of the child peeking out from the bushes. “Thought they have probabaly delved deeper by now.”

The Matron gives out an annoyed grunt and pushes, or tries to push, past you towards the tree.

Ryoko waits for her to pass and then makes a hushing motion towards you. He turns to the child in the bushes and flashes a series of hand signals, then gestures to the lift.

The child, a young boy, darts out from the bushes silently, and dives into the lift.

Ryoko motions for you to follow.

Vydraixenne is delighted that Ryoko played along with her joke - less because it told her quite a bit about his relation to the Matron, and more because it saved her a reprimanding. In this good mood, and for the lack of any form of reason to keep the Matron from her duties to care for the child, she doesn't obstruct the woman. It's not like she'd want to play chicken with the kid herself, she felt much more comfortable letting the Matron do that.

Did she mind not saying goodbye to the Matron? She could've called it after her. That would caues her to turn, and see the boy. She found herself indifferent to either human's fate, and so chose the option that would cause the least friction with Ryoko: With only a ghostly 'whish'-sound, she set out in motion, to glide after the boy, and only look back for Ryoko once she had reached it.

”Trevor.” Seven days. “Our friend requires medical attention.”

A young man, in the robes of a medic, approach Aes hesitantly. The sleeve if the robes seems to hang looser around his left arm, and as he opens the kit, he seems to favor his right.

He inclines his head and the lights on one side of his helmet blink off and then back on, almost like a wink.

You wake to find a crowd gathered around you. One particularly brave, or particularly foolish, Solaris patron is gently poking you in the face with a long piece of scrap.

“I think it’s dead.” Another patron says, hiding behind his friend. “Maybe we can salvage it?”

”Bad idea.” A voice says. The speaker is a young woman, her bare arms shaping marks from a whip, a clear indication of time spent in a Grineer mining colony. “Have any of you seen what one of those things can do when it’s angry?”

"What the-" Kacilius slapped the piece of scrap away from him. "What in the name of Tau is happening? I take a small nap, then get surrounded by you guys prodding me with some scrap?" He looked around at the Solaris. "I'm still alive, thank you very much. And yes, when Tenno get angry, we won't just kill you, we'll rip your guts out, dangle you in the air, and laugh as we rip apart every single piece of your body." Kacilius shrugged. "But I'm in a semi-nice mood, so let's keep it that way, eh?"

The assembled patrons scramble backwards the moment you begin to move. One particularly unfortunate Solaris jumps backwards....

Only to rocket into the wall as the augmentations on his legs malfunction, propelling him into the wall with a sickening crunch. He crumples to the ground with a whimper.

The young woman who warned the masses, in the other hand, nearly falls off her stool, laughing uproariously.

Kacilius nearly burst out a laugh. "Hilarious." He said, nearby falling out of his own chair was well. "But if we're going to be serious, that sounds like it hurt." He walked over and crouched down next to the Solaris, inspecting the augment before checking the Solaris for injuries. "That was an unfortunate malfunction. Where does it hurt the most?"

The Solaris goes limp as you approach, either playing dead or having fainted. The other Solaris part as you approach, but remain close by, unlike the rest of the patrons who very quickly find something infinitely more interesting in the bottom of their glasses.

Rolling the rig jockey over, you find the Source of the sound. The box containing the wiring and sensor packs has been crushed. The wiring seems intact, but the cover is ruined.

Kacilius carefully pried the cover off. "Let's see...  I don't know if you're playing dead or if you actually fainted, but as a precaution, I'm going to Rest you." He quickly scanned the augment to slightly stall time, in case the Solaris was faking being unconscious. "If you're actually out, I'm still going to Rest you now and start working on your augment's repairs." He turned and waved at the Solaris. "Does any one of you have a portable toolbox?"
