White numbers when killing enemies

When killing enemies in the game a white number (larger than damage numbers in size/font) appear.  When an enemy with more health/armor is killed the higher that number is....what does that number signify?  I was told that it was related to affinity but I'm not buying it.

The affinity number used to be blue text, DE changed the text style recently with the mission progress screen revamp, so they are white bold text now. Try turning off showing the affinity in UI setting and the white text would disappear.

The higher level of the same type of enemies are, the more affinity you would receive upon killing them.

Personally I found it uncomfortable with the very strong text as I was used to the old linear subtle style.
