So, I've encountered a few of these wandering Necromechs (or whatever they're called) - which is entertaining.

Is there some benefit to encountering these guize? Some 'opportunity' I should avail myself of?

I think they're just there for lols, and to help differentiate the two different worm phases.  In one phase, they are there as allies, in the other, you can find them as wreckage.  Neither really impacts play much, but both make things a little more colorful.

they are just kind of there. they definitely help during bounties though.

I had two Mechs on a mission with me, with my own, so that was kinda fun, if only we had a specter Mech, think of how insanely stupid that be lol, 4 Player Mechs, each with their own Specter Mechs.

At one point, they dropped necromech parts if they died. Now that those parts are no longer falling through the floor, DE has discussed restoring the drops.

they did? from what i understood they didnt want people standing there waiting to get purposely destroyed for loot

If I recall, the issue was only some people were getting the drops (since they were very close to the mechs when they died), while the rest of the squad was out of luck since the parts fell out of reach. I could be wrong, though.
