If you're at one end of a hallway in room 1 and need to visit room 20 at the other end of the hall, it doesn't matter if you visit room 10 while on the way or on the return trip.

depends on the route taken and he often takes the long way around back instead of the same path back

This should apply only if he's at max health. This rewards the player for keeping him safe with a faster clear time. Maybe reduce his shields a tad to make him taking health damage a bit more likely, but yeah.

Players should be rewarded for good performance.
