How often do you switch between weapons during battles?

Recommended Posts

I hardly ever switch to my primary, only in rare cases when I want to snipe a far away enemy or want to destroy a nullifier without killing it.

Primaries right now are just my Amalgam Serration carriers.

I agree, except this thread is about switching between primary and secondary. It is literally 1 button. For weapons it cannot get any easier than that.

I think I did mention switching from melee back to primary/secondary, tho I'm using a phone and not able to refer the line here easily.

Explain?

Sure.

That's the way it has been designed and implemented.

Do you think DE is going to come in here and give you a Book Report on the meeting notes from all of the design sessions as if you are a code auditor or something?

You and others don't like it. OK.

You want DE to change it. OK.

Go to the Suggestions area and make a Suggestion.

Trying to paint this as some huge flaw just because it 'does not work like one player expects it to' is just silly.

I have to think this is truly one of the wildest non-issues I have seen being painted as some fundamental flaw.

omg!! whiteknight! DEfender! (end sarcasm)

I agree. Im playing on a controller (poor switch tenno), but this game has some of the smartest controls for moving around and using weapons i've encountered so far.

The only "cluncky" thing is the gearwheel i think, but the stuff in there is rarely used, and when it is used, its used often for a longer time or easily broken out of by simply bashing A to auto-swap to melee and hit something instantly.

When i want to swap from melee to guns, it usually isnt a stressy situation, the enemies are a bit back and not right in my face. I easily have enough time to sit out the swap animation, look at the ammo numbers and maybe swap again if i want the other one instead. The only time this was a stressy situation for me, was a long arbitration run, where i couldn't reach the shield drone with melee, so had to use my ignis wraith to melt it out of the air, while a bunch of eximus infested had drained my energy for abilities. But then, that's easily helped by bulletjumping around a corner and get back at them, aimgliding past the infested with ignis flaming that drone out. when landed, i could mash A again and instantly mop up.

The buttons i need are usually right under my fingers while im walking or jumping around the map. Most games use those cross-buttons under your movement stick to scroll between weapons on controllers. that would make your thumb leave that stick to press other buttons. In Warframe, you can swap while still running at full speed. i love that.

The mostly intuitive and 'easy to get used to' controls making the basic combat system fast and fun is pretty much why i keep playing and enjoying even simple defense and exterminate missions.

Between Primary and Secondary? Not very often. Usually just keep the Primary or switch to Secondary at the beginning of a mission and keep using that. The one time I do tend to switch weapons quite frequently is Arbitrations, since I I like to bring a specialist anti-drone weapon.

Between Primary or Secondary and melee, however? Very often. Since the melee rework, I've been primarily building my melee for Corrupt Charge heavy attack and/or Condition Overload finishers. Bring my Protea to Railjack, gun through the Corpus with her Baza Prime and Blaze Artillery, bust out the Stropha for the Raknoid, go back to running and gunning. Run Steel Path with Valkyr, "prime" a bunch of Grineer with my Kuva Nukor, slide attack with my Telos Boltace, rip and tear. Run Steel Path Interception with Nova, blasting away with my Kuva Bramma, lights flicker, my old nemesis Malice shows up, I switch to Glaive Prime and tell him to get lost - and leave the juicy metal cubes behind. So on and so forth.

Yeah, weapon switching can be clunky... ...if you use the default keyboard controls. I have a Logitech G604; let's just say I use every single one of its six thumb buttons.

just want to ask, as seems like you're a pc player, how to do the following actions by pressing/holding 1 button?

full on melee mode>primary

I'm curious why people would switch to full melee mode. It's quick and easy to just aim to swap from melee to primary/secondary or just hit melee to switch from primary/secondary to melee.

I just don't see the point of locking yourself out of ranged weapons for an auto block. You're stuck with downtime due to animation lock holding a button down twice for a second or two. In that downtime you're most likely going to take damage and any blocking you did while in melee mode will have been pointless. The only time I've ever used full melee mode was to semi afk or type something.

By pressing the appropriate button or buttons the appropriate number of times, depending on my current state. Muscle Memory, I don't think about it.

I realize you want to paint a picture that dictates DE must provide a 'single button press' to do the things you think should occur in a 'single button press'.

Learn to use the available controls, make a Suggestion if you like, I think your demand is silly and pedantic.

i'm pretty sure you auto-block from quick melee too as long as your melee weapon is out and not swinging. i think what full melee mode lets you do is avoid swapping to ranged during aim glide, so you don't have to like swap to melee again before you can heavy melee. either way, i'm sure some people just enjoy full melee mode

I like how you straight up calling other people's opinion silly while the other guy didn't do anything with similar aggression level

anyway that's your opinion and the way you communicate with random guys like me, I can live with that

As I said, there's tons of proper ways to make the controls simple like in many other fps games, which then I don't see a reason to intentionally make the controls more complicated just to make players to learn it.

What I'm saying is this can definitely be improved

not the word must, it is my opinion from the very beginning, just like you said below,

DE can do whatever they want to the melee system cuz it's their game, I'm just suggesting and asking people if they have similar experience here while expressing my view on this topic, and I believe that's the function of this forum.

So idk where you see that I'm trying to condemn DE for not implementing my idea?

I think the idea is silly.

How is that being aggressive?

Like, at all? It's just my opinion of an idea - not a human, not a race, not a way of life, just an idea about a video game change.

Do you actually think having someone disagree with an idea and label it as they see it being an aggressive act?

If so, how do you deal with anyone that disagrees with you in RL?

I have plenty of silly ideas, that's part of having ideas.

I don't think this a real issue. IME, games have and do have a myriad of control schemes, they do not, in fact, all work the same.

Why do I think you are trying to put DE down for it's choice? Your own prose, bold mine.

My point is it's not intuitive, like in literally every other fps games, there are scroll wheels to cycle weapons, a one button keybind option to quickly cycle all weapons, 3 buttons for 3 weapons, etc. There're lot s of intuitive ways to do the job.

But somehow warframe have to be creative in this aspect and make one button to cycle between 2 weapons and the other button to cycle between other 2 weapons.

How is this not you saying DE does it wrong because other games do it differently?

I get that you don't like it.

If it means that much to you, then go to the appropriate channels where you might actually get traction with DE for a change, discussing it here on the General Forum does nothing to get an actual change made.

Thinking one's wording is aggressive or not is once again a personal opinion

or where do you think all the communication problems in the world comes from?

that's why I add this line right below it but you somehow didn't quote it too

So you and probably any others don't find it aggressive it's fine and I am just saying that I find it rather unnecessary to use the word

you can say that it's not and I can say that it's yes and I don't bother to change your opinion, we all have different understanding on wordings,

it's just my opinion

For the quote you add,

"My point is it's not intuitive, like in literally every other fps games, there are scroll wheels to cycle weapons, a one button keybind option to quickly cycle all weapons, 3 buttons for 3 weapons, etc. There're lot s of intuitive ways to do the job.

What's the problem with it?

Where do you see the word "wrong"?

It's all my opinion and I'm literally just expressing that I'm confused by the relatively complicated warframe weapon cycling system and I dislike it, yes

but did I ever say that it's completely wrong in every aspect and this should be changed immediately like you claimed that I mean it?

Did I completely deny the possibility that this system might probably have a great purpose behind it?

Did I straight up calling the system is silly and serves no purpose there?

I just don't see it, it's all my opinion.

AND, you didn't even quote the next line I wrote:

"I just don't see why, maybe many players have gone through this and get used to it and I haven't, but this can just be improved in an easy way IMO."

I clearly expressed that "I just don't see why", which means that I'm confused, instead of screaming NO BAD WRONG at the first place, didn't you read the whole thing?

The closest thing you may find is probably this:

me: "the system is clearly overcomplicated"

even this line is just talking about IMO(should I always add IMO to every sentence when I'm typing in this forum?) it's unnecessarily complicated

maybe this single line is misleading and I'm sorry, but I don't mean it at the very first place

I never use full melee mode and almost never switch primary-secondary, but use a lot of primary-melee and secondary-melee hybrid depending on the mission and/or build.

Quick melees only downside is that you can't aim glide with melee on. Baseline weapon switch timers are too long and holster speed is a stupid bandaid niche stat, so I don't bother switching other than the instant quick melee.

Still hating how interactive pickups leave you on secondary if you dropped the item while having quick melee on, then you have to switch back to primary even though you picked up the item with primary on hand.

And I did, I know the existence of feedback section and I made some related suggestions there, but just because feedback section exist does it mean that I can't put this in here first? To see how other players react to it? Like you did?

The exact reason I didn't put this suggestion into feedback is that I found in here that many players satisfied with the current system so I don't bother to suggest it.

So why can't I put something into this section before I suggest it to DE?

I am not saying you can or cannot do anything. I have no power here. I have no power over you.

Why do you think I have some position of authority? I am just another random player.

You are getting your discussion.

I typed what I meant - if you want actual change, this channel IME will probably not provide it.

If you want discussion, you are getting it, which includes people who disagree and find the idea silly.

So what do you want from me here at this point?

Hyperbole much?

Is it really that hard for you to understand that someone can have an idea that won't be liked and that has nothing to do with the person or the remainder of their outlooks and ideas? Do you really think that having one idea others find distasteful or a non-issue makes someone this monster you are painting?

Just Wow.

So you want me to validate that I see your POV 'correctly'?

If you are just concerned I somehow implied you are a 'DE hater', uh, that's all in your head.

If you are concerned I read you saying DE should change this because other games work differently as 'hating DE', again, all in your head.

I am going bow out now, have a good day/weekend/life.

Good luck.

For this, yes ofc and I don't see a problem to do it when it's a discussion.

And for this

I thought it was just an obvious exaggeration...

Edit: after rethinking it slightly, isn't you are the one that's doing the hyperbole on my "hyperbole"? Instead of actually replying on my previous points? Lol

Full melee doesn't have auto block, that a "feature" of quick melee, and it's one of the reasons why i despised it so much when full melee got removed for a while. If there is some choice in options where you can have auto block on regardless, then i turned it off as soon as i realised it was there and forgot it existed since i would never turn it on after that. I use full melee because i prefer melee, simple as that.

Autoblocking is a feature of quick melee, it is disabled in melee mode. Melee mode and disabled autoblocking was a requested feature after the initial changes.

I use melee mode because melee and abilities are my primary form of dps, and when I switch the delay in damage is hardly relevant when ranged damage is either required for the situation anyways, or would kill the enemy significantly quicker than melee weapons would. Then, of course, I use melee for mobility on stances that allow it, rather than bullet jumping, due to it being faster when the animations are quick enough in addition to specific ability interaction, which wouldn't work without melee mode being active.

There's also this thing called "fun". I like using melee for more than spam e or gunblade heavy attack, since that's why most people don't bother enabling it in the first place.
