I’m designing a warframe, and I want to test the waters.

Hey there, so like the title says I’m working on an original concept and I just wanted to ask the community a few questions.

1, Does the idea of new frames excite you, or would you rather see reworks to existing frames?

2, Do you have any interest in “weapon dedicated frames,” like for example if a frames kit was designed around a bow, and their abilities interacted with an equipped bow.

3, What do you think the warframe roster needs more of?

4, When I say “new warframe,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

1) I’d be more interested in new frames, sure. I haven’t gotten all of the frames, but I like seeing what other players may come up with. 

2) 🤔 A frame that benefits from a certain type of weapon? Could be cool. We haven’t really got a hammer frame in the same way that Excalibur is a sword frame, do we? A bow may be interesting as well (though Ivara springs to mind)

3) I’m a fan of utility frames myself; I feel like there’s only so many ways to do damage, but a frame that can alter the environment, augment weapons, or affect enemies in weird ways? That might be interesting

4) Hmm. New options, I guess. They’re mainly different options for me to take into a fight and can provide additional layers of modifiers to said fight

1. both. If I had to pick one though, a rework.

2. Maybe a sniper or a hammer-based frame.

3. Humanoid frames, like Mag, but without the gauntlets (looks-wise). Ability-wise, tacticians or maybe engineers (like vauban).

4. More grind, since I don't have the newer ones atm. If I did, then it would probably be more like, "cool, can't wait".

Not exactly. I don't get excited for "new" things per se, but rather new things that happen to fall in line with what I already like. Otherwise it's a one-time-use frame for mastery and never again such as.... More than half he roster.

If given a chance to choose, I'd rather DE rework Valkyr:

Passive rework: Valkyr's armor can not be bypassed by slash procs. Slash proc damage is reduced by her armor values.

Only if it resolves around melee. Otherwise? No.

More front-line tank frames with abilities that explicitly enhance overall melee performance while they soak damage. So far, we only have Valkyr (Warcry) and Gauss (Kinetic Plating + Redline synergy) fitting those roles. Yes, some frames can increase attack speed and add elemental damage to weapons, but the core of those frames (Volt, Wisp, Saryn) does not resolve around frontline melee performance. That's just a bonus for them.

Literally just that: A new Warframe being added to the game.

I like the idea of a frame built around a specific equipped weapon type (i.e. shotgun, sniper, bow, daggers, etc.). The issue I can picture is if you make the abilities have a synergy between the frame and a given weapon type; there would be little reason to use any other frame then the one the buffs your favorite weapon.

Still be rather nice to see it in action.

2. Yes, I wouldnt mind a throwable hammer. Not saying exalted here, but more like what you describe, a kit that revolves around interacting with the equipped weapon.

3. Thor, an actual lightning based frame with tanky attributes. Would fit well with a signature hammer and the idea of a kit that interacts with your equipped weapon.

4. Something that brings something new. Which I think the above would, since it wouldnt be just another exalted, and it wouldnt be just another Gara/Khora/Atlas stat stick.

"Entirely new" is more shiny than "new coat of paint".  Especially if we're talking about fan concepts.  Hearing someone's great rework concept for an existing frame would just frustrate me because it would be so unlikely to be implemented and might hinder my enjoyment with the existing frame.  At least "entirely new frame" can just be a fun dream time.

Not really.  I think the best example we have of something like this is Ivara, and she works well because all of the abilities add utility.  But the fact that the abilities come from her bow is just window dressing.  I also think that if Ivara's actual theme was "bow frame" she would be lesser for it; she needs to be the "stealth + bow" frame.  However, I would not want Ivara to enhance play with an actual equipped bow, because part of Warframe that I enjoy is customization.  I don't want to be like "Oh, I'm playing Frame X, so I can't use all of these weapons now".  That doesn't make things better, it just limits my creativity and choice.

3, What do you think the warframe roster needs more of?

Utility and support, the kind that makes new kinds of play possible.

An experience that is fresh, something that I couldn't have experienced before and probably wouldn't have imagined experiencing.  This is Warframe at its best.

at this point i treat these kind of stuff like... writing a fanfic.
it won't get implemented, and most people would just be as skeptical. but if you have fun writing it, by all means don't let anyone stop you.

pablo have stated on tennocon that reworks is not something that they necessarily want to do. so to avoid unnecessary disappointments i just think that reworks doesn't exist anymore in warframe. the frames we got now is all we'll have.

now that you mention it... would be cool if a sniper frame can do fancy things with sniper rifles, not just some lazy stats increase. umbra was supposed to be the "samurai frame" but tbh he's pretty lackluster as one.

i'm not going to pretend i'm an expert at game design. i'm a gamer, not developer, i don't know what i want, but i'll know a good frame when i see one.

that there will be infinite number of various new frames. a lot of people mistook warframe like a fighting game where all of the characters need to be balanced. it's not, it's a GaaS where DE needs money and will continue to sell new frames. just take a peek at other GaaS, you will soon find that most of them are constantly updated with new "heroes". just like how pokemon will keep introducing new generations of pocket monsters for people to collect. newer pokemons need to keep rising the stakes, one of them is actual god. older monsters who only have the power of stone, or plants, will inevitably feel outdated.
with that out of the way, concept of a new frame just lost a little bit of importance, doesn't it? they can make a "flying warframe" concept in zephyr, then just make an infinitely better flying warframe in titania. i won't be surprised if  one day we'll get a "samurai warframe" that's way better than umbra.

honestly I would prefer reworks. don't get me wrong, I still like seeing new frames, and I know DE has to keep releasing them for the sake of the audience. but it frustrates me to imagine just how powerful some of the older frames should be, when in truth thay just lack the power and versatility of newer frames. we've explored basically every theme under the sun at least once, and I would love for the original 8 frames and a few others to get some much needed love: it's not that they are bad, but they could be much more interesting mechanically and visually. you can't tell me frames like Frost, Loki and Nyx aren't showing their age, because it's written all over their kit. DE's reworks (usually) go quite smoothly nowadays (Ember's first one was tragic though), but unfortunately DE already confirmed they have no current rework plans, so all we can do is hope the new frames are fun whilst we continue to dream up our ideal versions of older frames.

depends on the weapon really. I originally wanted to see a heavy-artillery themed frame, maybe with shoulder cannons and/or and exalted Minigun Archgun, but Necramechs kind of fill that role anyway. I do think there's still room for a sniper frame though: I'd love a frame with it's own void-powered anti-Material rifle with insane damage and punchthrough. the visuals of said frame could be inspired by Ghillie suits and other items worn by Snipers. personally,just give me a warframe'd version of something like this and I'll be happy:

more damage and AoE obviously XD. no but seriously, I think we've got most bases covered. I wouldn't mind a frame that awards stealthy gameplay or using advanced parkour  more, but that seems gimmicky at best really.

"how bad is the grind for it"? being serious though, a lot of people think about the new shiny but not about how we're going to get it without paying. when Yareli was first announced I wasn't happy because I knew that she would be tied to my least favorite faction, the vent brats. with Caliban, I'm guessing we'll be slogging through some new sentient-themed game mode, even if it's just cleaning Murexes like we have been doing for nearly 2 years now, which is fine. the "sniper frame" could have a bunch of marksmanship challenges tied to it, I think it would be amusing to see just how accurate people who rely on AoE are with a Sniper Rifle or Silent Bow. could be easy, could be frustrating, who knows. I'm not worried as I dabble in all weapons and enjoy sniping on open maps and wider rooms.

don't hesitate to share your concept on here: the absolute worst that can happen is people disagree with your concept, but unless they're toxic A-holes they should tell you why it doesn't work and what you could do to improve it. and for all I know, your concept frame might actually be good: not everything fan-made is garbage (but the garbage does get noticed quickly.)

1. Reworks honestly excite me more. New frames always make me feel like an old one is getting a bit neglected. (With the exception of Yareli - she was released neglected.) Like oh nice, Grendel can walk around while holding enemies inside of himself, and it gives him defense. Three guesses what the puddle man ain't ever going to get.

2. If it was supported enough, sure, I could see a frame that's all about utilizing, say, bows. We don't have any good specialists of that kind in the game tho. (Not talking exalted weapons, but abilities boosting any, say, bow.)

3. Read my name and guess. On a serious note tho, fair minion frames. Lots of minions, that are passably good.

4. "It will come out underwhelming or unusable, and DE will move on to the next frame before they're done fixing that one, leaving it forever slightly bad." Like seriously, why can't we recast Grasp of Lohk on full guns? I wanna utilize the damn disarm in more than one fight per mission.

This response was much bigger than I expected and this information has been valuable to me.

Thank you all for responding, and I’ll inform you that my warframe concept is going to be a bunch of hand drawn concept art, with her kit/ abilities written out. I’ve spent 3 months designing her at this current time.

and, if I’m gonna give any kind of a hint, it’ll be this. An example of a bow dedicated ability.

Ricochet: First ability. Charge your equipped bow, the next arrow you fire will ricochet up to 5 times. Ricochet prefers new targets, and is stopped by terrain.

I wanted to design a bow frame for the DPS role, and to do that I decided she needed ways to work around the weaknesses of bows. So, at least this first ability is intended to assist with wave clear.
