Can no longer equip companions that require the incubator, nor can the incubator be accessed

Was attempting to equip one of my Kavats and noticed that I had the error "Your current pet must complete incubation before another can be equipped", and went to the incubator to check if something was wrong. When attempting to use the incubator, screen flashes up quickly and then immediately closes. I have a Kavat currently roaming my orbiter so I suspect that something related to it is causing the issue for me. I know this is a rather common issue, but I haven't yet seen my exact issue yet.
