As a new player I still have yet to find a gun that actually feels like a weapon. Particularly compared to how good the melee in this game is by comparison.

14 mastery ranks and I can take literally any level 1 melee weapon into a steel path and do fine.

A level 1 gun will not be able to kill things in a level 30 mission.

This game is a shooter is it not? I swear thats what it says on the store page, not hack and slash... at what point do guns start competing with melee in this game, or do they ever? I literally do not even carry a secondary on my frames as they are so incredibly bad.

You just have seemingly never stumbled upon the more busted ones. That or you aren't building them properly. Guns have been competing with, if not outperforming melees by a good margin for a while now. Go kill a Lich/Sister or grind some Zariman rep, they give good guns.

Melee is definitely simpler to use effectively.  Other than that, I wouldn't say melee is superior.

I'd suspect like GG320 said, it's a matter of what weapons you've tried or build issues.  What the melee, primary, and secondary that's worked best for you so far?

Either you haven't got a galvanized mod or didn't max those mods, there's also steel path arcanes like Primary mercilles, etc.

Those are the one that made guns surpassed melee until DE release melee arcane and galvanized melee mod.

In the beginning, melee feels significantly stronger because you do not need to aim - or generally think at all. You even get some bonus capacity from the stance so that you can fit in more "power" easily. However, it has a downside - you need to get close and it is really hard to actually aim, which makes some enemies needlessly difficult to deal with.

Once the Tenno is fully developed, a lot of ranged weapons suffer from the single-target curse. While melees get even more splash, single-target rifles do not. That might feel underwhelming when dealing with masses of mobs... but then again, there is a variety of weapons with multiple designs in the game. Just try more, some might suit your needs.

So, in general, I would say it is a question of expectation. If you expect a single target weapon to clean a room, it takes time. But if you ask a nuke to deal a precise strikes, you are out of luck as well. Just use the weapons for purposes they are designed to do.

I'm confused. Are we talking about level ~130 & steel path? Then it's not NEW PLAYER thing.

Are we talking about literal normal path 30 level? Check your weapon. Maybe you picked wrong config (e.g. no mod). Vermisplicer is one-shooting in Oxomoco/Void. Bronco (level 0, hornet strike + viral mods) doing "fine" on Oxocomoco. Or maybe you have Dragon key equipped (e.g -damage)

It sadly is. Many recent changes make people streamline through the game in order to reach the mythic end game as fast as possible. Losing all the fun in the process.

You still have to beat whole starchart so it's not "new new player". Sure it's easier but nowhere near that level where you expect to pick gun and it would work with random mods.

There is an autoinstall option. Do not have to tell you how bad it is, but works for most of the base startchart (especially if you are taxid/carried everywhere and sadly people are).

It very much is at the main course of the game, you´ll notice a fall-off once you got through 80% of the starchart.

The thing is all weapons are VERY dependent on mods, Gunnery more then Melee.
A solid thing to build on weapons is Corrosive x Cold, or Corrosive x Blast, and Heat + Viral. These elemental types are VERY important, but the good ones are a bit rare.

Otherwise Weapons that have higher crit chance then Status chance, you want pure damage and chance prio.

OP's inexperience with how to Mod for beeeg numbers aside.

there is a valid point to made that the 'gunplay' of warframe is pretty clunky compared to more dedicated shooters.

-not talking about dps, but the 'feel' of things.

For example: in Halo/Destiny you can tap triangle at any time and be confident that the game will swap weapons, maintaining sync with your mental expectation of what you're wielding; no need to check the HUD to verify. This isn't the case in Warframe, where being staggered, being in the middle of some animations, or having a laggy Host, can flat out cancel your triangle input.

(there's of course a ton of other subtle touches for good 'gunplay', but that's one of the more obvious situations) -(manual recoil mitigation, reload interruption mechanics, lag-compensated hit detection, etc)

Melee is stronger early on since they tend to have more base damage and you lack the mods to get the guns to do meaningful damage. As you progress guns clearly outperforms melee though.

I have a Kuva Karak which is totally awesome at destroying groups of enemies but it needs to have the galvanised and deadhead stacks to be useful at all (STEEL PATH, regular starchart its totally overkill). Much like melee will be strong after getting blood rush 12x crit combo. Punch through with Shred (primed if you have it) is also important for the hordes. But man, there is nothing like being able to melt stuff after a few stacks with the "weak" or "vanilla" style guns. Always entertaining.

From novices to veterans, guns have basically never been the main character of this game. Guns and melee combat are not ornaments, but they can only be used as supports, and the focus has always been on warframe.

Nataruk, torid incarnon, latron, phenmor, phantasma, braton incarnon, burston incarnon etc. There are many good primaries. High performance depends more on modding of a weapon.

Stuff like destiny has your aim snap to enemies more. Something that warframe really doesn't need to do.

Some people like it, (I don't).

I think the biggest issue with shooting on warframe is feedback. Certain projectiles should have faster projectile speed perhaps, or some "charging" effects while you prepare your shot. Guns like the boltor to the soma feel normal, but then weapons like the ogris would feel slugish in comparison.

Getting stunned out of swapping a weapon will happen anywhere. Isn't really a shooting issue. You'll get stunned in melee too. (Why people run mods for that sort of thing.)

There are 2 types of weapons

A low damage hit RoF weapon usually designed for head shots and weak points

While bigger blast weapons like tonkor can hit anywhere and do serious damage.

The problem is there is very little meaningful gain for using her precision weapons.

DE buffed the melee at some point, easily powercreeped the guns real hard. But it may also be the lacking good modding  knowledge you have ingame, I don't blame new players not understanding real quick. The game is not great on telling you how ingame outside watching guides/ builds of other players. You can also ask on the Q&A chat regarding the weapon build your specifically looking for.
