It's likely that the 500W PSU is not providing enough amperage for the 280X. The card typically draws approximately 250W under load, and sometimes more. That works out to ~21 amps, which exceeds the 18 amps being provided per rail on your 500W power supply. The FX-6100 is fine. Upgrade the power supply to get full use out of your 280X.
