SabreUr
In lore Skana is described as "pillar of Tenno culture, simple weapon that can be devastating in hands of true master", yadda, yadda. In reality it's very, very mehish. It does not do anything flashy, it's weak. Probably there is player who put 8 Forma on it, six catalysts, two reactors, Heavy Caliber, Serration and Warm Coat and declares it Slayer of the Universe, but most players will switch it to anything as soon as they reach rank 30, or even earlier. So how about introducing unique mechanism to this weapon - with each mastery rank Skana (and it's Prime variant) gains significant (not OP, significant) boost in stats, some additional attribute (more than one target per slash?) or special attack (Melee 2.0, wink, wink). Ideally it would allow player to choose what kind of upgrade they want to introduce, but I guess, that it would require too much code rummaging for small effect. That would actually make it viable weapon for an endgame (or late midgame), would give another meaning to Ranks, and make it's description real. Thoughts? Mr.ominous
This idea has potential; however, DE generally wants to encourage people to spend their money.

Yeah I kinda switched to the Cronus before it was maxed... and now I have to relevel it to get the mastery :/ And you have it all wrong, by putting Heavy Caliber in your reactor'd Skana you are missing out on the superior Infiltration/Undying Will build. (I'd like it to be a bit more special yes, like a Jedi's lightsaber or a Judge's Lawgiver).

Well, people would still have to buy new weapons - you don't get new mastery ranks for free. Liverslices
Infiltrator/ Undying will sounds powerful, I'll try it. oh gawd my sides In all seriousness, melee 2.0 is coming. We cant really ask for reworks or melee buffs with it coming. It was confirmed that all melee is getting buffed. However, the skana is the starting weapon. It is never going to be the best weapon in the game or anything close to it. #skanaprime4lyfe

Neuhnee
This is a proven, viable, concept like the Dispersion Pistol from Unreal. You have a starter weapon which is pretty unimpressive, but through upgrades it can become the most powerful weapon in the game.
Shadebain
Absolutely love it. You would still have to level the other things to get this perk too, which is great, because DE still gets money! And perhaps I could muster up the courage to dust off my Skana Prime. (But for the love of everything that is righteous in this world give it a graphical update) DE PLS D:

Volt_Cruelerz
I suggested a similar idea before for event weapons and once saw a thread suggesting we do this for all weapons.

Also i forgot to mention in my last post, De is spreading rumors about a Focus System. The idea is that we would be able to specialize frames down different skill paths. It is possible that weapons will go this same route.

They announced it in a livestream and on the DC before that...

Othergrunty
I had a similar idea, though one with a more primitive mechanic to let the Skana stay relevant: https://forums.warframe.com/index.php?/topic/152977-improving-the-skana-how-it-could-stay-a-true-companion/
HAYABU5A
i would love this there are a few games that have a similar mechanic, where the most simple and basic weapon can eventually become the most powerful if u follow that long hard road i remember in ninja gaiden how the wooden sword was the ultimate weapon, its such great sentiment its carries the spirit of the duel between the two 1600s swordsmen musashi miyamoto and sasaki kojiro, fighting on the shores of ganryu island musashi used a wooden boat oar he had carved into a make shift wooden sword using his short sword to kill sasaki kojiro who was an expert at using a nodachi (long sword) and was considered one of the best and most dangerous duelists around sasaki went for a long range and lighting fast swallow strike which had already killed countless men but musashi closed the gap jumping high in the air, using the sun at his back to distort the striking distance and cracked sasaki over the head with his blunt weapon while the nodachi barely missed cutting musashi's topknot on his knees kojiro tried to follow up with a killing blow but musashi struck so hard on the side of the body it smashed his ribs, puncturing his lungs and killing him the skana could be our wooden sword, a symbol of perfection and mastery, comming full circle making that which is weakest now the strongest
