Hey, there op, it's not that bad, if you want your Tenno to be male then you go _right_ ahead, all male, all the time.

Of course that male Tenno still _wears_ the female Warframes, marvels of techno-organic technology that the are, the body just adjusts, cool no?

So no more problems playing a female character, right?

Posted

No, it would be awesome. The reason I hate playing female frames ingame is because DE seems to tow the party line with female body types. Nova was a SLIGHT departure from the rampant exploitation in the gaming industry but not far enough for me,

Female Rhino would be perfect.

Well they seem to have taken a different route with Zephyr who seems to be more feathers than woman.

Good stuff, Ronyn. Agreed 100 percent with you. We should talk more!

Gotcha.

To clarify-

Warframe has seen some real success over this last year and the team working on it has grown.

As it continues to grow they will apply different people to different teams working on different things.

The question of whether something that makes money is a waste of time is hard to nail down.

Balancing cost verses return requires factoring in things like work/time verses output as well as some intangibles like how much catering to player identity might increase each players time played.

In this case: Making an alternate gender for a frame is quite a lot of work (models and animations) but does not require the same amount as a brand new frame which also has to settle on theme, get a group of powers and stats. We have questions like : How different would an alt gender frame really be? Mostly a shape/proportion change or something more? Which leads to the question of: will the art director need to be heavily involved in each alternate gender or can they have a subordinate do most of it allowing the art director to simply add notes and approval when necessary? ETC..

Which leads to the larger question of would such a choice increase the players sense of individual identity through such a fundamental choice in appearance? How many people care about this is unknown. To say "don't focus on gender, focus on the game" is something of a mis-classification. No single aspect of the game is the game in itself, the game is many aspects combined together.

Sidenote-LOL is a MOBA not a co-op action game with persistent character growth.

It may not be applicable.

At the end of the day...

I feel like it's easy to just say "they should work on X more than Y" but we don't really know what would work out better long term.

I get what you mean, but in what way does this game have to do with genders? To say that the gender plays an aspect in the game means that gender actually have a place in the game. Does it effect the warframe itself? Does it buffs and/or weakens the player for being a male/female? No the warframe just happens to be a guy or a girl. And I used Lol as an example because normally you do not choose a character in LoL because it is a male or a female, you choose the character because you enjoy actually playing as the character.

I'm sure DE's art director may had some kind of ideas for this at one point but decided that it was probably better not to do it because of either costs or internal reasoning. I am sure that it just can't be passed off to a subordinate either becuase all work has to go through the art director at some point.

As for making money I really think that this will only effect the current fan base that want that warframe's gender not the majority of gamers playing. When a new frame comes up, a majority of players will come online to either start farming for it or buy it directly. If a gender related one comes up, players who want that gender version of that frame will only care while others, who don't care about the frame at all or are happy with the original version will not care at all. I think adhering to what will draw the most players back to playing is probably what DE will focus on.

Do not get me wrong, I do not mind gender choice in these types of games. If Warframe already had genders from the beginning I wouldn't mind them doing it. But to do it now? With 20+ Warframes including primes thats alot of work for a feature that they don't really need. They would need to double the # of warframes just to accommodate "all the male or female" frames. And they are are basically doing that with the whole "prime" warframes thing, tbh I don't like primes either since their desings could be used for new warframes instead just a prettier version of the same frame I already have

When I say Gameplay, I mean the mechanics, variety of modes, enemy types, new types of frames, new weapons, ect. I did not mean the game as a whole. Right now there are not alot to play around with and again, I rather have 2 new warframe over 2 gendered warframes any day

So being a woman now means visible boobs and butt? Well gosh, so basically you're saying these^ ladies are more military than woman now?

Zephyr is as much a woman as all the rest of the lady frames. You don't need to see her boobs to declare her a woman, that's just silly.

By your logic, Excal must be less of a man since he has no codpiece.

I was just saying compared to the other frames who have obvious female bits Zephyr is more style and function and less a skin tight ninja bondage outfit. I may have not worded it well lol. And when a soldier is in uniform they are military first, and to be respected as such. I don't care if a soldier is a man or women and your insinuation is insulting as all hell but I assume you are responding in anger to a poorly worded statement on my part and don't mean any personal offense lol

That's the rendered one.

Yeah I remember that, in one of the Trailers D.E. made there was a female excalibur.

I dismissed it as a work in progress Nyx however, I will see if I can find the video.

HAHAH! Found it!

Also, I have no strong feelings one way or the other on this topic.

It would be cool, but unnecessary.

The video.

There you have it. All proof we have of its existence. Did no one ever buy it?

There is a certain concept balance and relation in frame design.

Rhino male tank, Saryn female tank

Oberon male healer, Trinity female healer

Vauban male controller, Mag female controller

Nekros male pet user, Nyx female pet user (one creates them, other controls them but the effect is similar)

Excalibur male fighter, Valkyr female fighter

Interesting to notice that two stealth frames are both males, perhaps banshee has some stealth or something, read bout her little.

If Saryn was male she would probably be my primary warframe, I love toxic stuff.

It was never for sale, or even in-a-game-that-anyone-outside-DE-saw. That video is pre-alpha, I.E. before closed beta.

You could make this same argument about any cosmetic aspect of a game.

Clearly, cosmetic aspects do matter to a game.

But if you're looking for deeper thoughts on that....

Player identity is made up of may parts both functional and aesthetic.

Gender is a very common component to that.

Warframe currently doesn't do much with player identity.

Whether they bring gender into that or not....they would be well served working on that.

Hmmm. I just got an idea that is worth its own thread. :-)

yes I understand. I'm saying that being in a different genre might make what works for players in LOL not quite transferable to what works for players in warframe.

Like I said before, sorting out what will draw in money is tricky.

I also wish there were male/female counterparts to each frame. I am a girl and I just don't like playing as bulky ugly males with long.... yeah.... I'd much rather play as a female. I have all the female frames and am hesitant to start making the male ones. Vauban and Rhino both appeal to me as frames, but.... they're just ugly. Not in reality. They did a nice job making them, but females are just prettier... But I doubt it will ever happen. Not too big a deal for me.

pretty much totally agree with all of this! although; i don't think EVERY male frame should get a female-version (that'd take forever for the devs to make and hold back tons of other content), just the cool frames.

mainly Nekros

i know that won't ever happen most likely. but hopefully the Ghost (and Time-Lord) frame(s) are fems.

Well as a player who recently spent my 1 year anniversary with the game as well. This suggestion has popped up tons of times and no, they won't do that. If they will do something like this however, it will be either with the same theme and completely new skill set or then different theme but similar visuals. Like Excalibur and Nyx, Volt and Zephyr.

This would have easily been found by using the search button.

You know full well we like to have the same conversation over and over again.

It just seems like it would be a hassel and you couldn't make everyone happy.  I understand why people would want to play all male or female versions of frames but personally I don't care.  I like the uniqueness and design that has gone into them all.

Yup, I agree and so does DE, especially Mynki.

No, but female players aren't necessarily going to want to play an over-sexualized female avatar either. And I for one absolutely refuse to play as such.

Playing a female Warframe and playing a scantily clad skank on a Korean mmo are two entirely different things.

idk... i like playing vindictus from time to time. My vella kicks so much &#!, i can care less about how @#&*ty she looks while doing it.

Yup, I agree and so does DE, especially Mynki.

Actually in an early devstream Mynki said that we was developing frames under the impression that they would have both a male and female version of each. That is why you see those early sketchs of female ash and later on the female Excalibur that was turned into nyx.

at no point has Mynki stated that he doesn't want both sex on each frame.

BTW-Who said the uniqueness and design of a frame is tied to it's sex?

%$# are %$# and $&*^s are $&*^s....either way it all in our anatomy. We're all human so you shouldn't be flustered about what sex something in a fictional plain is.

Oh yes, because it makes sense to magically grow boobs if you enter another warframe.

And to have a totally different figure.

People still on the "one character" thing are they?

Lol, you do realize that having breast plates are completely impractical and could actually kill you?

How do you know they are real bewbz and not just armor/padding? This is the future anythings possible... Plus I'm going on the idea that these things are purely just suits which to me seems more legitimate. It's arguable since DE haven't confirmed but they've made links to Dark Sector which did involve a Warframe-like suit too so...

Hi! So yeah, just what i said in the title. Would it be better if all Warframes has a male and female model? I would love to use Nyx or Nova but the thing is.... the model bothers me since i'm a male and using a female character is sort of awkward for me especially when my friends showed and saw me playing using a female character. Can we please add this to the next update? Or maybe the 13 update since this one will be a big one. Thank you for reading and i hope this suggestion is agreeable :)

Sounds like you some personal issues to work through if you cant play a female char or its that uncomfortable to do so that it bugs you for your friends to see. You should probably get more comfortable with yourself and realize nobody gives a rats &#! if youre male or female on the other end just as long as you dont drag the party through the mud. Otherwise, im going to assume this is an april fools thing, to which case nice b8 m8

Gender of the char model isnt gonna matter all that much, you carry yourself as a male youre going to be perceived as male, carry yourself as female youll be seen as female. I play female and male chars all the time, there has never been confusion or care as to my gender (like it really even matters)

EDIT: on a side note, lets not bring up the devil that is vindictus and nexon lol I feel shame to admit i dumped many hours into that game.

if we're talking in the real "sense"...why? to all of what you just said. the dark sector video pretty much proves this whole theory.

Agreed! One thing I truly love about Warframe -- that makes it so different than most games out there -- is that females are represented equally and without being overly sexualized. I would be out of here so fast if it went any other direction.
