When Do You Pull Out Your Sword?

In the livestream, the Dev's pretty much wondered when and why players take out their melee weapon to attack as oppose to just shooting.  So...when do you pull it out?

 

I use it when they are extremely close or they surprise me from behind a door.  Sometimes when I see a large group I would charge ahead and swing instead of shooting.

Jump attacks with heavy weapons. Coptering. Slide attacks are kind of useful for sprinting and slashing in emergencies.
That's about it.

Well when they're within melee range for a start....

 

When it comes to fighting infested I go through almost exclusively with melee, it's just faster and more efficient, I'll drop any that are further than about 20m away but anything close I just wait for it to close with me. When fighting Grineer or Corpus it's mainly for knock downs.... It's sometimes better to incapacitate a group of 5 enemies rather than simply killing 1 or 2 in the same amount of time.

For killing enemies, I either don't use melee or only use melee. Very rarely I would use both.

As a Valkyr player, I spend a lot of my time in melee, mainly because I like it (and look forward to melee 2.0), but also because I run point in my group of friends. So I will usually slide > melee into an enemy to open up (or jump attack if it is a mob). I like being the distraction while my friends do all the shooting.

There is no other reason for me to use a melee weapon when my guns can do 1000 times their damage with a single shot.

What we do now wont translate directly to what we will do in the new system.

So this is hard to answer with any relevance to melee 2.0.

I use melee for jump attacks to stagger foes. I also use it a lot for Infested, when they swarm. You can usually just cut a swath through infested, saving ammo and decimating them easily (especially the dog things). I also use the slide-melee attack a bit, but more for fun than utility.

 

When enemies pop around a corner and get in my face, I often hit melee as well. I use a mouse side-button for melee to make it more accessible too, I hated using the default key. With the mouse button I can melee without sacrificing my mobility, but using "E" sucked for me, lol.

Coptering, knocking down enemies with a heavy weapon, and occasionally if I'm using an ogris and an enemy shows up next to me.

If I can slide into and enemy instead of shooting it I will. Also if i can 1 or 2 shot with a normal strike I will.

Apart from coptering . Sometimes I perform the 'block' stance to show off my prime melee.

I have spares catalysts, but I don't own any catalysed melee weapon by choice.

 

The melee at low rank was really un-rewarding. You take a lot of damages, you deal S#&$ damages.

I gave up.

Couple jump attacks to aoe or knockdown nearby enemies, or just when there's the mission bonus thing to kill 10 enemies with melee weapon ;)

 

Sometimes just cause it looks cool, or I want to sneak attack.........though my sentinel often has other plans that ruin that lol

I don't it will not kill the enemy in front of me so I move back and shoot it instead as that will kill it.

This question actually made me realize that I don't really think about what I do when I fight. I just react and push towards the goal in the game in a general sense of the word. I guess the answer would be "whenever appropriate", which is so damned vague :P

When it calls for it.

 

I usually have a high damage slow RoF primary (snipers, bows, Latron) so when the enemy gets in melee range, Its time to dish out the red sword and dagger (dual heat swords). The infested "loves it" since they rush to me. and it is "to die for" since infested starts piling dead on my feet.

 

... its that, or my other 3 buddies are killing them from range and makes me think my swords are awesome T.T

 

other times, its more situational. for example, when on the second floor and a fight broke out down the first floor, jump + attack to the middle of the fight for aoe. then hack away.
