Adding lore is the exact opposite of stupidity : it adds a more complex structure in a game (than just shoot and teach democracy to the baddies)

It depends on the context, take a game like Loadout there is no lore because lore would not fit there and thus it does not matter but in a open world game like borderlands and in depth lore brings that world alive thus enhancing the game.

Basic playability. Great lore is great, but if the game is a buggy mess you can't play for more than five minutes straight without it blowing up in your face, it's not going to be a good game.

Try Gunnm. Or Battle Angel Alita, whatever it's called in your country.

Similarities between Gally/Alita and the tenno are striking. Both being amnesiac super-warriors from a past war, where they held shady roles contrasting with their somewhat more righteous present one. Both also follow the directives of a mysterious person who seems to know a lot about them, yet has questionable motivations (I know that people who read the manga will raise an eyebrow at me making a parallel between Nova and Lotus, but I'm doing it anyway).
