Honestly its a vanity item for 3 types of people.

1. Dark sector fans, as we all know dark sector was supposed to be what warframe is.

2. People who like to show off.

3. Hoarders/collectors.

Yesterday i spent all my remaining platinum for that armor, and i dont regret. Damn, its best cosmetics i ever seen in warframe and Excal will be again one of my most played frames.

Unnecessary or otherwise, I bought the skin. I had the same thinking as you, OP, about the founder's package. I could have bought it in order to obtain the excalibur prime warframe, but I didn't because I thought, at the time, that excalibur sucked and would probably never use him past rank 30. Now, I horrendously regret that decision. The proto skin will never be available again, and, to a collector like myself, that's a nightmare. I feel crappy enough for not obtaining the cicero mods and event badge because I had dropped this game at the time of the event. This is a good game, I think, and collecting limited-time offers like these make people like me very happy.

 

Also, when I logged in earlier, my prize of the day was a 50% platinum coupon. Like hell I wasn't going to buy this skin. 150 platinum for a limited-time item is nothing.

 

Good lord I read this. Time to spend 150 platinum, even though I will never use it. Am a collector too.

pretty sure it has slightly boosted status or crit as well. It also has a unique skin. Don't complain that your free weapon isn't a super l33t weapon.

People are hiking up prices on mods and prime parts so they can buy the proto armour.
