We Played, We Got Obsessed, We Got Bored... Read On

I started playing warframe a month ago with a few friends and once we tried it, we were addicted. The game is very well done... But now we are rather bored of the game, and although my friends don’t play it anymore.. I still have faith! The point of this post is to give feedback on the game in general, what we liked, and what we don’t, and more.

(please don’t flame me for stating stuff that’s already been said. Feel free to put in your own two cents on the subject as well) Also, sorry if I state something that is already being planned by the developers, I haven’t read everything they plan to do with the game.

When we started playing, the first thing that caught our eyes was the atmosphere, setting, detail, the stages, and the looks of the characters. Very nice job on levels and aesthetics. Discovering all the different places and seeing new, cool stuff was probably the best part.

Second for me was the combat. Running around with all my friends, feeling badass and powerful as I slide around, ducking, running up walls, slaughtering hundreds of grineer. The fast paced nature of the game is exciting and fun and the combat makes you feel deadly.

Next is the Mods, discovering mods to put on your warframe and weapons was interesting, playing around with different builds, upgrading the mods themselves to be powerful in your own way.  Alongside this I want to note that although limited, the customization of colors and skins, headpieces, and syandanas was nice as well.

So after a few days I decided I loved the game; this is where I made a horrible mistake, (you can call me stupid if you want, but anyway.) I spent 200 dollars on the game because I’m a sucker for deals. With it I purchased formas, catalysts, reactors, the warframes and the weapons I wanted. I spent another 50 for my spouse, and with whatever I had left I spent on dragon mod packs (this is the stupid thing) because gambling is fun.  Buying my warframes and weapons was a huge mistake. Have you ever cheated in a game? I remember when I was younger I played Grand Theft Auto. The game was fun, and even more fun when I tried cheating, man I had a blast, literally. But after a few days of being a terror on the world, I realized how boring the game suddenly became, you had everything, you tried everything, you didn’t have to work for it. There wasn’t much else to do. Same concept. Buying whatever I wanted actually ruined the fun of grinding for it. It’s the journey, not the destination, right?

[You can laugh and say “Well then why did you buy it all?” If you don’t have a choice and you are forced to grind for everything that you want, then it’s worth it. You have fun and you feel good for working towards what you want, and when you get it, you feel accomplished. However when someone offers you a shortcut to purchase something quickly, suddenly that grind doesn’t seem fun anymore, and if you do grind for it, actually getting it isn’t much of a reward, it feels like a time sink, you could have gotten it faster. You’re better off buying it if you can afford, (the only exception I can think of is when we were starting out, purchasing a new warframe and weapon was worth it, the game would have been really boring if my friend was stuck with mag for a while, or me with loki.)]

Next the Prime bundle came out, and I bought me and my spouse both a 150 pack. So as of today  I have spent a total of about 600 dollars on this game between us. Thinking about it, that’s a LOT of money for what we have gained. Now this is where I messed up badly, I have probably spent close to 1700 platinum or more on dragon mod packs, I didn’t know what else to do with the money at the time, I hadn’t known about trading. I would like to assume that the developers of this game aren’t out to scam people, but boy do I feel scammed. For the same price of two mod packs, I could buy a maxed serration mod through trade. That totally seems fair. I could go on for quite a while at how overly priced and unfair the market is, and when you look at how expensive stuff is, 30 platinum for 9000 credits> etc > You can’t help but wonder if you really are being scammed on purpose. (So now we know that the marketplace both ruins the fun of the game in the long run and scams people if they don’t know what to buy or stay away from.)

I understand that the staff still needs to make a profit from people, and in order to fix all these problems, well.. They might be taking out quite a bit of income. So I doubt this will ever change.

As of now, me and my friends are really bored of the game and it’s only been a month or two… (And I thought paying 15 dollars a month for MMORPG’s was expensive, hehe. I understand it’s my fault for spending money, but please bare with me.) The reason we got bored of the game is mainly because of the repetitiveness of it. Killing the same 3 factions, doing the same stages, and the same missions over and over. With this game still being beta I can understand that more content is coming. In that regard I can still play the game because I love collecting stuff and trying out different things. My goals for the game are to level all the weapons to 30, all the warframes, get all the scans for my codex, etc. I love endgame, I enjoy perfection, and I‘m sure many people feel the same. It is also my goal to get 1 of every mod maxed. But wait.. There are mods that you could only get once, and are never coming back? Well.. That’s really crappy, oh well, I guess there goes 800 platinum for the two event’s mods, and another 3500 for the charged chamber mod (assuming I want all mods maxed without being ocd)

Alright so now we’re caught up with mods. But wait, There’s exclusive weapons too?! AND an exclusive warframe?! So what you are saying is, I will never be able to have everything perfect because of this; oh, and some of these exclusive weapons and mods are the best you can get in game. So no matter what, I will never be as strong as someone that played this game earlier. That’s nice. I feel inspired to continue playing for sure. But Warframe already got my money, why should they care?

Don’t get me wrong, exclusive stuff is cool, having something that others’ don’t have? Feels nice. But having exclusive warframes, weapons, and mods is just ruining the game for people. Mods aren’t so bad because you can trade them, but it still really sucks for weapons and warframes, especially if a weapon is the strongest in game. It’s severely unfair and I could see it hurting the game more than doing good.

Another reason we can’t find the inspiration to play Warframe anymore is because it lacks purpose; there isn’t really an end game, and there’s nothing to strive for or work towards other than warframes and weapons.

Conclave rating: From the times I have done pvp, I find that the conclave rating doesn’t help at all, all it has done for me and my friends is make pvp a pain in the &#! as we all struggle to reach the same rating range. Yet it never matters what rating you have when people have weapons that one-hit kill you anyway. I could have a rating of 700 and still dominate someone with a 1500 rating. I would definitely change pvp so that everyone passively takes 50% less damage or something to make pvp less of a one-hit KO.

Most annoying bug ever for people that spend a lot of time to look pretty, ahem, arsenal sometimes resets when you enter a party.

Some warframes, weapons, and Syandana pieces have serious clipping issues. As much as I like Jat Kittag going through my skull or weapons floating at my sides…

A couple suggestions:

Fashion. I’m not really a huge fashion person myself, but I know there are people who love looking awesome while they play. From all the games I have played, I would say Dota 2 has the best system for skins. (For those that don’t know, Dota 2 uses articles of equipment: shoulders, gloves, boot, helm, etc that you can mix and match per character. You purchase all skins from dota, and you can buy/sell them to other people on the steam market) I know quite a few people that would pay lots of money just for skins on warframe, and this system would be a nice source of income for the warframe developers, as it’s not terribly hard to create textures.

I personally love playing with statistics of warframes, abilities, and weapons.. However the game is limited in the information is gives. I for one wouldn’t mind more information on stats.

I’m not going to get into detail, but I strongly think that a lot of the warframes and weapons need to be balanced. It also bugs me that some of the strongest weapons like Stug you can make in twelve hours where say a weaker weapon like Glaive Prime takes a bunch of farming and time to make.

It irritated me that with some weapons, I could kill a boss just as easy as an enemy a couple levels higher. I think they need more challenging mechanics that make them harder no matter how overpowered your weapon or warframe is.

This is all I can think of for now, if I have anything important to mention i'll add it. Thank you for reading!

Sounds like you should have spent more time playing the game instead of buying the weapons/frames to me, and now you are bored because you have them all.

At least that is what that wall of text looks like to me

Micro-transactions add up if you aren't careful. That's literally how free 2 play companies make their money.

The money is spent now though and a good lesson learned from it.

Just remember the lesson when it comes to your next game experience.

For my part, after I leave this game I'll be steering clear of Free 2 plays altogether.

This is my 3rd one and only one of them has had a decent experience or community thus far.

Warframe is a good game. That said, it can be an exercise in frustration if played as your primary or only game. it doesn't have the needed depth or balance to make it challenging enough to engage long term.

Think of it as a good "sometimes" game.

If you are into MMO's look at FFXIV who's community has started to stabilize, ESO is a fairly new title and growing fast, GW2 is an older title but still offers a solid game with a living story,  or Wildstar, which has a mix of old and new coupled with a Ratchet and Clank feel, when it comes out in a couple of months.

Nosgoth is a team based pvp game in beta that's set in the Legacy of Kain universe and published by Square Enix. It's a free 2 play as well.

I haven't played it, but it looks interesting. I am going to pass on that one personally because I am burning out on Free 2 plays

If you plan to continue on the path of the Mirco-transaction games though... Make sure they earn every penny they get from you before you give it to them. That's what my last 2 Founders experiences have taught me.

"glaive prime" "weak"?? Excuse me sir but you have not the proper mods yet :P

I currently do 2000 to everything with just my glaive, havent even forma'd, it's a great weapon! plus melee 2.0 and more shiny things on Wednesday to make melee weapons even stronger :)

@ Hawksluckyeyes Every weapon in this game can be powerful with the right mods, but there are always the more powerful weapons.

@Padre I am actually playing eso now, it's replacing WoW for a while. And yeah, i don't play many f2p games, but i play a lot of other games and know how they are fun.

Like I said, I understand a lot of Warframe now and how it works, but when I didn't know it was a problem. On another note, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on games if I couldn't afford it, I've probably spend over 1000 dollars on league now lol

Also don't even bother replying to this thread if you are just going to be an ignorant kid that wants to rage at me for long threads, wasting your time, etc, being mad that I don't understand something. I don't care, this thread isn't for the community, it's for the devs, it's feedback on me and my friends experience, and what we thought. Thank you.

OP, yeah I know that feeling, thats why I only bought stuff that was stupidly hard to get and required lots of grind and waiting, like Banshee and some rare mods, I tried to get everythiong you can get by playing.

Thats why games should never have everything for sale and thats why prime trading was a bad idea - it only hurts the game in the long run, as quick gratification ends quickly and you are left with nothing  to do.

I hope you still had fun, and if you can easily spend 200$+ on a game you are obviously wealthy enough to afford it. There is no 'endgame' whatsoever, but Warframe is still hundreds of hours of fun.

But remember, if you buy it you will be bored. The game is about earning it.

Idk if anyone else feels like me, but if you can afford to buy it, and it's right there for taking.. earning it doesn't seem worth my time. Why put effort into something you can get in a couple seconds and start having fun with instantly.

Keep in mind, purchasing stuff and getting bored isn't even a big problem really, just a drawback. What bothers me more than anything and is the underlying reason that I don't want to play anymore, is exclusive items. I can get rather OCD, I -am- a completionist, and I see no point in farming for and trying out everything if i can't get everything. Always having that 90% completion in my codex -will- bother me to the point where it's not worth my time to even get there. I think this game does need something to strive for, some sort of end game, and the closest 'endgame' they have is completing your codex. (which you can't do unless you were here from the start)

I feel the opposite way, especially given that Warframe's entire metagame is about obtaining gear. For many players, the fun IS the unlocking and earning.

I won't value the items as much if I spend $5 versus spend 5 hours.

Having said that, I'm not a completionist. I'm an optimizer. So, maybe that's a difference. I don't want it all - I want to find the best ways to use what's out there.

I can understand buying something if the effort it takes to get an item is higher than you consider worth it (and don't feel the same way about the money).  In some cases, if you want it now (rather than waiting 6 days to do all the research).  And of course you might have just started and want a different frame or whatever.

But in general, the game itself should be fun, and so obtaining most items within the game itself should be fun.  Plus I find that if I remove having a goal like getting item X from the equation, I often wind up rudderless, less inclined to do things.

Excalibur Prime is surely not the strongest frame in the game. Snipetron Vandal is not the most powerful gun in the game.

I don't know what your problem is.

Oh wait, I do! You're a completionist. Just let it go and stop letting it control your consumer behaviour.

There is absolutely no need to have everything.

I don't have Lato Prime or Braton Vandal or Primed Chamber. And I feel perfectly fine about it.

I have spent maybe twenty bucks give or take on the game.  I like to grind out the weapons and frames because I want to test drive them.  I suppose I might spend more money if I could try out the stuff first before I buy.  This need to try out has kept me from spending lots of cash.   But I say to you. Forget about it.  When you divide the money you spent by the hours played you will have ended up spending less than you do to go to a movie.  Except in warframe you get to be in the movie with your friends.  So, forget about it.

I do think they have some issues with the end game.  I have been playing less time than you but really there is not a lot of incentive for me to play now.  I just dont see the need for a Frost Prime when my frost can pretty much do as well, in fact better given he has re-polarized, much less a rhino.  I kill plenty effectively with the weapons I currently own.  And of course there is no new content... so.  I am happy with what I got out of it.  Maybe I will get more.

posting a lot in the forums is the stage just before walking away from the game.

i spent 950, been playing for 9 months, still loving it. however i did have to take a two week break once or twice.  everything gets boring if you have everything man.

Yep.  Take some time off from the game and come back when you want to play.  If any game starts to feel like a job you should be playing something else.  I'm pretty sure quite a few top tier players are biding their time until the next content infusion comes around.  I would probably be doing that myself if I wasn't working on getting my toys ready for Melee 2.0.

There's nothing wrong with Glaive Prime.  It's one of my favorite melee weapons.  I've forma'd it twice and I crit some grineer in the face for about 7.5k.  It's all in the mods you pick.  Stack that charge damage and charge speed, it's the best thing you can do with the glaive at present.  The main reason the damage is low is because it's ranged, and you can throw it and reload while it comes back.  I find the utility-for-damage trade-off to be well worth it.  If for no other reason than hitting things in the face is really fun.

The Stug is a great weapon also.  I don't use it because I tend to blow myself up.

As was said above, don't worry about the exclusive items that came out before you started playing the game.  They're far from the best items in the game.  I wish I had Snipetron, Excal Prime and Primed chamber myself, but since I don't I'll be waiting and preparing myself so that in the event that they come back, I can make sure I get them.

We're getting a HUGE update this coming Tuesday/Wednesday.  Take some time off if you want, and come back and play with the reworked melee system and all the new toys that are coming with it.

Well atleast you learnt your lesson, i got the lowest tier founders pack and used my plat for weapon/warframe slots. It sucks that you spent so much money but on the other hand you have learnt a lesson that will make you enjoy future f2p games more.
