FinnishHim
So I looked and I didn't find a lore-specific section of the forums so I guess this is going here. What exactly are the Tenno and warframes? The Tenno are... humans? That were highly trained and put into cryostasis? Orokin? My biggest question: Where do the warframes come from? Equipped already on the cryostasis'd Tenno from the time of the Orokin? Or are they like... found by the Tenno in the Void? Or what...Additionally are there multiples of the same warframe or what? For example, is it sound with the lore to have four Excaliburs in a match together? But then... what about Valkyr? Did the Corpus mass-torture like thousands of Tenno in the same suit? It seems like Valkyr's story is pretty exclusive. Are warframes made in the time period of the game or are they all from the time of the Orokin? Ex. can the Tenno craft new warframes NOW from scratch, without needing to have one from before (ie make an original warframe)? Then, what are primes? Warframes that were exposed to the Void and "Primed?" Then wouldn't all normal warframes have to not be from the Orokin time period? O_o So many questions. I would appreciate all answers, since I want to be as informed as possible before I go writing fanfic or lore for warframe concepts in other sections in the forums! Thanks! -FinnishHim Edit: My questions were answered and thanks to you guys I was able to think of and create this Lore story for my Hacker warframe concept. Thanks so much to all you guys for your help. It began as a faded memory. A shadow of a thought, reminiscent of the Old War. Suspended in time, locked away just as the Tenno had been for centuries past. But as time passed, one awoken Tenno, in this new era of warring empires bent on domination and profit, discovered the depths of the dark space that was its mind. An image. A brilliant light, enveloping bolts of energy seeking to extinguish it. But then, another image. Machines of war turning on their masters, driven by a will not their own. Yet the Tenno, as it became a component of this new universe more and more, grew a sense of longing. Missing. An entity, but it did not know what. Time heralded more visions, each more vivid than the last, yet each only contributing to the sense of loss that festered inside the Tenno. Orokin cringing in pain, their own technology bringing them to their knees. Waves of their own creations gathering around the shining light, submitting themselves to its devices. But again, the sense of loss only expanded in the Tenno. Time did not heal it, and the memories did not relieve the pain. The pain of its shattered mind. The Tenno, driven to the edge of its sanity, fled from its brethren, fled from its Lotus. A fallen warrior, cursed to wander space, searching for the fragments of what it once was. Until the final revelation came. There had been a beginning, when it was created. The Orokin masters had brought the Tenno, contained within the armor that kept it alive, to their last experiment. A room, with only one pillar standing in the center of all its golden walls and pearl windows. The Tenno, reliving the memory, filled with a feeling of belonging at the sight of the pillar, for the Tenno now remembered what came next. They had brought the Tenno to the pillar, raising its hand to touch its surface... The tower shined, disintegrating into nothingness and the Tenno fell to the floor. Two minds, no longer anchored to their physical form. Moments felt like eons as they passed, but then the two met each other. And one was created. The Tenno rose, its armor now pulsing with energy as the lights flickered for only a split second. Outside, the sound of firing laser barrels rang out, and in response screams cried for help. But, the Orokin masters only smiled in accomplishment. Their experiment, had succeeded. All memories then arranged themselves like sequence in a code, and the Tenno was drawn to the stars. Time blurred together as the lone Tenno’s ship set off. It was like returning home, after years away, when the Tenno reached its calling. A derelict ship, from the era of its old masters. Driven by an unstoppable will seeking its peace of mind, the infested that dwelt there were ended by gun and blade. At long last, after hours of navigating the forgotten corridors of the ship, the Tenno stood before a single room. The door hung halfway open, inviting the warrior inside. Therein the Tenno found a familiar, luminescent pillar, the manifestation of its hope. A swift swipe of an ancient control console yielded the Tenno’s prize. A small, levitating artifact slide out from its prison, and the Tenno slowly reached out to it in wonder and anticipation, as a child would to a gift. Upon its touch, the artifact evaporated from the air itself, and the room fell dim. Yet the Tenno was reunited. The warrior kneeled down, resolved at last. It was no longer alone. It was one, once again. Suddenly, a weathered exterior ship camera brought a vision forth to the Tenno. It appeared to be another of the Lotus’ vessels, headed directly for the derelict. The Tenno turned its head, as if listening for a distant sound, and overheard comm-chatter. It was the Lotus, herself. “... stopped here. . . appears to have boarded-Wait! I’m detecting an active neural sentry! Prepare yourselves! … ” The Tenno walked calmly to the projected boarding site. Halfway there, other Tenno clad in warframes encountered it and all of them stood still. The others nodded understandingly as the wanderer gave them a peaceful, resolute stare. They were brothers and sisters in arms again. At that moment, the Lotus, in the spacecraft’s command room, received an encrypted Orokin transmission. Before it had decoded, the Tenno returned with their lost family member. Yet as soon as the Lotus met its gaze, a notification sounded from the command console. The message had been decrypted. As she read the three words projected on the room’s primary hologram panel, she understood. “We are Enigma.” If you want to read the whole concept, it can be found here Edited April 7, 2014 by FinnishHim
Xirka
All of this, is actually rather difficult to answer. We don't know much
Orbister
Well, i bet my kidneys that not even DE can answer all of that, because we have very little information and what we have tends to be not only vague but contradictory, as the game is being developed as we play i guess that we will have a canon when everything "settles". CaptainPeanut
So far as I know: Tenno were once human, but altered by the Void, whatever that means. Warframes are just suits that are crafted by the Tenno to wear. This flows into the next point. I'm pretty sure DE has confirmed that the player is a single Tenno, and we just use different Warframes. I guess this means we're now some kind of amorphous, genderless being that can be in any suit. 'Prime' weapons and Warframes are the 'original' versions of said gear. Created by the Orokin in the Orokin era. All current gear are the attempt of the current factions, mainly Tenno, at recreating the originals. That's all I got.

Llyssa
1. We don't know for 100% certainty, but we appear to be a type of infested. There are two types of infested. One, the kind we kill, is driven insane with pain, and they destroy their physical form as the infestation consumes them and fuses anything they wore into their being. We are a second type, with congenital analgesia--we feel no pain, so rather than flailing and destroying our bodies, we learn to start controlling the energy it creates in our bodies. Our suits(warframes), which, logically, would fuse with us as we wear them, help augment and control it, channeling the power into the abilities we use, rather than letting it destroy us. This fits with the base explanations of warframes from Dark Sector, the prequel to this game. 2. It appears that, despite our lack of being mindless pain-driven monsters, someone saw fit to quarantine our infestation in the void. The orokin apparently reclaimed us from the void, and gave us the suits that we've fused into. They didn't design the suits, merely re-used ancient technology, with their own personal upgrades. 3. We are not few in number. The fact that there are prime variants, clans, and that you can have 4 tenno in a single mission all decry against this. The Alad V saga depicts that he tore apart many, many tenno in his frankenstein creation, as it's not easy to control our powers. If there aren't more than a single tenno of each type of suit, then, canonically, excalibur is dead, re: "The Profit". Likewise, it would make no sense that we craft the suits from parts we find. There are types of tenno, each augmented with a different brand of suit. Valkyr is the scraps from a particular sub-set of tenno that happened to be mutilated but not destroyed in the process of Alad's research--think about it like finding banana peels. Banana peels all look alike, despite them being the discarded part of a fruit that has been used otherwise. That's what's left of Valkyr--she's the banana peel that's left once you cut out the parts useful for zanuka making. 4. All warframes are made from existing technology, which, in turn, was claimed from orokin ruins. As noted before, there are many users of similar suits, and "prime" variants appear to have been specially augmented. It's been claimed by the stalker that there were various ranks of soldiers within the orokin army, so we can suppose that "standard" variants are general soldiers, whilst "prime" versions would have been the officers and upper echelon troops. Above all, it's noteworthy that they want to purposely keep things vague because it allows each player personal interpretations. If you want to believe we'd actually be some of the fanart suits-with-sexy-faces-beneath-the-helm, you can. If you want to believe we're horribly deformed beasts just barely in control of the powers that leak out of us when we stand idle, you can. If you think we're tiny people controlling giant robo-armors to battle 60 foot tall monstrosities, you can.
dyrak55d
Primes was originally made by Orokin, that is why you can find them only in the Void Normal Warframes and weps can be built by you and other Tenno, they are copied counterparts of the Primes Warframes and Weapons
Apochron
Here's what I've reasoned out so far, from the various event messages. At some point in the past, the Orokin created the Technocyte Virus in an attempt to kill "The Sentients" [taken directly from an event message]. The virus targeted humans and animals as well, mutating them into Infested [see: J3 Golem/Phorid taunts]. The Orokin evacuated some infected people into the Void as a sort of quarantine. Towards the end of the Orokin-Sentient war, the Orokin re-opened the Void and found that their quarantined humans were still alive, and had gained sick nasty elemental powers from exposure to the Void energy- these were the first Tenno. The Orokin build the first Warframes, the Prime series, as a way to both physically contain the void/infested humans [who were literally falling apart] and also focus their powers [see: Excalibur Codex]. And now for headcanon: As Tenno are recovered from cryosleep, new frames are built for them from modern materials. These frames are basically replicas of the Orokin originals. Therefore, it is possible for there to be multiple Excaliburs or Volts, because those names refer to their Warframe model- not the identity of the Tenno inside. Each pilot only controls one Tenno. Because their bodies are physically unstable [see: Infested Ancients' stretching], they can alter themselves to fit into various shapes.
Xaelon
I think it was Devstream 25 where DE talked about what the Warframes are. DE is being intentionally vague about the beings that wield the warframes. It sounded like more information about this will be revealed in time. It is understood that the warframes were originally of Orokin creation to assist them in a war against what is called "The Sentient". It is also said that the Orokin created those who wield Warframes by talking lifeforms and casting them into the void and then building warframes around these beings as a "channel for their affliction". There are some lore tidbits in the codex. I know that Excal Prime and Ember Prime both have lore entries. Also go read the Stalkers Lore entry too. It's pretty interesting as it speaks of how the Warframes (supposedly?) betrayed the Orokin. You're not the only one who's in the dark about this. The best thing to do is to read the codex in game and see what you think about all of it. If you'd like my two cents continue reading. Here's what I think: (I don't have any evidence to support this, so take it as you will.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I assume that those who are able to retain their minds after being exposed to the void and the technocite plague are who pilot the warframes. Those who lose their minds become what we know as the infested. As for why there are multiple warframes, would be because warframes are equipment. Just like guns or swords. Provided you have the parts and the correct tools you're able to manufacturer them (we can do so because we have the assistance of the Lotus). I would assume that there's an original frame of each type, which brings us to your question about Primes. Primes appear to be artifacts of orokin make and also likely serve as the 'principle forge' or template for existing gear. Prime gear is more powerful than it's current version is because they're closer to the original Orokin version of that item. Probably because the Lotus doesn't have the means to exactly reproduce Orokin tech. I would assume that the Lotus is able to allow us to craft more warframes because she was able to derive some of the tech from prime gear that was discovered. That or she has access to Orokin technology archives.
Lorane_Airwing
At least as far as i understand: Tenno are humans infected by the technocyte plauge, they have also been exposed to the voids full affects with no shielding. We have been on corpus ships in the void before and the void is not nice to anything besides orokin ships due to their technology. From what i understand warframes are built around a tenno. Which is why we can have different frames. It also seems Tenno no longer have a gender per say and simply use the shape of the frame they are in. It is POSSIBLE and likely a theory that the frames design is only of the original frames owner; For example the excaliber frame is based off of the one created/formed by hayden tenno in darksector. All excalibers afterwards simply "copying" that design. As said above. It is likely there was one valkyr, of course she was a different frame before her corpus encounter. however her new modified frame can be created with blueprints. Though as for her tortured screams i am not 100% sure on this theory. As warframes and tenno seem to be a mixed bag of who is who and who is in what. Nova was created post-orokin era, as such her frame may never have a prime varient? I am unsure on this. However i know she was made after the orokin era.Primes are frames made with orokin components, much like tenno weapons. They are similar blue prints but use different materials in their construction. Exchanging ferrite for rubido for instance. They are the "original" orokin designs, current weapons and frames are attempt to replicate that with common materials.
DrakeWing
Based on the current lore (this is somewhat my own impressions): -Tenno are (were) the elite warrior-caste of the Orokin era. They are humans exposed to the raw energies of the void, and use warframes as conduits to direct and amplify their abilities. -Warframes are manufactured by the Tenno, using designs they've either developed on their own or scavenged from Orokin ruins. They aren't exclusive to one individual and Tenno can probably use different warframes fairly easily. -On Valkyr specifically, the Valkyr we create in-game is most likely a mass-produced version reverse engineered based on Alad V's "modifications" to the original Tenno wearing whatever frame became Valkyr. -The Tenno actively research new weapons and warframes (Nova and Zephyr are two such examples). "Prime" equipment, including Prime warframes, are recreations of the original Orokin era designs created using parts and schematics obtained in Orokin towers and derelicts. Hope this helps! Llyssa
Oh, a sub point: We're definitely not orokin, they considered us a type of tool/weapon. We clearly weren't a part of their society, and based on the various orokin ruins we can access, probably aren't even the same species--their construction aesthetics don't make any sense to us, and our ability to access them seems like an after-thought. We may have been kidnapped by them. We also appear to have cleansed them from creation, so we weren't on very good terms with them.

I feel like I just got like seven simultaneous insight-bombs dropped on me XD Really though I seriously appreciate it everyone. I have a much better understanding now. To me personally, it now seems that: Tenno are from the Orokin Era. Not necessarily Orokin, however. Exposed to technocyte virus and the Void, making them beings that are remarkably powerful but also scarred and forever changed. Tenno fought the Orokin at some point, for the attrocities committed against them. Tenno were put into cryostasis and are now trying to save the solar system from the enemies of the present (in relation to the Orokin era) day. Warframes were made to keep the Tenno stable and channel their power. Primes were the original, Orokin versions, blueprints for which are found only in the Orokin Void Derelicts and Towers. "Normal" warframes are just Tenno-crafted iterations of the Prime versions, which are not as powerful due to the lack of Orokin technology, basically. So why are Tenno found in cryostasis in non-Prime gear? Maybe they crafted their own warframes behind the Orokin's back and used them to combat the Orokin?? [*]Tenno may be able to shapeshift, in a sense, to fit the warframe they have equipped. My Mag and my Oberon are the same Tenno. This is made possible by the technocyte virus's effect on them. [*]All warframes aside from the original are just copies, used by individual Tenno, as made possible by blueprints (it makes a lot more sense now!). Likewise, Prime blueprints show Tenno how to make Prime warframes for themselves, otherwise Tenno would be restricted to only making attempts at the Prime originals made by the Orokin. "Valkyr" was a Tenno who was tortured and had her warframe modified by the Corpus, and all subsequent "Valkyrs" are crafted from blueprints of the original "Valkyr." But the screaming and such is just customary :P Sentients were the reason why the Orokin resorted to creating Tenno and warframes and the technocyte virus, because they were at war with them. The infested are essentially the brethren of Tenno, but are insane and malformed because of they didn't possess warframes and couldn't handle the pain This explains why the Tenno are so disciplined. They had to be, to avoid the fate of the infested, as we know them. [*]It all makes so much sense now oh my Lotus XD hahaha Thanks so much everyone! I really just. I can't even say X) my questions were all answered, really. I feel totally prepared to write fanfic or lore for concepts now. Thanks so much, again! -FinnishHim P.S. Now... whaddup with the Lotus?? :P Just kidding.

unknow99
You even wouldn't have been asking these questions if DE had already brought some stor....Hm hm sorry. :p Hopefully, Vor's prize is coming soon. Hopefully not the usual "soon"...
SilentMobius
"Valkyr" was a Tenno who was tortured and had her warframe modified by the Corpus, and all subsequent "Valkyrs" are crafted from blueprints of the original "Valkyr." But the screaming and such is just customary :P Something to think about: The Warframe are what we slot mods in to make the powers usable, even if the _source_ of that power comes from the Void exposure of the Tenno, certain powers are only available in certain Warframes. * If all Warframes of a given line were based on a single unique Prime frame made for a "progenitor" Tenno who expressed those powers without help.... * Then maybe they carry more that just the powers and shape of the progenitor Tenno: maybe they carry a little of the personality * This would explain the Valkyr situation, The story-Valkyr Pilot was tortured, manifested new Void-powers under duress and those bled into her damaged Warframe, which we then built ours from. * To use the powers you need to gain "affinity" with the progenitor through their echo in the Warframe, this also explains what DE describe Warframes in terms normally reserved for a beings personality
