its completely random. you throw in 4 of ANYTHING and you get 1 random one from the giant chest of all mods.

I haven't done nearly enough transmutations to know, but everyone tells me it's mostly rarity and function. Function as in, Warframe powers are likely to net you another Warframe power.

I wouldn't say completely random, using rarer mods does have a higher chance to yield another rare mod from my experience. But for the most part it is fairly random; you shouldn't expect to always get something of equal value even if you invest only rare mods, and using mods of a similar weapon type or polarity doesn't always rewards you with a matching mod.

 

My advice is only bother with Rare and Uncommon mods you don't really need (ie. spare Warframe ability cards), using Commons is never worth it.

Using 4 rare mods guarantees a rare back, but they have to be 4 different rares.

While using 4 rares isn't a guarentee, it will give back a rare most of the time. Not totally sure, but I believe using 4 different rares increases that probability some more.

 

Using 4 mods of the same polarity increase the probability of getting a mod of the same polarity. At also seems that using 4 different mods of one polarity increase that probability a bit more. Even so, the chance of getting a same-polarity mod Is significantly lower than getting a rare from 4 rares.

 

In the end though, it basically comes to throwing millions of credits and hundreds of mods at the wall and hoping you get what you want.

 

On the upside, I've gotten 2 stance mods through transmutation in the last couple days, one being rare, so it does work... eventually.
