[Solved] Warframe : The Pay2Play Experience

Question

Posted (edited)

Hi everyone,

My point is simple, I really dislike F2P model. I miss the time when you paid for a game once and played it : no subscription, no DLC, no "platinum/gold coins/whatever in-game real money". I don't mean I want to play for free, I mean I don't want to pay to keep playing. So my question is : is there a way to pay a fair amount of cash ONCE and not be "stuck" in this game ?

I've been playing Warframe for about 20h, maxed out the starting Warframe and all equipment, built a Sentinel and my Oberon will be ready to fight in about 30h. I've also built a Latron and a Viper.

So my problem right now is that my slots are almost depleted, which means I'm "stuck". My "demo" of the game is over, I need to spend cash (no problem with that), but I'd like to anticipate how much.

I don't think I'll build all Warframes and weapons, from the videos I've seen I'd say I'd like to try about 10 of the warframes. And I guess about 20 weapons. So to get all these slots, considering the cash price of a slot, it will already be quite expensive.

My fear is that I stumble later on other bad surprises like this and have to pay to continue playing (like getting access to a certain planet, or a particular warframe). Are warframe/weapon slots the only limitation that requires spending money ?

Thanks for your advice

Even if they make it so some planets require platinum to access it, getting platinum is not the hardest thing in the world to do, running a few void keys will get you some Prime parts, and trust me no matter then part, someone will buy it for at least 5 platinum. Considering you get a key every 15 minute runs in the void, if you try hard enough you can make enough platinum to do pretty much anything you want. I've bought several color pallets just on vending stuff myself.

Basicly yes.

You can have access to anything in game, the only thing that limits you is the slots you have available. If you know how many slots you will need buy them and you wouldn't have the need of another thing bought by plat.

Sell things over trade via the dojo trading posts, get platinum, and get rid of gear you don't need to keep. You also gain slots every few mastery levels.

in answer to your question the only 2 things in game that cannot be obtained without platinum are slots and cosmetic upgrades and platinum can be obtained through the in game trading system if you put in the work to obtain goods worthwhile enough to sell

I don't actually know how to respond to you... I mean, I guess you could wait for a new event which will probably award you with a free weapon after its done, or you could trade with somebody and get plat (but the process is long and painful, well for me it is)... and I guess thats all.

Good luck if you're gonna try to get some plat in trading, you're gonna need it.

well you are not stuck if you just sell your items and get more, technically. But if you want a varity they you have to pay or trade. So far I have spent $30 on this game (before they added trading) after trading I have not spent anything.

As others have said, trade some mods and stuff for plat, also, if you are tight on slots, sell the weapons and frames you don't plan to use again.

Also, this is an online game that is continually being updated, the model of pay once at the start doesn't really work because the developers are still working on the game, and plan to continue working on it for a fairly long time to come.

There are still games that are pay once and get the game, sure some companies are also doing paid DLC, but thats them being greedy.

Given the breadth of content already present in the game and the looming implication that this isn't half of what there will be at the end, it's nigh impossible to pin down exactly how many slots of each kind you'll need. If you don't have the heart to sell weapons or warframes, you will need a lot, and I mean a lot, of platinum to compensate. If you can deal with letting something go if you weren't crazy about it, you could probably buy a typical game's retail price in platinum and buy enough slots to tide you over.

Yes I've heard about trading but I don't think people will pay for a Braton or a Lato, even if its level 30. I guess only rare items are worthy of platinum. And I like to keep my rare items :)

Sorry if I wasn't clear, english is not my native language. The question is not about spending money, developers need to eat (and servers need electricity). The question is about how many aspects of the game requires spending platinum ?

You can't trade weapons anyways.

You can get every single item in the game (except for cosmetics and slots) for free.

So really, unless you want to take shortcuts, all you need is slots.

Thanks for your answers, I don't think I made myself clear to everyone (I'm OK to pay for a game doesn't mean I want a P2W) but some answers were really helpful :)

I'll buy some platinum to get more slots (and support DE) and give the trade system a try

Outside of inventory slots and purely-cosmetic things (like color palettes), everything else can be acquired without plat.  I am rank 11/15 (16 is not obtainable for new players right now) and I have almost every warframe and have ranked up tons of weapons.  None of them were bought with plat, all were built from prints/parts.

You can't trade normal blueprints or created/built weapons/frames.

Only prime parts and some blueprints (mostly prime stuff).

Warframe slots are 20p each.

Weapon slots are 12p for 2 at a time.

Sentinel slots are 12p for 2 at a time.

There's 22 still-obtainable Warframes.

There's 135 still-obtainable obtainable weapons.

There's 6 sentinels.

440 + 816 + 36 = 1,292 plat needed if you wanted to expand your inventory large enough to hold every currently-obtainable weapon, frame, and blueprint at the same time.  $50, about the price of some high-end games, nets you 1000 plat right now.

But there's two things to consider.

1 - One of the login rewards is a plat discount.  I have personally gotten the 20% and 50% ones within the past few weeks, so I know they're in rotation.  They also do plat discounts for some special occasions, and I've heard of 75% off rarely too.

2 - Most people don't buy all that inventory space and will make do with up to like half the space at max because they'll sell off low-end weapons, and not keep around the single version of pistols alongside the dual versions, etc.
