Desktop links are just shortcuts to steam with an appid that represents the title, if the appid is for a game that is not installed steam will attempt to download it. If the game is not listed in steams library you will have to download it again.

As to why it keeps disappearing there are a number of reasons, do you have steam installed in a custom location, such as a removable drive, or have you created any symbolic links or junctions on your pc. Are you using a guest or other non admin account that doesn't have permission to change the contents of folders resulting in steams manifest not being updated?

It has been a long day, on reflection, if it were an account permission issue you would not be able to install the game, however, corrupt security permissions on particular folders could cause problems.

Steam is installed in the default location. im using the Admin account. im positive that i don't have a corrupt security file. this issue is very annoying.. for now i'll be using the non-steam version
