DE_Adam Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 While Part One of our Devstream 30 Overview covered a lot of the Infested faction, that certainly wasn’t all that was talked about! The Grineer and Corpus both saw a little extra love, with updated bosses new and old in development to break up the usual approach to boss encounters. Keep in mind that everything shown is still in development, and while that shouldn’t keep you from hanging onto the edge of your seat in excitement it’s good to know that things may still change down the line. With that said lets hop into the first of our Grineer reveals... The infamous Grineer geneticist is the one of the existing bosses that will be seeing a major update, taking full advantage of the changes that have come with Melee 2.0. Able to shift between a sword and his own augmented fists Tyl Regor will be a boss that should challenge players looking to test their skills in melee against a boss that’ll return every blade thrust with one in kind. Though Tyl was the first boss we revealed on the Devstream he’s certainly not the last, and there’s been a lot of talk on how best to go about designing enemy encounters. Bosses that once were simply buffed enemies are slowly being elaborated into more complex encounters, and with that there has been some talk in improving the enemy pool for regular missions as well; with some enemy ideas potentially working better as mini bosses than a full-on boss encounter. When it comes to more normal enemy concepts the Beastmaster is looking to be a fine example of the how well the Grineer military complex adapts to their environments; with this particular enemy having caught and tamed the Kubrow for their own needs. The Beastmaster and Kurbrow work in tandem with one another, a combination of the Kurbows powerful jaws and Grineer ranged firepower make the pair complement each other naturally. The Beastmaster could also have the unique ability to disarm Tenno, stealing their primary weapon and using it against them in the heat of battle. Mixing a familiar face with a figure of legend amongst the Warframe community our Devs were proud to reveal the return of Nef and his nephew Derf, both of whom will be fighting side-by-side when their encounter is eventually updated. Much of the reason behind the redesign (and inclusion of Derf) came from experimentation in boss encounters, wanting to keep players moving and reacting to the fight more than sitting back and laying down a hailstorm of firepower. Nef’s contribution to the fight would consist of riding in his hover chair, attacking players in a way that forces them to move and pick at his defenses until a weakness finally reveals itself. Teamwork will be key, and once you figure out his weakness...well...that’s where Derf comes in. Derf Anyo is a little more reckless than Nef, riding a hoverboard as opposed to his uncle’s heavily armored chair; and though what exactly triggers his entry into the encounter is still a secret our approach to any multi-stage boss encounter will remain the same. Phases will be evident but fluid, easy to follow without breaking away from immersion in the moment. As a fan inspired enemy (more specifically created by forum member MyHeroPatrickSwayze) we want to stay as true to the spirit of Derf’s more lighthearted comedic nature while at the same time grounding him as a member of the Corpus. While there may still be a long way to go, it’s our goal to have every boss reflective of this more interactive design philosophy. That every boss fight is different and memorable in their own fashion. Each one can be their own spectacle, or epic moment. No real details can be given on how soon these changes will come, but our plan is to have new bosses interspersed between existing ones. While there were plenty of other subjects discussed on Corpus, Grineer and Infested enemies one topic that unified all three factions was Notionphil’s extensive forum post looking at smart vs dumb AI and how well it resonated with many of the changes to come for Warframe. Leaving enemies ‘dumb’ but dangerous gives players that feeling of empowerment when facing a large group, but it’s being able to overcome the AI’s incidental teamwork that make encounters so much fun. Like the J3 Golem, Derf, Puss Ancient and Nanite MOA the enemies that we’ll be gradually introducing into the game are going to be far more unique, requiring players to react in more than just a wait-and-see approach. The goal is to create enemies that are both challenging and memorable in nature, and to that effect we’re quite excited for what’s in store for you all in the near future.

RahuHordika Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 (edited) Derf is Nef's son, not his nephew, get it right guys. (Otherwise things are looking interesting) Edited June 17, 2014 by RahuStalker
OniDarkClown Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 So much fun when the time comes to do battle with these guys. gonna be a good looking butt whoopin.
Paradoxbomb Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 (edited) Derf Anyo reminds me of the Noise Tanks from JSRF. I have no issue with this. Anyway, can't wait to see these guys make it in game (hopefully not too far from now). Edited June 17, 2014 by Paradoxbomb

Casardis Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 (edited) Thank you Adam! I'm really excited to see more of Tyl Regor especially. Thanks for sharing all of this! I do have a little thing I'd like to ask you, though it's more of a food-for-thought kind of deal. During the Devstream 30, Rebecca asked the question on how you guys, responsible for designing bosses and enemies, should tackle the issue of enemies that can't be melee'ed, or almost can't, such as Vay Hek and Lephantis. From your response, it showed (to me at least) that Melee 2.0 seems to be limiting you guys in creativity, instead of expanding on it, leading to Tyl Regor's design. The way I see it, it seems that you guys have to try to accommodate to the currently limited melee 2.0 system (which in my opinion still leaves a lot to be improved in its core), and therefore limiting how you guys design enemies that can be fought. I don't think we really have any new bosses designed to be fought effectively and creatively with both firewarms and melee; it's mostly really hard with melee and a breeze with firearms. Due to that, while I'm VERY excited for Tyl Regor, I feel that he's just there to ease the pain temporarily on how Melee 2.0 is seemingly lacking in depth. Having Tyl Regor designed around Melee 2.0 won't make melee more viable for other bosses, from what I see. Even the new Vor isn't made for melee due to his strange hitbox, limiting your melee arsenal and stances (only certain ones can actually hit him). In conclusion, I feel that the current stage of Melee 2.0 limits the enemy designers. If melee actually got a focus by the devs to polish things and add missing core elements, I believe doing so would allow more responsive gameplay from the players, while allowing the devs/designers to go even more creatively with the enemies without feeling encumbered by the current system. Just my two cents on that. Keep up the good work guys! Edited June 17, 2014 by Casardis

Slurmageddon Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 (edited) Nef Anyo reminds me of that dude from Tron Which is cool! But it does seem like in the grand scheme of the Corpus cult he ranks a lot higher than a mere Sergeant. Especially if he has the kind of political power to have his Nephew turned into the Green Chrome Goblin! Also with Derf, I really feel more strongly about design #3 where the glowing triangle is moved up to his chest rather than directing the eye toward his technologically advanced cod-piece. Derf's platform shoes also seem to be somehow chanelling Disco Stu Which probably only stands out as much because the shin-guard portion of the boots are so slim and almost featureless, but yeah. It's still funny to imagine him with a 70's disco theme going on. Especially with aforementioned crotch-arrow! Maybe there's a running theme here... Edited June 18, 2014 by Santaphrax
OniDax Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Yeah. I don't like any of these. Tyl Regor: His whole bodybuilder look seems very out of place for the Grineer. He could go for an armored look like LT Lech Kril or the Grustrag Three, or he could be more slender like his current model. But making his armor look like a bodybuilder? As for his weapons, again, why is he so outlandish? I thought he's supposed to be a Melee 2.0 boss. I don't see any scenario where changing between two melee weapons (what's the point of doing this?) is a part of Melee 2.0. What is a part of Melee 2.0? Melee Combos and Melee Channeling, both of which only necessitate one weapon. Give this guy a sword or machete, make his look match what we currently know of the Grineer (you've made them favor armor, so it doesn't hurt to keep it that way instead of pursuing something that makes him look laughable, not tough), and just have him use one melee weapon instead of changing up between the out of place fists and the out of place axe and shield. As for Nef Anyo and Derf Anyo, these concepts I dislike even more so than Tyl Regor's. SERGEANT Nef Anyo: Are you guys doing away with his rank as Sergeant? It's a law enforcement/military rank and your concept looks like a slight variant of Alad V. Why? Why not have him look like a boss variant of the crewmen? Why not have him be different than Alad V and not rely on tech so much? Since we've seen no indication of any law enforcement, my first thought when it came to SGT Nef Anyo (like GENERAL Sargas Ruk, LIEUTENANT Lech Kril, CAPTAIN Vor) was that he was a military/security officer in charge of some group of Corpus invasion forces or something - the offensive arm of the Corpus. So why doesn't his concept reflect that? Right now his concept looks like Alad V in a Corpus version of Vay Hek's terra frame with his "throne" (why would a Sergeant have a throne?). Just seems to me like a better concept would be to have him be surrounded by the Corpus squad he leads (maybe they'd have more militaristic designs that personalize them to SGT Anyo). Maybe he'd also have some beefier looking Moas, which would also separate him from the mainstream Corpus and make his fight more unique. Maybe he could even have some sort of exo-skeleton. I'd imagine a Sergeant Nef Anyo would want to get more hands on with his enemies, and so wouldn't hide behind a throne (again, throne?). This exo-skeleton could even look like an exo-skeleton version of this current throne, with a similar type of attack. But being more hands on, he'd also use brute force and strong energy weapons. This would be in keeping with the Corpus who depend a lot on the use of proxies, as well as answering the community request for a Corpus with an exo-skeleton, while also tying in Nef Anyo's rank as Sergeant. It'd also be different from Vay Hek and Alad V. Derf Anyo: If you're going to take a community concept to put in the game, put the actual concept in the game and don't half-assedly introduce it in name only. If you're doing that, you might as well just give him a different name. That said, there's nothing about this Derf Anyo, save his name, that is like the concept. He isn't a Tenno enthusiast. He doesn't use swords. He isn't a clumsy joke of an enemy. He doesn't show up like the Stalker. He isn't even Sergeant Nef Anyo's son, but his nephew. What is the point of this enemy? To add something different once you've "figured out Nef Anyo's weakness"? Do Derf Anyo justice, and at least have him trying to look like a Tenno (dressing up in some armor that resembles Excalibur, since that's what his signature offensive ability was based on) and wielding a sword. The hoverboard has nothing to do with a Tenno enthusiast. This was the main reason I was disappointed with Devstream 30. I feel the concepts could have been much better than they were imo.

unknow99 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 (edited) Yay, another workshop! We definitely need more insight for your work...Really interested in a meeting with mr Regor (I hope we have some weapons clashing/collision like this : and actually see the damage locally dealt to his armor when we strike, but that may be a lot of additional work...) The Anyo's look fun (even if Derf, which brings a comical taste to the game, isn't really like the original concept & very parodic : https://forums.warframe.com/index.php?/topic/39073-mini-boss-idea-derf-anyo-son-of-nef-the-immortal-megathread/?hl=%20derf%20%20anyo https://forums.warframe.com/index.php?/topic/245346-nef-rework-what-are-you-thinking-new-desing-rant-and-calm-suggestions/ ) Of course, please let them be without invincible phases ( even if high level players will pretty much slaughter them, because of their location, on Mars. Hey, we could have the ability for bosses level to scale with the players once they finished the mission, like a hard mode or something. I think that Vor's fight contains bits of scaling difficulty but I'm not sure.) nor RNG walls & grind-locked like uncle Hek... Anyway, glad to see some diversity in the enemies arriving (maybe lore 1.0?!) & new playstyle methods coming involving more than just mindlessly shooting people. And you're adding other fan submissions to the roster that didn't win the contest : great! Curious to see what you're planning to give to Kela,Raptor,Ambulas & the upcoming Sentients.
